Shame you had a bad screening, I've seen it 3 times at an Imax, Waterloo, London and can state it looked pin sharp and quite incredible at each screening. The same can't be said for the writing and lapses in logic, but ho hum that's just my opinion.

I only got it in a 4K 3D digital cinema but that was incredible also. Never seen such easy on the eye 3D before. Even Avatar flickered more. Though we bought our own Polaroid glasses to get even better feeling

I think this could be like Batman trilogy. The second one better than the first.
If it's true that they will make 2 more movies, and if they make it right, at the end we all be saying: "Ohhh that's why this happened in the first movie!"

I HOPE... lol

You admit not knowing how much this movie has made so far and still go as far as saying you don't expect a sequel. That's not very bright.

People complained about Cameron's predictable writing/dialogue in Avatar but not Aliens. It's really corny and dated compared to Alien. Special effects are still amazing though.
  1. Alien - 8.5
  2. Prometheus - 7.5
  3. Aliens - 6.5
  4. Alien 3 - 6
  5. Alien: Resurrection - 4

They're both extremely 80's to me, but I get your point. Still like them both pretty much equally, if not Aliens slightly more.

I'm not feeling so sure about Prometheus getting a sequel with it's current box office just yet. The movie cost $130 million to make and probably had quite a bit more spent on advertising. It's $222 million worldwide take may not be enough to get a sequel green lit. I think if the world wide box office can get to $300 million there would be a good chance for a sequel. However, I think it will be difficult for Prometheus to get there.

Really? Very well. A lot of Star Trek's alien "brothers" wanted to kill humans. And there was certainly no way to predict how aliens from unexplored planets (your original point) would react to human presence on their world. Only eternal optimism...which got countless redshirts killed. And correct me if I'm wrong but prior to the events of Prometheus, modern man never encountered these hostile lifeforms, and has no way to know that they are hostile. You're suggesting that the characters should be wary based on knowledge they don't have.

Your argument assumes that the characters should be self-conscious of their fictional natures, and realize the genres of their respective films...which is just silly. In short, what's good for the Kirk is good for the Charlie. People don't balk about this behavior in Trek because Trek is "classic," but they'll nitpick the same shit in Prometheus because it's new. Double-standards are not valid arguments. If it's stupid for Charlie to take his helmet off based on the scanner's readings of a breathable atmosphere, it's just as stupid for Kirk to beam down to a planet without a helmet based on a sensor reading of "Class M."

It's like Hudson and Newt and the "Affirmative" then a couple of years later he makes fun of it in T2 with John explaining to the T-800 why normal people don't say "Affirmative" and crap and say "Ya, no problemo"...

The Assembly Cut though. I think the theatrical cut is pretty weak.

I have always loved Alien3. It is David Fincher's first movie and while the theatrical cut was quite weak, the "Assembly Cut" really fills in the blanks of the edited version and makes a lot more sense over-all, plus there is a lot more character development. I love it!

I hear during the writing and production there were a lot of issues and Fincher walked off the set many times and production did stop for months and months due to Fincher and FOX not seeing eye to eye. Considering, I think it turned out great and I like it much better than Resurrection.

Alien is one of my most favorite films of all time, and while Aliens is very good, I do get tired of the Cameron style. I love each Alien film for what it is, they are all different and Prometheus fits in perfectly as a solid prequal to Alien and I do see a Prometheus sequal, Alien prequal being announced shortly. Prometheus was great and I would love a continuation of it, which I think is a given by the end of the film.

I'd say the total budget (production + ads + prints) is close to $200 million. $222 mil isn't going to greenlight a sequel yet. They probably need $400 million worldwide, which they could get to.

The studio doesn't collect every dollar a film makes at the box office. You obviously have to split a portion with the theater, overseas distribution costs, and Ridley Scott and co. may get a portion on the back end depending on their deals. Of course, home video, PPV, then premium channel sales will help.
