The tiresome internet fanboys can nitpick all they please, I liked this movie a lot.

Too bad the 70mm IMAX print looked like blurry over-processed crap though, guess despite being shot in 5K it was mastered at a lower resolution?

I liked Prometheus, because it kept me guessing as to what would happen next. I love it when movies are unpredictable. The movie also makes me speculate about how some questions will be explained.

However, I have to say that if the sequel to Prometheus doesn't answer anything, my love for this movie will fall drastically. I don't need everything directly explained to me, but I cannot tolerate loose ends in a story.

Since I'm not a die-hard Alien fan to begin with, here are my rating for all 5 films:

Alien 8/10
Aliens 7.5/10 (enjoyed the action, however some characters were annoying)
Alien 3 6/10
Alien Resurrection 5.5/10
Prometheus 9/10 (really loved this)

its the phantom menace of the alien world.

ill stick to alien 1-3, i also pray that ridley does not make a blade runner prequel seriously he must be hanging out with george lucas, same level of idocy at the moment!
Prometheus, to me, is the second best film in the Alien Universe.

Why does it seem like die-hard fans always get mad when a director wants to do a prequel/sequel. All they want is a little more money.

Oh yeah, I do have one other gripe about the film: Sci-Fi rule # 101 - NEVER TAKE OFF YOUR HELMET ON AN ALIEN WORLD NO HUMAN HAS NEVER BEEN TO
(I don't care what the sensors say)

Well, you've just totally negated the entire Star Trek universe.

Why is everyone who criticises this film an "internet fanboy"?

I hate that pathetic and patronising kind of comment. People think this is the greatest sci fi ever - fine. People think it's a flawed mess - fine. People got massively hyped up by the weeks and months of promotion and marketing and were left disappointed - fine.

Personally I thought it was extremely watchable, visually stunning but a huge let down. Despite the fact I'm posting this on the internet I'm no "fanboy" - I just like movies and found this, objectively, disappointing

Everyone? Not quite... but for the most part the criticisms are tiresome nitpicky fanboy nonsense after a while, hearing the internet rage over every prequel/reboot/sequel that comes out gets quite silly.

so you have to be a fanboy to have an opinion on sequels, reebots and such? flawed thinking.

i believe it takes a fanboy to enjoy this film and rate it a 9/10 film and say its the second greatest alien movie! there are tons of people all over saying its superior to alien and aliens! its not about being spoonfed, audience just love sparkly images now and characters that are written terribly so they dont have to think that hard!

there was not much mystery to work out! it was the terrible writing that was the mystery and probably the worst characters ive seen in a movie this year, I have not wanted an entire cast to die 10 mins into a movie in a while.

i saw it twice to give it a chance, and second timedidnt help, adding 20 mins into a blu cut of this film wont help, it didnt help Robin hood, this film is on par with that.

I agree the IMAX image quality was not good. Looking forward to seeing the blu ray to get some sharpness and detail. 5k is not nearly enough resolution for an imax screen (hell some blu-rays are mastered in 8K) so they upconvert, using their patented process and try and "fix" the nastys that get introduced into the picture. The sound quality was pretty stellar though.

And the film was pretty disappointing. I am all for a movie asking big questions, but not because of sloppy writing, editing, and terribly written characters whose actions are inexplicaple. This movie needed a thorough rewrite before going into production. It was pretty to look at. No directors cut will help this movie unless it's on the scale of the Kingdom of Heaven redo, and they simply did not write or film that much material.

I see it more like this: If Alien was The Bends, then Prometheus is Kid A...a good album, but one that never had a chance with the fans who want every album to sound like The Bends.

hahaha, nice.

But when I watched it all I heard was Chris Martin squealing about fair trade, feeding the orphans and making Gwyneth's macrobiotic dinner - all in an easily digestible, commercialised, slick, money spinning package - rather than hearing The Bends

What are the loose ends in the movie?

[Show spoiler]They answered the reason the engineers wanted to destroy humanity in carbon dating the skeleton at 2000 years. They wanted to destroy humans because of the rise of secular religion. This also means that Shaw's character arc comes full circle at the end of the movie because she failed to understand AGAIN that it was her god that was responsible for the engineers wanting to wipe out humans and she continued to arrogantly fly in the face of them.

Biggest cop out in the world; "I can't argue against your view so I'll dismiss you with a cheap insult"

I enjoyed Prometheus, but the fact is that a lot of it just doesn't make any sense. I will probably buy it anyway and most likely enjoy it more second time round as my expectations will be lower, but you can't escape the fact that some of the plot makes no sense:

The pictograms all over the world, etc, all "inviting" us to somewhere in space; the Engineers home world? No, a weapons depot where, 2000 years ago something went horribly wrong and wiped out all bar one Engineer who seems to have slept through it all. On top of that a similar incident took place on another nearby planet to another Engineer ship.

But no one from the Engineers home world thought 2000 years was a long time for there to be no contact from either LV223 or LV426 and thought to go and check it out?

And having "invited" mankind into space it turns out the Engineers just want to kill us all anyway (which should have happened 2000 years earlier, remember). WTF? Seriously, WHAT? So who planted the idea for the pictograms all over the world over thousands of years? The Engineers? They popped back to see how we were getting on, left clues about where they could be found, but ultimately, long before we achieve space travel they decide it's time to wipe us out?

It. Makes. No. Sense.

If someone can give me FACTS from the film that explains any of this I will genuinely be interested to read it. No supposition, not reading between the lines, not filling in gaps with your imagination; something from the film. If I missed the big reveal, then tell me what it was.

@Lutz; religion existed prior to 2000 years ago.

They explained that with the cave paintings. The engineers were the physical gods who interacted with humans. The cultures that predate secular religion who had multiple and physical gods have cave paintings with the star map. When humanity turns to secular religion there are no more have paintings and it dates to the same time the engineers decide to destroy humanity.

SECULAR was the key word in my original post.

Seen this is theaters, and was really excited due to the premise and the director. The opening scenes were fantastic. Other then that, I was really disappointed.
[Show spoiler]The film had far too many religious overtones. It was somewhat saved by the appearance of the alien from Alien at the end, which was very cool. However, that scene felt like it was kind of tacked on simply because the director felt the film needed something to make it cool.
