there was not much mystery to work out! it was the terrible writing that was the mystery and probably the worst characters ive seen in a movie this year, I have not wanted an entire cast to die 10 mins into a movie in a while.

i saw it twice to give it a chance, and second timedidnt help, adding 20 mins into a blu cut of this film wont help, it didnt help Robin hood, this film is on par with that.
Apparently I must be a fanboy then, I mean I couldn't possibly enjoy this MORE than the obviously SUPERIOR original right?

When you make comments like this, you really should think for a moment that not EVERYONE feels the first 2 films are untouchable works of art, I personally have already stated I wasn't a huge fan of the original films to begin with.

Ok, so the Engineers see themselves as Gods and enjoy being worshipped as such, then mankind goes and makes up it's own beliefs they decide to kill us off as a punishment?

On top of that a similar incident took place on another nearby planet to another Engineer ship.

But no one from the Engineers home world thought 2000 years was a long time for there to be no contact from either LV223 or LV426 and thought to go and check it out?

And having "invited" mankind into space it turns out the Engineers just want to kill us all anyway (which should have happened 2000 years earlier, remember). WTF? Seriously, WHAT? So who planted the idea for the pictograms all over the world over thousands of years? The Engineers? They popped back to see how we were getting on, left clues about where they could be found, but ultimately, long before we achieve space travel they decide it's time to wipe us out?

It. Makes. No. Sense.

.
None of those things were answered and left open on purpose. More then likely the sequel will answer them. The engineers on that planet may be another faction at war with other groups of their same species. So therefore they would have gone somewhere to hide their weapon stockpile and plan attacks or whatever. The single engineer left may have purposely killed all the other engineers there or could of been a single survivor like Ripley was in the original. Who knows. Many people seem upset it wasn't explained to them like in some cheesy engineer flashback sequence which IMO would have been way worse then leaving it open to debate.

The pictorials may be a result of the altered DNA caused by the black substance. The image of the planets as some kind of mass delusion or vision among all early people. Why the Engineers wanted this or even if they did I do not know. Either way I doubt they expected to be dead when mankind arrived.

Many scientists have speculated that the length of DNA and life's ability to survive make DNA a perfect place to store valuable information. It could be one faction of engineers was preserving this important info on different planets and another is trying to destroy it.

I don't have all the answers, but IMO just because its not spelled out doesn't make it a plot hole. On the contrary IMO it makes the story open to a lot of interpretation and debate. Hopefully Ridley will answer everything in the future.

If someone can give me FACTS from the film that explains any of this I will genuinely be interested to read it. No supposition, not reading between the lines, not filling in gaps with your imagination; something from the film. If I missed the big reveal, then tell me what it was.
lol, what is this, a presidential debate? I don't need to argue against your view, and can dismiss it freely, because it's a freakin' subjective evaluation of a movie and what anyone on the internet thinks of it besides myself is of no consequence to me. If you need the movie to give you those "facts", let's just say we watch movies for very different reasons

Saw this on the weekend, for the most part I enjoyed it, but unfortunately there was a few people in the theater that just don't get the concept that they should keep quiet and not do a running commentary, I feel like I need to watch it again. I will defiantly be picking this up when it's released.

I interpreted this very differently.

Here is the way I viewed it:

I don't think it was an actual invitation. I think that the "invitation" is the scientific excuse to explore. Some scientists found a similarity among cultures and which pointed to the stars. They then took it upon themselves to find out what stars they were looking at. The idea of cultures having similarities, without interaction, is nothing new. You can look at early biblical stories and find comparable stories in other cultures of a similar time period. Remember, the pictograms has many moons/planets. In Prometheus, they only visited 1 planet. They only went to the planet that they deemed could sustain life. Since it could sustain life, it would make sense that any biological weapons would be created/developed where life could be sustained.

I assume this is an alien reference? In Prometheus they only visited one of those pyramids. We only saw 1 part of the planet. There could have been many more places like that, with Engineers still alive/visiting. It is even possible that when he took off, he contacted others in his ship. They come looking for him and are attacked by the xenomorph. One gets a facehugger on him, but he escapes. As he is flying "home" chestbuster pops out, he crashes on nearby planet - the place where Alien takes place.

I think the problem was that originally it WAS supposed to be a direct prequel to Alien, and then after the first draft was written, they decided to make it its own entity and be loosely tied to the Alien franchise while also creating one of its own. That seems to be where mistakes were made. At first, I was thinking, "Did Ridley even WATCH Alien before making Prometheus???" because it really would've been very simple to connect the 2 films. The fact that
[Show spoiler]it took place on a different planet and the Engineer didn't die in the chair wearing its suit
makes me think that it was intentional and that a sequel will set the stage for Alien while also making its own world with Shaw & the Engineers. Honestly, I really liked Prometheus. But I think that if I had gone in not expecting a direct connection to Alien, I would've LOVED it, because it really is a good sci-fi movie (although with a few too many cliche sci-fi idiot characters)

I don't expect anything to be explained in a sequel as long as the same jerk who wrote LOST is involved.

That guy admitted that he had no direction for the show and had no intention of explaining any of the random stuff he added. Nope, he just flew by the seat of his pants the entire time.

It was never meant as a prequel and that's why RS kept saying so. This series of movies will eventually tie in with Alien. He directed Alien, so I guess he watched it.

Actually that's not quite correct. What RS and other cast members have been saying (in the multiple interviews I've seen) is that the original script was a direct prequel and when the second writed became involved (Linhoff?) they decided to flesh it out to three movies that will eventually tie in with Alien.

The script we've seen on screen from Prometheus is simply a re-drafting of the original prequel script that was fleshed out to acommodate 2 more films.

I like the film and will buy the blu-ray, just because it's a pretty sci-fi and I love sci-fi. There are laughable issues, nobody can deny that.

That's interesting since first it was two Aliens prequels but the company (fox?) said it would be too expensive so they rewrote the script and changed it to Prometheus and now they suddenly have two more movies planned? Doesn't sound cheaper but hey if that is true I'm happy

I clearly don't work from them so I'm no authority. I'm just regurgitating what he (and Theron) said in numerous interviews.

So yeah, as kind of crap as the writing was, the fumes from the film's atmosphere were enough to get me in a state of bliss.

not sure how much money this film made, i dont expect a sequel to get made though. he will probably concentrate on doing a horrendous job on blade runner prequel for next 3-4 years now, maybe he will connect it to the alien univers just to make it more stupid!
