And then viewers argue why Vickers and Shaw didn’t just immediately run to the side instead of forward. People don’t always make the smartest decisions under pressure. Case in point in a real-life situation. Prometheus actually gets people’s stupidity right. It might be stupid, but the behavior is realistic.

[Show spoiler]I once viewed a video, also taken from a distance, of a shipping container falling on top of a person ... if you could imagine that scene from Lethal Weapon 2 ...

It's disappointing that they did that just for some extras I only watched once, where he plays his younger self. Should have just used an old actor. Although, maybe in one of the earlier scripts his younger self is featured.

This is depressing. Still will never watch Covenant.

It's mind boggling.

You prompted me to find out if Alien 3 and Covenant had the same producers or writers. One of the producers is the same, but it doesn't mean much. I did find this, though.

Quote:
It wasn't until a script draft written by Vincent Ward that the idea of killing off Hicks and Newt was first introduced, although they were originally killed by Xenomorphs aboard the Sulaco. Ward later revealed that killing Newt was one of his first priorities, as the character had annoyed him.

You've gotta be kidding me.

They didn't even have to kill Newt and Hicks to remove them. Could have just started with Ripley on Earth or somewhere and featured the two for like one minute instead of making Ripley get lost again. Alien 3 bored me.

Ripley getting home between Aliens and Alien 3 would have explained why she looks so much older from Alien to Alien 3 despite being in cryostasis almost the whole time.

This is a perfect movie to watch during December as it's set over Christmas.

This is depressing. Still will never watch Covenant.
You are correct. The original plan was for Max von Sydow to play Weyland. Then they got the idea that when David visits Weyland in his dreams (during the voyage), there would be a sequence showing what Weyland is "dreaming". During the voyage he's hanging out on a superyacht somewhere tropical, and he's young and surrounded by women. They have the "try harder" conversation that Vickers asks about. The scene was cut before they filmed it because it would have been expensive and they realized they didn't need it. If they had known they were going to end up dropping it, they would have stuck with Max von Sydown, who would have been amazing.

I'm one of those people who doesn't mind Guy Pearce or his makeup, although it does seem like a strange casting decision until you hear the complicated backstory that led to it. The one advantage was the viral video, but how many people actually watched that?

As for Covenant... the less said the better, although I think comparing it with Alien3 is extremely apt because it sounds like Fox really messed with that movie from the script all the way to the final cut and music. I don't know if Scott realized how many concessions he was going to have to make when he started. Certainly it doesn't line up with his original Prometheus trilogy plans in the slightest. I've never been so disappointed by a movie in my life.

If I recall correctly, Damon Lindelof commented on Covenant and said that the film appeared to be "a detour" on the way to the original plan for Prometheus 2. Perhaps Scott still gets to tell the story he wanted, except that Fox wanted him to add more humans to the story, somehow, and reintroduce a human ship and the xenomorph. They basically spent an entire film realigning the story, only to realize that it was a huge mistake. It was the lowest-grossing Alien movie (adjusted for inflation). In fact, I believe each Alien movie has made less than the one before it (when you adjust for inflation). The only movie that broke that trend was Prometheus (coming in third behind Alien and Aliens). I think Prometheus was more successful than people give it credit for and the franchise probably should have continued in that vein. Covenant just returned to the old trend and shows that the Alien franchise is kind of dead. Their best hope is going high-concept sci-fi like Prometheus did. It was the first Alien film in decades that drew an audience beyond core Alien fans. That's my opinion.

It was also a waste of Ridley Scott making a sci-fi film. I love the idea of Scott doing a Hammer horror film in space, but as a sequel to Prometheus that just won't do. Better luck next time, Ridley. If Fox/Disney lets him, I know he can knock it out of the park. But Fox seemed to have been going through a period where they were messing with all of their big sci-fi movies (The Predator, Covenant, Ad Astra, Dark Phoenix). No wonder they imploded.

The only way I can watch Prometheus is by pretending Covenant never happened. It's just too sad. That franchise has so much potential and Covenant was such a sad case of studio inference.

EDIT: I say "the less said about Covenant the better" and then write four paragraphs. I'm TOTALLY over that movie lol

Agreed. It also has some religious themes so it fits right in with the holiday. And the Engineer is sort of like Santa Claus since he was planning on bringing some presents to Earth. It’s a very cozy movie.

It really comes down to what kind of story you can tell.

With Hicks and Newt, there needs to be some motivation for why they are still in the story. It's much easier to tell a story with just one protagonist. This is not saying Alien 3 is a good movie - I tend to think it's awful, but I did like the potential for it to have been unique, exploring the spiritual or religious journey of Ripley (which they completely cut out or abandoned).

As to Prometheus 2, I was disappointed with Shaw's story being derailed, but again, I think it would have been difficult to tell that story. I mean, where does that go - have her meet the engineers and just like, talk? There needed more humans involved for us to reflect on Shaw's thoughts and spiritual journey, and feel the stakes of that outcome.

So all of this to say, I agree with the sentiment, but in practice it would have taken a lot of creativity to have done something different.

Maybe she would have killed "God." That could be interesting. Can't think of any stories that did that, aside from the game Bayonetta and the comic Preacher.

I suppose David would have helped us reflect on her thoughts. It would have been an eerily lonely horror movie. All it would have lacked is humans getting killed. But Prometheus was exciting/frightening even when extraterrestrials were getting killed.
