I never watch movies over and over again like I have with this one. Even if it's something that I've been dying to see, I usually watch it once and then I may watch it again several weeks later, but I always mix it up and watch other movies in between. I really think that, for my tastes, this is the best dark sci-fi movie to come out in ages.

I've noticed that some people are saying that this movie leaves too much unexplained or unanswered, but I keep getting more and more out of it every time I watch it, and to me, that's a really great thing. I hate how almost all big movies nowadays have to spell everything out for everyone with over the top exposition, and I think the mystery and questions in this movie are a big part of what makes it so great. I would hate to be spoon-fed all of the answers, and considering that there is going to be at least one sequel, that would kind of ruin my excitement for the next one.

All that being said, I've really learned a lot of fascinating stuff from lurking in this thread, with a special thanks to Raygendreau.
Thanks for your kind words, Frogmort. I feel the same way you do about the movie.

Calling all Prometheus fans:

Make sure to cast your votes for Prometheus here:

http://www.peopleschoice.com/pca/nominations/

You can vote as many times as you want, the Top 5 results in each category will become the official nominees for the People's Choice Awards 2013.

Don't waste your time. The Avengers will dominate that. You may vote Prometheus twenty times, but some 13-year-old on his cell phone just voted for The Avengers about four-hundred-and-twenty-nine times while sitting on the couch watching MTV (and got three of his friends to do the same).

People's choice = most popular = doesn't matter anyways. It's like trying to make the top 250 over at IMDB.

You're right! They wouldn't break the sequence....or would they? If Lindelof comes back, all bets are off.

Another unrelated subject. I just rewatched the post production segment of The Furious Gods. It covers the final editing with Pietro Scalia and Ridley Scott. A year or two ago Richard Harris had metioned that final editing for BDs was done using a 40" monitor. Prometheus was edited on a 60" 3D Panasonic. Perhaps this is the new norm?

The only issue I had with Prometheus was the editing. It seemed too abrupt in some of the transitions from scene to scene. From an artistic standpoint, the problem was getting the film to come in at two hours in order to maximize boxoffice. Both Ridley and Fox wanted this. I think they would have been better off with a 2 hr 15 minute final cut.

I agree. There are two deleted scenes that I wish would have stayed in the film:

[Show spoiler]1) The Engineer speaking and Weyland's speech.

2) The longer bit with the Engineer searching for Shaw.

I actually enjoyed the flow of the deleted Fifiled vehicle deck action scene a lot more then the original version.

I wonder how much more longer it was compared to the one in the final film?

Even throwing the logic issues aside, the film is lacking something. Other than the robot David, there aren't any interesting characters at all. They could have done more with Vickers but instead wasted her. I tried to get into Shaws character but it just doesn't work. No one gets all that developed. Only David has any kind of arc, if you can even call it that. Halloway is an obnoxious boob and easy to hate. Most of the rest of the crew were throw-aways as well.

Lots of unanswered questions too which I hope are cleared up in the next film. Here's what I need to know:

[Show spoiler]I still don't get how Shaw and Halloway assume that these engineers created us just because of some wall murals. It's quite an ambitious guess. But, that's cool. Even matching DNA doesn't mean they made us. It could mean we descend from them, but it doesn't imply creation at all.

And, there isn't anything particularly deep going on here. It's very straightforward. The engineers are using this planet to create some biological weapons and the experiment goes wrong and the weapons turn on them. There was a little corporate influence here at some level but ultimately it's a science/genetics project that doesn't work out to well.

1) Was the alien designed specifically the way it was for a reason? Why make them require a host to be born? Why do they have acid for blood? What enemy were they going to use the alien against?

2) Who or what created the engineers? What prompted them to decide to even make the bio weapons? Who are they fighting against?

3) Are the xenomorphs the final stage of this bio weapon? It appears at the end of the film that we see a large, prototype of the face hugger in action. Or, are the xenomorphs just one of many possible incarnations of this alien/bio weapon?

