Not directly but the answer is an airborne biological toxin, i.e. the black ooze. Someone dropped a vial and they knew what would happen. It's kind of touched on in a deleted scene when Janek talks to Vickers about his military career and witnessing a biological agent outbreak.

Watched this tonight for the first time. Having never watched Aliens, I was able to take this movie at face value. Still enjoy reading all the theories though.

If you guys want to cry about numbers, cover the fact that Vickers thinks they're in orbit around Jupiter.

How was David able to pick up the hologram of earth in the orrery?
Is it a hard-light hologram or something?

It's not our technology... the technology belongs to the Engineers so basically, it's developed by an intellect far superior to our own. We aren't supposed to really 'know' that.

I feel like I'm talking to a wall. Scott himself said they thought about doing a Jesus as Engineer thing, but ruled it out as they thought it was too in your face. Jesus is not part of the Engineers and is not the reason for wanting to destroy us.

I didn't say he was! I'm only discussing the hypothetical date debate going on. I don't care if that's actually in the film or not.

Just rewatched the film. Despite being angry at it when I saw it in the theatre, surprisingly, I found myself enjoying the film a great deal. It's still flawed, and I refuse to believe the 2000 years thing is anything other than a coincidence to set this sometime in line with Alien and the that Engineers crashed on LV 426 - and I hate the Space Jesus thing, so I'll just pretend it doesn't exist - but damn, I actually enjoyed it. I mostly viewed it as a horror film and didn't think about the science too much.

How about a full on review from a newbie perspective before it's polluted my others views? That would be neat.

At least it Prometheus in shrinkwrap! That way you don't have to damage your slipcover with Goo Gone or alcohol. (Do aliens drink alcohol? Remember what happened to E.T.)

Come on, this movie is pretty good, but it is not in the same league as The Matrix, Star Wars, Star Trek, or Blade Runner.

And in case you haven't noticed, people are still confused as hell about it, albeit less since hearing the commentaries. But a movie should not require a commentary to make sense of elements in the plot. Still, with so many questions answered, people in this thread are still mostly trying to sort this crap out.

Yeah, it's relationship to a different (and much better) movie called 'Alien'.

Charles de Lauzirika debunks the Bladerunner connection below.
Original article here.

Quote:
Movies.com spoke with Prometheus Blu-ray producer and documentarian Charles de Lauzirika, who created the supposed communique written by Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce), which made some pretty obvious allusions to Blade Runner's Eldon Tyrell.

Now, is the excerpt actually canon in the Alien/Prometheus universe? Not really, says de Lauzirika:

Quote:
"That was me having fun and being cutesy. I wrote all that stuff. I actually said this at the press conference they had in London, which is that if it's in the film, it's canon. I would argue that the viral pieces that are included in the Peter Weyland Files are canon just because they originated with Ridley and Damon Lindelof. I would say those, to some degree, are canon. But anything else - especially these which are kind of like little cute, embedded text graphics on the menus - I wouldn't take those too seriously. It's just meant to be an in-universe framework for those viral pieces."
He apparently got the idea from fans online trying to connect the dots between the two acclaimed sci-fi universes, and thought he would have a little fun to see if anyone would catch on. Of course, everyone did:

Quote:
"As a Blade Runner fan, and because there's been so much talk before this even occurred with people on the Internet speculating that maybe Alien and Blade Runner and Prometheus could all exist in the same universe, it was just more of a wink at that. Absolutely nothing to be taken seriously. I mean, I sent it to Ridley and he had no comment. [Laughs] So, it's just icing on top of icing. It's not the cake. It's a fun, little side thing that's very superficial. And, by the way, it in no way officially establishes that it's Blade Runner because, if a lawyer were to comb through that, there's no reference to Tyrell or anything in Blade Runner. It's just a very lightly intentioned joke."

Damn I am number 207357. I dont know if I see it being a collectors item though since it is something you have to print out so essentially it could either look amazing or like complete poop depending on your printer and paper. I didnt have to get an email to get it. So for anyone else who is wanting to print this up just register on the project prometheus site and log in. After that I just googled Weylan Investors and the first link brought me directly to the certificate that already had my name and crap on it.

Hmmm. 207357. Not so limited edition. Maybe they lied and its open ended. So, all you have to do is go here, sign up and print the certificate: http://www.projectprometheus.com/cert/

Yes. I preordered months ago. It still hasn't listed as 'shipping soon'. I am using super saver shipping, but still quite a change from last year when I usually received BDs from them on release date or within a couple of days even with super saver. Since this order and Avatar 3D are on a gift card I'll wait, but it is unlikely that they will get future orders from me when I can buy from BB or Walmart for the same price or less.
I did get $10 in movie money to see Prometheus, so there was some advantage.
