The movie is just pure fun, gory insanity and it does have a good bit of subtext whether you claim it does or not.
Agreed. The FX in Starship Troopers are pretty phenomenal!

He can have his say when he makes another great film; it's been many years since he's had even a good one. Until then, no dice for Ridley.

I never got the love for the CGI in Starship Troopers. It's a good movie but the bugs simply don't look that great.

Not to mention that the Academy somehow nominated it for Visual Effects over Men in Black.

IMHO they hold up better than MIB's visual effects. The effects in Starship Troopers (1997) look better than the CGI in most of today's films.

I disagree. But even if I agreed, it would still be clear that he's never made a film as shitty as either of the AVP movies...not by a long shot. So yeah, I'm backing Scott on this one.

So do the practical FX in Prometheus.

No love for AVP, huh? It may not be "Cannon", but I think AVP was a damn good monster movie. Requiem sucked, but that doesn't blemish AVP. IMHO, of course!

I watch Alien vs. Predator for the fight scenes only. If you try to watch the entire movie you'll be wincing constantly from all of the hokey dialogue and yeah right moments.

Sorry to disagree, but I like AVP. Nothing in it makes me wince. It's a monster movie, plain and simple. It's fun, not some big serious deal. It's probably for similar reasons that I prefer Aliens to Alien. For me, they both have more "replayability" than Alien (other than Ripley's "fight scenes"). But I prefer all three of those to Prometheus, which I found to be fairly self-inflated and pompous (pending a second viewing) - even if that makes me "low brow".

I guess if you want big mindless action spectacle, AVP is it.

For me, Alien is all about psycho-sexual horror and Lovecraftian overtones. Something none of the other films in the franchise (prior to Prometheus) ever bothered much with (though Alien 3 at least tried to make it about rape again). Predator has always been about the mindless action, though. I enjoy it (and Aliens), but it is what it is. AVP is just bad, though.

... Seriously, I'm not saying AVP is better than Alien - it's just that once you've seen Alien a couple of times ... you're gonna have to wait a few years unless your memory is really shot. Whereas, AVP/Aliens can be popped in any old time you wanna pop up some popcorn and rock. But that could be just me.

On the other hand, I never got how films like Lust, Caution, Henry and June and Happiness were NC-17 (the former two aren't that graphic while the more graphic elements of Happiness are off-screen).
Huh? Are you talking about the little tiny bug?

The violence in Prometheus wasn't gratuitous enough to warrant an NC-17. It's not even a hard R - apart from a few shots it could've passed for PG-13.

I liked it, despite its flaws (sporadically corny and lazy writing). 2 hours just flew by. Both, Fassy and that Danish girl were both good in it.

7.5/10

It could be. haha For me, anytime I want unsettling sci-fi horror with implications of rape creeping around every corner, marvelously biomechanical production design, and perfect pacing, I put in Alien.

^This

I felt that Prometheus was a relatively soft-R, the film felt like they were on track with a PG-13 rating but then it was suddenly changed to an R-Rating during production.

+1 on that. Starship Troopers has aged very well indeed, it still looks incredible and I still think how the hell did they do that?!

If you liked Noomi Rapace in Prometheus, get yourself the Swedish version of Millenium, preferably the long "series" version. She totally owns the role and makes Rooney Mara look like an amateur (and I like Mara's version too).

I've just returned from the future. Prometheus: The Engineer and Prometheus: Trinity are awesome. You guys are going to like the two sequels, not to mention the Prometheus TV series.

One thing annoys me about the Prometheus Blu-Ray edition... with today's seamless branching technology, which was used with success for e.g. the Avatar Extended Edition, why didn't they make a Prometheus Extended Edition with all the deleted scenes which are all in 1080P on the disc? For instance, the scene where Vickers is shocked after she had to kill Charlie adds a LOT to that character, shows that she's still human under that hard corporate skin. I really don't understand Scott on this one - he usually makes great Director's Cuts, I think I missed a big opportunity here. He didn't have to name it "Director's Cut", just "Extended Edition", with more material seamlessly blended into the movie for the fans.

EDIT: now that I think about it, I'm actually tempted to do this myself... I have the tools since I work in the movie/video industry (software engineer). I just have to dump the whole parts and insert them at the right places.
