Yeah...but they didn't have flamethrowers or even cattle prods. Even if he was going in there to trap it, I personally, wouldve preferred SOMEONE be there with me to watch my back or at least give me some sense of comfort that I'm not alone OR at least be there to try and help me should I be attacked.

I'm trying to remember though, did Ripley spend a considerable amount of time grabbing the cat? After she hits the self-destruct, isn't Jones on her way to the shuttle anyway?
If I remember correctly, she sets the ship to self destruct and then heads towards the shuttle but encounters the alien in a corridor, she gets frightened and drops the case holding the cat and has to backtrack to avoid the alien. At this point I believe she tries to turn off the self destruct system but its too late. She goes back to where she dropped the cat and sure enough the alien isn't there anymore, so she grabs the cat and onward to the shuttle she goes.

My "that is stupid" opinion towards this situation is, if I have 15 mins to get off a ship rigged to explode, I'm not gonna bother lugging a damn cat around in a big bulky case in one hand with a flamethrower in the other. Especially if theres the possibility of running into an alien on the way. Why she didnt just incinerate the son of a b**ch right then and there, i don't know...perhaps she thought fire wouldnt work?

It appears that PowerDVD has released a patch, now my 3D disc works.

Thanks for nothing, guys.

PS. Can anyone point out to me the so-called stupid decisions made by characters in Prometheus? Can't say I spotted any.

Like a couple of chuckleheads like Parker and Lambert? Dallas' options are pretty limited.

I always loved this sequence because it's telling a compelling story without any dialogue (well except for Mother, I guess). I always assumed Ripley wasn't too keen on taking the alien head-on, even with a flamethrower in hand. So she figured if she stopped the self-destruct, it would buy her a bit more time to somehow figure out a way to get to the shuttle and avoid the alien altogether. Maybe if the alien was still in the way of getting to the shuttle after Ripley unsuccessfully tried to stop the self-destruct, she would've blasted it with the flamethrower as a last resort.

I get what you're saying, though. People have talked about Alien's dumb moments for years, it just never benefitted from being released when there was an internet for people to immediately tear it apart.

Things like the biologist (Milburn) approaching an alien organism he knows nothing about as if it were a sweet little kitten he found. It IS a bit silly...but I'm over it.

This one doesn't bother me as much but alot of people complained about how stupid it was that Vickers and Shaw ran in a straight line when the alien ship was rolling towards them instead of running diagonal or to the side to avoid its path.

Some people thought it was stupid that David kept doing all these questionable things and nobody thought it necessary to say "hey David...just don't touch anything okie dokie?"

I dont particular care whether this stuff is considered stupid or not and I certainly have my own opinions on it...but I love the movie all the same

Or how about Dallas going into the airduct ALONE to try and find/kill the alien when there are 4 perfectly able people that could have assisted him instead of hovering around a tracking device. Yea, great idea going down a dark corridor by yourself.

And dont get me started on Ripley, a 15 minute self destruction sequence, and her thinking its a good idea to waste time going back for that damn cat. Why is the cat there to begin with?
LOL, join the club!! What makes it funnier is the people "Rationalizing" these characters' reasons, when we all know they were just as naive as Milburn.

Or in Aliens when Burke locked everyone out when the crew was under seige by the swarm of Xenomorphs. Other than Bishop operating the Drop Ship, did he really expect to survive that ordeal with no weapons on him?

Or how in d hail did the Queen (lol The Alien Hybrid as well) manage to get on to the ships at the end?

We can nitpick all til the cows come home. It's funny how we have the world wide web at our fingertips, but we seem to have no clue about finding information, making up our own minds, or "waiting" for an answer to appear.

