Trumbull did say he thought it was projected much too bright in that talk, but he also mentioned the shutter closures as to why it might look like television when those aren't included with the DCP. Could you tell us more in detail what he said at the SMPTE?
I read the entire thread on film tech and it is scary, do you think that maybe they got too ambitious with all the different versions? It just seems weird to me that there seems to be such a lack of preparation, but then again, The Hobbit is a blockbuster, and it didn't have nearly as many versions as Billy Lynn does. Like I said earlier, they might have scaled back the HFR release (at least, if it doesn't change) so they could make sure that the limited number of theaters showing it in HFR will be up to the task. At least, there's a decent number of Dolby Cinema theaters: https://www.amctheatres.com/dolby And hopefully, them having more time for the release overseas means maybe more HFR over there. About the Dolby Vision version, it just is what it is, 2K 120 fps 3D & 2D, I guess it can't do more. The Christie 4KLH is the only projector able to show the movie in its ultimate version. |

I'm sure they could do a 4K 3D DV presentation at 24fps (and maybe higher) but from reading between the lines it would appear that they've prioritised the frame rate over the spatial resolution...and seeing as HFR gives you back a ton of temporal resolution that's otherwise lost I'd say it's an even trade-off (and makes me rather excited at the prospect of seeing a 60p version with proper UHD-rez on disc). |

Seriously, if they put it out on 60 fps on UHD (which would be neat, but I just don't know if it's a pure fantasy), this will be the best looking UHD disc by far. (even in 24 fps though).
Watching the second trailer on the big screen, it already astounds me with its clarity, the F65 looks really great, and I'm a film guy. |

.https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...276605&page=27 . If mem serves, near the mid? or end? of his keynote. And also in a broadcast beat interview video with him from the event…… which I now see has since been deleted by BB after having been available for at least a couple days. I don't know what's up with that. |

You mean because it needs two of those for the 4K 120 fps 3D or something else? I just meant that it's the only projector capable of displaying the movie, not mentioning the whole pipeline needed.
Thanks for the video with Doug Trumbull, working fine for me. |

Projectors get all the recognition from most lay press, but don’t forget the importance of the ….. servers. As I was trying to indicate in the couple paragraphs above the sketch , servers are the heart of that system allowing playback of “the whole shebang”. And the servers (although different from those in the sketch) are also the crux factor as to the ability of Dolby Cinemas or regular digital cinemas to show the 120fps versions. |

I never even thought of those being so crucial but that diagram made it very clear for a dilettante like myself, e.g. once the movie is downloaded online or off the drive then it still needs to be 'fed' to all the respective digital projectors in da house, so having all that server capacity is crucial. Never clocked it before.
Some of the guys in the film-tech Billy Linn thread were very wary of that film just being an excuse to get the theater owners to upgrade their equipment yet again, which made me laugh as it doesn't matter what side of the cinematic chain you inhabit - consumer or professional - you're still gonna be hurting for upgrades if you wanna keep up with the Joneses (or the Lees, in this case). |

250Mb/s vs. 500Mb/s DCPs and compression is a discussion best left for another day. |

oh I'm sorry for being redundant.
oh and AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13's online tickets are up for purchase as well - I'm almost tempted to go up for the day and catch a screening - four hours on a bus or car... eh, hmmm. Last edited by Dubstar; 11-02-2016 at 07:32 PM. |
