Maybe they don't like war movies? Or having hundreds of Aliens in the same movie? Or one-liners galore? Or the stock Jim Cameron "surrogate family" thing? I can see numerous potential reasons for such a ranking.

In many wayes I like Aliens, but every time I see it, it becomes more and more stupid:
It's a queen, an egg layer.......

Well - I guess...but.... Alien 3? Okee Dokee.

And to have Resurrection rated almost the same as Aliens is also highly suspect.

Alien 3 is great, very underrated IMO. Of course it's not as good as Aliens, but it certainly is a very good film... & believe it or not, a lot of people prefer it to Aliens.

The Assembly Cut though. I think the theatrical cut is pretty weak.

id worry more that they feel Prometheus is second best film, i think alien 4 is terrible but its better than pro by far....im not sure on what people are on, but the film was dull to many plot holes to pretend not to notice, the film is a prime example of visuals over substance...

its the phantom menace of the alien world.

ill stick to alien 1-3, i also pray that ridley does not make a blade runner prequel seriously he must be hanging out with george lucas, same level of idocy at the moment!

Ridley Scott gotta eat. Flops like Robin Hood and Kingdom of Heaven will do that to you.

EDIT

And I haven't seem Prometheus yet because of all the mixed word of mouth, but I think Alien Resurrection is one the worst films I've ever seen in a theater. If you're serious in ranking Resurrection over Prometheus, then I can't imagine that kind of awful, and am in no particular hurry to experience it.

I actually prefer Alien 3 over Aliens. I feel that the second film is over-rated and I can't stand "Newt". The piss-poor acting by the kid who played her ruins every scene she is in.

My order -
1. Alien
2. Alien 3
3. Aliens *tied with* Prometheus
4. Alien: Resurrection

Prometheus has its problems but its not terrible IMO. I saw it again Saturday and can honestly say I enjoyed it a little bit more the 2nd time around. I originally rated the movie a 3.5/5 and that score stays but I found it easier to overlook some of the things that bothered me from my first viewing once the shock and anticipation wore off.

If I had to score the franchise I'd go with

Alien - 10/10
Aliens - 9/10
Alien 3 - 6/10
Alien Resurrection - 4/10 (watchable garbage is still watchable)
Prometheus - a strong 7/10 (and that score could go up depending on what is shown in the additional 20mins for the Blu-Ray release)

the series ended at 3 for me!

i was really hoping for something decent with prometheus, i never expected it to live up to peoples expectations or for it to be as good as the 3! alien films, i was shocked at how mediocre it is, fancy wrapping for something rather dull! i can skip over certain things in films, but this film got to a point where i just could not ignore the rubbish writing and stupidity of all the characters! id go as far as to say its all down to the writers! but ridley obviously had input.

its shocking, and yes very dissapointing. you will hear a load of people say oh peoples expectations are to high blah blah just another excuse for those who seem blind to a poor film. if i have to sit in a film and attempt to overlook a ton of terrible writing to enjoy it...then theres definatly something wrong with it.

still id recommend you watch it. i went with a group of 12 people 2 thought it was just ok the rest of us felt like we had wasted 2 hours. it was a good discussion after the film.

unfortunatly i saw it twice, it was worse second time round.

I'm not giving you crap er anything because I own AvP Requiem as well but if Prometheus is "rubbish" and people are blind to what a "poor film" is what is AvP Requiem and Daybreakers to you? Personally I found them both to be stupid as hell but I found something silly and enjoyable with AvP Requiem...not so much Daybreakers. I thought Daybreakers was abysmal and I still can't figure out what Willem DaFoe was thinking attaching himself to that one.

I'll be the minority here. I got a chance to see Prometheus on Saturday in 3D and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Best 3D I've ever seen in a live action film. I'm a bonafide 3D hater and this film actually makes me want to upgrade to 3D.

As for the movie, it's not Alien so I tried not to approach it as a sequel or prequel just as another story that takes place in that time frame in that particular universe, kinda like Mark Verheiden's Aliens comics of the late 80's early 90's. My one gripe is the reveal of what the "Engineers" actually look like and there seems like there could be about another 10 or 15 min that could have been included (but I understand from reading IMDB and some other articles that the theatrical cut is the actual directors cut). Outside of that, I was impressed with everything about the film. Definitely looking to add this to the collection.

My personal rating for each film (out of 5 stars):

Alien 5/5
Aliens 5/5
Alien 3 3.25/5 (a good movie using an extremely flawed concept)
Alien 4 3/5
Prometheus 4/5

But none would justify it being ranked below Alien 3 IMO of course .

I have them ranked

Aliens
Alien
Prometheus

Alien 3
Alien R

Ridley mentioned something about the theatrical cut being "it" but it was annoucned not along ago that the Blu-Ray would include an extended cut of sorts that adds 20 minutes to the run time.

You're not in the minority. A lot of people loved Prometheus and also has a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.7 on IMDB. So obviously a lot of people liked the film. The problem is that most people like the story to be handed to them and don't like to think. Is it perfect ? Hell no. I have a feeling the extended cut will answer a lot and fill plot holes. Oh and to all the people that say that it doesn't tie into Alien, this was never intended to do that. There will be a sequel to this one.
