They were both under the initial effects of inhaling the "goo vapor" so their judgement was impaired substantially.

Because the mission wasn't really a science mission at all, it was staffed with bottom of the barrel scientists. Just enough to look good on paper, and satisfy the objections of the Weyland board. But really it was just a ferry ride, the only crewmembers who mattered were the robot and maybe - maybe - the new age scientists who found the original message. The scientists act incompetent because they are incompetent. Even the pilot of the ship is too lazy to attend crew meetings - he's more concerned with decorating his Christmas tree. The movie telegraphs this over and over again, and explains it in a conversation.

Watched all the deleted scenes last night and started the documentary. Gotta say I'm glad most of the scenes were cut or edited. I do however really like the fight sequence with Shaw & the engineer in the escape pod & I felt it was believable the way the fight sequence was choreographed that she could have taken him on with an ax. I'm still very happy with Ridley's cut overall but that should have been left in IMO.

I'm guessing that chart is referring to the black goo?

I remember somebody saying that the Jon Spaihts draft is on the second screen app. Is this true?

I'm not sure I buy that these were actually supposed to be stupid scientists, the worst of the worst, but that's pretty funny. That would be hilarious if that were true. Weyland hires worst scientists he can find after spending trillions. Dies. Worst. Plan. Ever.

Probably the quantity ingested more than anything. Holloway literally took in an amount half or even a quarter the size of a dime, diluted in alcohol, while the Engineer at the beginning drinks a cup of the stuff.

Man, that almost 4 hour documentary keeps going and going. When you think it's over, it still keeps on going.

I like how Ridley Scott had control over the editing too. It truly shows his passion and dedication for this project.

Is wasnt the quality of the scientists that got Weyland killed though...it was Davids head!(Weyland got beat to death with his own creation lol!)

It seems like Vickers who interviewed or had a hand in hiring most of the crew didn't believe they would find anything out there anyways. Besides that I'm not sure what kind of training you could provide that would prepare someone for encountering what they encountered there. Besides you NEVER know how someone is going to react, no matter their training, when presented with something completely alien to them.

People complain about Vickers not zigzagging. Until I'm on an alien world running from a crashing ship and actually zigzag to get away then I doubt I'm someone who can say she was stupid/the writing was bad.

Also with the hammerpede: there is a deleted scene showing them finding a relatively docile smaller worm... Would I have reached out to touch it. No, but not everyone reacts under stress the same way....

Weylands ego sets this mission up for disaster from the get-go. He just wanted to live long enough to meet the engineers and hopefully achieve immortality. The hell with the consequences and everyone else. He's a cold bitter man who cared for no one but himself which speaks volumes about the Weyand Yutani corporation and the actions they take in the Alien films.

Maybe he couldn't stand being around the crew any longer

Cooler, maybe, definitely creepy in an Alien-esque sexual subconscious sort of way. But it definitely isn't as cringe worthy as the
[Show spoiler]cesarian.
Even watching the making-of that particular scene made me cringe a little.

There is a deleted scene that may (or may not) explain this behavior. In the DS, the crew finds a smaller version of the alien rattler. They all look it over and talk a bit. It seems harmless. The biologist cups this specimen and the crew continued on their quest inside the pyramid.

Later and in the final cut of the film, when he encounters a full sized version of one these beings, he reacts with a sort of familiarity (this theory is up for debate). Since the other one was harmless, surely this one is too? Watch that DS and let me know what you think.

If it were me and that thing reered its head, the instinct to run and survive would have definitely taken over.

"Also with the hammerpede: there is a deleted scene showing them finding a relatively docile smaller worm... Would I have reached out to touch it. No, but not everyone reacts under stress the same way.... "

Didn't they show the worms in theatrical version? Or is it they actually show them looking at them in a deleted scene?

The worms are slightly bigger than maggot size in the film. In the DS, they show them grown to about the size of a human hand.

Now that I think about it...it's pretty safe to say that events depicted in the entire the Alien franchise would never have occurred if humans truly behaved rationally under various circumstances.

That being said, the characters of Prometheus are OK in my book.
