Elizabeth took David with him, but she still had no idea how evil David really is. I guess David was her meal ticket to get off the planet since he knew how to control the alien spaceship.

[Show spoiler]He wanted to know what would happen. If you notice, David also asked Holloway how far he will go for science or THE answer. Holloway said something along the lines of "whatever it takes." That was the green light for David to continue with tainting his drink and seeing what would happen.

I felt like they were searching for a planet to go to and create humans, that is why they cycled through many planets before they chose Earth in that hologram.

Earth is not the only planet they've created life in. The prologue shows how they go about doing it.

I know, and I thought the hologram sequence that David watched was when the Engineers chose Earth to create a new race there... which became us.

Then we saw how the only person on the entire ship who was confided in was David. And only reluctantly, Vickers. We were shown that David could master any challenge - alien writing, sure why not. Science experiments - sure why not. He was the only member of the crew that was not an idiot, and was shown to be the only one that the creator of the mission considered worth his time.

Yeah, a lot of good that did him. He had no feelings. Had no soul. No sense of morality. And in the end he lost his head, literally.

I agree the film is terribly flawed, and when watching it again (I'll force myself to), I will pay special attention to everything that was said about the troubles with the board of directors, to see if I am over-reading an explanation of why this mission was crewed by idiots. But it was. Not just dimmer-than-some, but truly dim, socially inept, professionally suspect. That wasn't bad writing, that was clearly a crew selected from the bottom of the barrel.

Frankly I found it refreshing, not flawed. Scientists are too often stereotyped as geniuses, when the truth is increasingly the opposite as more fraud and retractions of scientific research come to light.

A better plan would have been to take a whole bunch of animals on board in cryosleep, and do some testing on them instead of venturing off across the galaxy and then testing and killing crew members, but, you know, the writing isn't the best in this film. Weyland's plan to extend his life apparently involves hiring the dumbest people possible, building a trillion dollar ship, and charting a course across the galaxy based on some cave paintings and a woman who says she has no proof, but believes it, hoping there will be a magic fountain of life on there.

I always felt David disliked Charlie especially after that smart ass comment Charlie made to David about why he needs to wear a Space suit when is isn't human.

But I agree, the writing isn't all that great. It seemed rushed a bit. Hopefully the sequel will be better written.

Whatever..maybe the opening scene is AFTER the engineers wiped out a planet, then the black goo is how they create their race on a fresh planet. Remember david said sometimes you have to destroy in order to create. That's how they do it.
And remember the head they took for inspection? It was bleeding black goo. Engineers blood is the black goo.

I still think its when they are going to wipe out the humans because I think it may be in the deleted scenes where they say the holograms are a recording. If this is a recording you could argue that it is a recording of the events on that actual ship which is not the same ship that drops off the engineer in the beginning.

The worms were already in the dirt in the black goo canister chamber. It shows david stepping down and they are there.. maybe in alien the facehugger was just some other dumb creature that stumbled upon that ship. I know there is enigineers on lv426!

Fully agree the film should have been made to stand on its own, not feel awesome only if you go through the 9 hours of stuff left out of the movie. I wish they packed a significant more amount content into the actual movie.
