he mentioned putting bums in seats and that he was a businessman, so I feel the theatrical cut is (once again) a compromise between him and the studio.

He obviously cannot outright say this but I think that is what went down.

Also he's probably thinking more and more about an extended cut because everyone keeps pressuring him in press junkets.
I think he has a responsibility to sell the film they are releasing. It's clear from all of the lack of character development and plot holes that there's a 3hr movie in there dying to get out. It's totally natural for him to back the released work, and financial suicide to tell people in junkets that he would have preferred to release a different version. After all he has to sell the film.

Anyway, I was quoting the man himself so don't take my word for it.

If I had to guess we'll get the theatrical release on blu first and a couple of years down the line we'll gen an extended/director's cut. I just wouldn't expect one on the initial blu ray release

I loved this movie! It has to be the best sci fi film since Blade Runner and probably the most complex and existential since 2001. Some critics have bad mouthed it and said that Ridley was trying to be Terrence Malick. I think that Malick is trash and he Scott would never attempt to replicate him. Prometheus was a fantastic film that managed to discuss difficult subjects and still deliver some action around it. Perfect 10/10!

Default No Directors cut....or is there?

Scott is famous not only for including a director's cut on DVD but for often having that Director's Cut be loads better than the version released in cinemas, and here's what he shared in response to JimmyO's question:

"No, I think this is a good length. But that said, I think that now the fashion of actually putting out a couple of discs is here to stay, which will comfort you on all other kinds of conversation about how the movie was made. All you’ll really do is see extended scenes in the menu. Other than that I think this is a pretty good length, the dynamics of this are about right."

http://www.joblo.com/movie-news/jimm...-directors-cut

But then again.....

Even before the film was released, though, director Ridley Scott had suggested that more footage may end up being put back into the film at a later point. Chatting to Collider, he's expanded on this slightly, revealing that there's a wealth of material heading to the DVD and Blu-ray later in the year.

"This is fundamentally the director’s cut", he confirmed of the cinematic release. "But there will be half an hour of stuff on the menu [of the disc release] because people are so into films - how they’re made, how they’re set up, and the rejections in it. That’s why it’s fascinating. So this will all go on to the menu."

Specifically, Scott revealed, there's a fight scene between Noomi Rapace's character and one of the Engineers that we'll be seeing on the disc.

But also, when asked how much longer an extended cut for the disc release would be, he replied "20 minutes".

When then asked if that 20 minutes would be added in for a longer version of the film (as opposed to being available as deleted scenes, presumably), he gave a bit more of a puzzling answer: "Maybe. But I’m so happy with this engine, the way it is right now. I think it’s fine. I think it works. It can go in a section where, if you really want to tap in, look at the menu. To see how things are long, and it’s too long."

Scott continued: "Dramatically, I’m about putting bums on seats. For me to separate my idea of commerce from art - I’d be a fool. You can’t do that. I wouldn’t be allowed to do the films I do. So I’m very user friendly as far as the studios are concerned. To a certain extent, I’m a businessman. I’m aware that’s what I have to do. It’s my job. To say, 'Screw the audience.' You can’t do that. 'Am I communicating?' is the question. Am I communicating? Because if I’m not, I need to address it."

http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/prom...prometheus-cut

My thoughts are liked it, didn't love it. Far too little character development to the extent that
[Show spoiler]it felt like watching a slasher picture waiting for each anonymous crew member to meet their demise. Scottish lady, who was she, why was she there? The two anonymous crew mates who fly the prometheus to its end with the Captain? That is another thing, far too many decisions made without any substance to them. Why did the Captain crash the ship? Where was his emotional resonance to do so? A scene of him reminising about his family or loved ones could have solved that. If you look at Alien and Aliens, a five minute post hypersleep scene told you everything you needed to know about the characters. In Prometheus, we get a mohican guy telling soemeone to basically F off and then he turns out to be the biggest coward of them all.
The film felt chopped, badly edited, badly scripted and in dire need of an extended cut to put some humanity into the crew.
[Show spoiler]Oh and by the way, if you are ever in a foreign land and a snake rears up in front of you, don't try to pet it. That would make you stupid. If you are a botanist, it would make you entirely unbelievable.
2.5/5 seems fair.

I don't know about the Jesus idea being the reason
[Show spoiler]that the Engineers were going to wipe out humanity. I thought that they were essentially intergalatic weapons manufacturers. The seed a planet with a breathable atmosphere (potentially having terraformed it themselves) with DNA to create life. They then return to deliver the black goo to said lifeforms to create the perfect biological weapon. They did not care about humans, they were a means to an end and for all we know, we evolved far further than we were supposed to be allowed to, because the Engineer mission to wipe us out and replace us with Xenomorphs was delayed due to events on LV 22 whatever. Perhaps we evolved a little too far, and when the Engineer realised that we had come far enough to have developed interstellar travel, he pooped himself and lashed out. Imagine a simple biology experiment being left for a thousand, if not millions of years, coming up and shaking your hand. Your first reaction would be to wipe it out. The Alien is produced by mixing the black goo with the DNA seeded on Earth. They had done it before (hence the statue/monument in the ship), they were doing it again but events unfolded that prevented them completing the task. The sequel will probably be a journey to the Engineer homeworld which has been devastated by an outbreak of xenomorphs (like on the Prometheus ship) and also a visual recording of the ship leaving that eventually crashed on LV426 after the pilot was chest burst having escaped the homeworld.
. That article seems to be a bit painting by numbers and filling in gaps, much like my ideas LOL. Damn good read though. I wonder what his take on the final episode of LOST was?

Meh movie was meh.

A potentially "smart" sci-fi dumbed down to Hollywood standards and marketed as a thriller/suspense when it contained no thrills or suspense...

Visually beautiful though. Should make a good looking blu.

I actually thought it was too smart for its own good. Would have been happier if it were dumbed down. There were parts and characters that I really didn't give a shit about.

It's saving grace was the AMAZING sets and design. I'm so amazingly happy that it wasn't a CGI fest.

Which is why I've been saying for years now they should add another forum, solely, for films and their critical responses.
The site would avoid a lot of back/forth that way.
That way all the naysayers have a place to express their outrage over said theatrical/home release.

I loved Prometheus, but I can understand why it isn't universally praised. On the surface it does seem like an average film, but it has an astounding amount of depth for anyone that's willing to study and interpret the clues. On that level, it's far more enjoyable... but that's not for everyone.

In some ways I'd agree. in other ways it's nearly impossible to filter out opinions of a film in the general discussion threads since 99% of the time that's what it evolves (or devolves) into

Obviously there would be some "growing pains", but eventually the bulk of the posters would utlizie a "Negative Review Forum"
Furthermore, posters who like the film would then have grounds to direct the naysayer to that forum. In most cases it would police itself...at least in theory!
Doubt it would ever happen...heck I can't even get them to update the Wishlist forum! I even offered to do it!!!

Okay, back to the topic. So if this isn't to be considered part of the Alien Universe....or maybe just part of the Alien "DNA", I'm guessing this won't be in a new Alien boxed set? If there was one in the works?
