Alien as genetically engineered military weapon, check. Corrupt military contractor with smarmy pr reps, check. Tough guys being reduced to drooling, crying goo when confronted with toothy grinning, hungry alien, check. Space crew meandering into dark, dangerous caves and getting mauled, check. Gutsy brunette heroine of varying heights, check. Gutsy brunette heroine getting frustrated with limited interactive options available to her as a result of the spaceship's programming protocol, check. Rubber puppets covered in massive quantities of aloe vera, check. Synthetic human getting decapitated and holding corny conversation with said brunette heroine afterwards, check. There are only so many times these tropes and gimmicks can get trotted out without the audience doing a series of facepalms at the undue, color by numbers repetition. The franchise concluded beautifully with aliens. Everything afterwards has been warmed over, rehashed, and become continually less interesting with each iteration. Enough is enough! There is a difference between exploring similar themes and simply recycling the exact same ideas from one movie to the next.
For example, the beauty and the beast is shared by disney's animated film of the same name, king kong, and as good as it gets. Yet, in each, the acting is inspired, the characters quite different in the details, and each film is powerfully moving in it's own way. Now, let's take Prometheus. Lone survivor: brunette heroine. Genetically engineered alien, fake human corrupted by the corporation then helps heroine when it's body is destroyed, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. IT IS THE EXACT SAME MOVIE. THERE IS NO VARIATION. |

Well I have to disagree with that. Good thing film is subjective though.
![]() Prometheus was one of my favorite films this summer, I loved the themes and how it demanded more from its viewers than a typical 'turn your brain off summer romp' |

I enjoyed it and have it on pre-order. I was a little disappointed after all the hype and also what I felt were misleading trailers, but I should have known it was never going to live up to expectations. Looking forward to my second viewing and just taking it for what it is rather than what I wanted it to be.
The strangest thing for me was actually how close the plot mirrored AVP. I'm not joking. I posted this before so apologies for posting it again: [*]Scientists discover archaeological finds of great significance linking the ascent of man to a race of aliens who visited earth [*]These discoveries are mirrored around the world [*]Mr. Weyland bankrolls an expidition to discover the truth of these discoveries and the implications therein [*]Weyland himself tags along and ultimately dies on the trip [*]Scientists discover an alien building oduring their expidition, go inside and discover the makers have housed a different species of deadly alien in there that subsequently attacks the humans [*]Several humans get lost and ultimately succumb to a bitter end inside this Alien building at the hands of this new species [*]Inside the building, the humans discover wall markings/holograms that conveniently explain why the building is there, who made it and what the Alien backstory is [*]Almost all characters are poorly fleshed out, the audience given little reason to care about them and they die one-by-one in either stupid, illogical or obvious ways [*]One female protagonist survives in the end after a fight with both the Alien and the other species this alien has kept in the building [*]One of the final scenes is an Alien spacecraft taking off and flying away into outer space [*]The final scene is a "new" type of specie bursting from the chest of the original alien creature [*]We are left with an ending to the film just begging for a sequel |

^ And when you pointed those out originally we were all quick to point out that AVP had those points in common with Alien.

Funny thing. When i first saw it i thought it was good. After the IMAX 3D showing me and my friend basically had a conversation about the movie that lasted about an hour. Basically creating theories about the plot and connections to the alien movies.(We've seen the Alien movies, but never really deepened into the mythos of the franchise.)
Now the last week i've been listening to the soundtrack(which has grown on me quite a bit) and the movie has suddenly become one of my top most-wanted releases of 2012 ![]() ![]() |
