Avatar is technically the better movie than Prometheus since it's more coherently made rather than feeling like it's been stitched together. Though it's also an unfair comparison since Avatar uses a cookie cutter story riddled with Hollywood cliches while Prometheus at least attempts to try something new.

Prometheus isn't style over substance? Please...
Guess Avatar needed more piddling philosophical posturing to earn its internet cred, but for me it's ten times the film Prometheus is. |

I don't think that the cave paintings are an invitation, I think the early humans were trying to leave a record of a visitation from the engineers. Just like books and other record keeping that we do today. I think that humans are so curious and desperate to know more, to know why, so with some rationalization and justification, we humans can get what meaning we want-because nobody is there to contradict or stop us. So shaw, holloway, weyland, all wanted to believe it was in invitation so it was...get it? this movie ![]() |

What is interesting about him that nobody seems to point out is that of the 4 cryo sleep pods, his was the only one that did not have a hole in the middle of it! The three other ones there DID! So we all know what that means. ![]() ![]() .

Watched this on blu-ray just now and here's my take after (alternate scenes, etc)...
Ridley Scott could've easily made this into an Alien movie and it was supposed to be just that originally. The deleted scenes are evidence of that. From [Show spoiler] . He left stuff out and changed a lot as well. I'm glad he didn't go the direction of another Alien movie. The ambiguity leaves so much to the imagination."Sometimes in order to create, you have to destroy." - David What I think David is saying here is that in order for the Engineers to create the Xenomorph, they have to destroy the human race. I think David picked up on this when he found that Shaw was impregnated after intercourse with the infected Holloway. The engineers held the Xenomorph in high esteem because they had mural of one in the "tomb" chamber. Then in the extended scene [Show spoiler] I feel like that is because the Engineers realized even they couldn't control the Xenomorph.

Since the Engineers were drawn in all the cave paintings, it means that they've been back to Earth to check on it since the one in the begining sacrificed himself to create life on the planet. Why all the interest in this one planet when they have at least two moons there to grow life on?
The goo seems to be used by them as an evolutionary tool, rather than a weapon. If they've been around for so long, and can harness life, why would they need to use it as a weapon? They're kind of afraid of it. Working with it on a barren world, instead of populated one, and not afraid to leave others behind because of it. If they wanted to wipe out a world, they'd just use something like ebola, that strikes quick, could kill a planet in months if spread, and then just dies off itself. If they used the goo as a weapon on Earth, they'd come back years later to find monsters they couldn't handle. Better to just nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure. ![]() And really, why do they always bring just one android? They're always much more useful than the humans! |

BTW. Having a known android aboard their ship slightly disappoints me. When Ash is revealed in ALIEN ("Ash is a GD ROBOT!!!") I loved that maybe they were unaware that lifelike bots existed at that point and time, and THAT was the real shock in it. It was not just that the company had put a spy/plant aboard, but also they had never known a lifelike bot existed yet. .

Great choices with the screencaps Goofnut. I'd love to see one of Kirk Douglas on a jetski from the special features. Can't remember exactly where it was, but they were talking about what Weyland's dream was supposed to look like while he was in cryosleep, and the artwork they showed used a painting of a young Kirk Douglas instead of Guy Pearce. Guess he wasn't cast yet.