4) Were we created by the engineers because we happen to be very good hosts for these aliens?

Overall, I'm at least interested enough to see the next film. The second viewing didn't reveal a bunch more since there isn't really more to reveal. I did enjoy it enough though, flaws and issues in all, enough to stick it out.
Just watched it a second time as well and it is no doubt a visual delight, but still have the same feelings as you about the characters, all forgettable really. Feels like none of them had a sincere bone in them and that made me not really want to be interested in them either.

Below is my guess on some of your questions.

[Show spoiler]1) Was the alien designed specifically the way it was for a reason? Why make them require a host to be born? Why do they have acid for blood? What enemy were they going to use the alien against?

Seems like they were designed to destroy humans on planet earth would be my guess. Using people as hosts is a first step to getting rid of the host before they cause more devastation. Using acid for blood makes them all the more lethal.

2) Who or what created the engineers? What prompted them to decide to even make the bio weapons? Who are they fighting against?

Where not talking about their souls here, just their physical presence so maybe smarter aliens created them as an experiment just as they may have created us as an experiment and when they observed how we are trashing our planet, maybe they decided that it's time to clean house.

4) Were we created by the engineers because we happen to be very good hosts for these aliens?

Still think that in this story, they created us to see how we evolve on earth. When they woke up the big guy and he started ripping people's heads off and more, it's obvious they don't view us very kindly lol. Remember, it's just a movie and it's not really trying to make any deep religious, political or spiritual statements, it was more in the line of entertainment with the idea probably of number 2,3 and 4 to follow.

The source of the second android possibility originated with Ridley Scott during a video feed from Iceland Detifoss Waterfall to Comicom 2011 with Q&A from Lindelof. (Scott was wrapping of Iceland filming) When asked if there would be an android in Prometheus, his response was, "There may be two". In retrospect, he was just being devious.

Didn't check the difference in length, but the CG Fifield more clearly shows the morphing toward the xenomorph that we know and love.

The Fifield CG face looked good, but the rest of him in that alternate scene did not. The movements were all wrong (like they often are with CGI characters). Even with some visual polish I don't think it would have stood up to all of the other outstanding FX in the film.

Something tells me shes an android that isn't aware shes an android. Perhaps she was programmed to be more of a free-thinker, a little more human like and because of it she became quite the business woman and skeptic of Weylands work...which in turn upset Weyland, so he created David. Who, at first glance, seems very loyal towards his "master", his work and needs
Um. No. If she was an android, why did she need to be in cryo-sleep.

+1. Yes it was intentional to have Vickers portrayed as suspicious and with an agenda. She was a "suit" and she was a human who played a good part of being as controlled as an android. And yes, the relationship between Vickers and Weyland really demonstrated that people could easily discard one another and form a connection/relationship/favoured with an android. I think Vickers despised that David was more favoured by Weyland than her, and treated like a son.

[Show spoiler]J,

Thanks for going a second time, but it is clear those cute zoo animals have soundly defeated us. Maybe the next time I try to convince Noomi Rapace to wear a rainbow-colored afro wig, she'll listen to me.

Vickers. Yes, she does look like David. Yes, this was intentional. What better way to piss off your daughter than to build the male equivalent of her? But enough about daddy issues (seriously, Lindelof, we get it!), allow me to answer your question. Is she a robot?

She is not.

But did Vickers somehow survive being smushed by the gigantic rolling horseshoe that was the derelict ship? Could her scantily-clad push-up training have saved her in that final moment of crushitude? And more importantly, WHY DIDN'T SHE JUST RUN ZIG-ZAGGY OR SIDEWAYS TO AVOID IT?!?

I don't have the answers to these questions, Josh. I'm just the writer.

Your Pal,

D

So, you have the answer from the writer and the director. And, as Lindelof said "I'm just the writer" Ridley Scott directed the writers as well as the actors and every other element of the production.

That said, I would like to see Theron