SO glad certain movies were made before a time when we were not "Plugged in".

they changed the mythology so much it makes sense he would ignore things like Queen, etc
Well, some people may have tried to rebutt them but that doesnt make them go away. When one or two people mention something about a film its probably just their "out there" opinion. When a plethora of people mention the same darned things then its safe to say that there IS an actual issue. Offering a rebuttal doesnt clear up logic issues or any other issues with a film. This goes for all films. Hell - many of my favorites have this stuff going on too. The difference is that I just read the comments, accept the fact that they exist and go on enjoying the film anyways.

It seesm sometimes though, if you even dare mention a problem with a film...its like you insulted someones mother or whatever.

Its true that the internet has allowed more nitpicking to occur. However, maybe Alien has LESS nitpicky targets than Pormetheus does and thats why Prometheus gets more heat? That is possible.

I think what it really comes down to is the passage of time and what ObiWanShinobi says here:

I'm sure there was a time where I shouted "why is she going back for that goddamn cat?!" but I don't question it anymore because who cares? It's what Ripley does. I'm over it. I've seen the other Alien movies so many times that, while I do acknowledge there are some dumb moments in them, I've sorta stopped caring about them and I just enjoy the ride. There are some admittedly dumb things in Prometheus that bug me, but I imagine with subsequent viewings I'll just shrug that stuff off and think "yeah it's dumb, but that's just what happens."

And I think we can all agree. Prometheus needed more cats.

Yes we all find out that the Xenomorphs we all know and love derived from a cat left on one of the derelict ships.

This is the reason why when Jonesy sees the Alien for the first time and hisses, the Xenomorph comes down and says, nooo I'm one of you. The cat says, "ohhh ok I heard about you guys before", and takes a step back to watch Brett get Yacked.

Re: Black Goo

I was having a hard time taking it seriously when I saw it because all I could think about was the Venom symbiote.
But it was planned to be sequelized the whole time, so it was created with at least one in mind (I think there will be two though).

I was wondering, how would you guys have felt about the movie had the trailers shown more or less nothing? Imagine not knowing the Juggernaut was in the movie and seeing it take off in the end, it would have been pretty epic.
If the trailers had spoilt Alien back in the day like Prometheus, I wonder how it would have fared.Imagine knowing about the eggs, the chestburster and the xenomorph before going in.

Well what is wrong with that? If it's good, which the film is, and interesting, which it DEFINITELY is, then what's the problem? With the dearth of quality sci-fi out there today, I am all for Ridley Scott making another one, if not two more.

I fail to see the issue, I mean, should the Lord of the Rings films stopped after one? Star Wars? Star Trek? Indiana Jones?

Yeah. Whats even worse as that the closer the movie got to release the MORE they kept showing of it

I remember seeing previews spoiling the big alien attacking the engineer (when shaw opens the door) and the Fifield helmet melting scene, the alien c-section bit was shown too much, and yes...they showed WAY too much of the Juggernaut...hell they even showing the Prometheus crashing into it WHAT were they thinking spoiling all of that?

Visually both are fine, nothing to discuss there. The script of Avatar felt more polished & ready whereas Prometheus seemd to have a lot of interesting ideas and concepts but wasnt able to get them on screen properly. Or something like that.

Avatar also had better character development - even though the characters were predictable and we've seen them before, they still had character "arcs". Like Jake Sully and his love story. Parker Selfridge getting softer at the end. Even Neytiri being hostile towards Jake at first but then falling for him. Its simple stuff but its still somewhat believable and genuine. Prometheus doesnt have much actual development. We dont meet or get to know anyone early in the film - The film basically starts with the expedition where Shaw and Halloway find the cave paintings. Then, its off to space we go. If anything, David is the most interesting character in Prometheus and he isnt even a person. The rest of the characters are either total throw aways - meaning you know they are gonna die during the film in some way or they simply arent developed much. There are no character arcs/backstories in Prometheus that I could discern. I hardly cared what happened to any of the humans. In Alien, for example, most people were rooting for the crew or at least Ripley towards the end.
We'll just agree to disagree. While I like and own Avatar, it can't hold Prometheus' jock....in anything.
