Wouldn't it be easier to launch UHD with titles such as 'True Lies' and 'The Abyss', rather than than 'Smurfs 2' and 'Pineapple Express'?
ask Fox, not Sony

Will do , Dub, you still in the District, or do I tap a Md. zip code?

The new mantra is “HDR is in our DNA” , thusly….

kids can’t pronounce, nor know nothing much of Nietzsche….but they hold the key to family disposable income....and have no problem at all with sitting closer to the TV than the 'accepted' norm.

Because that's how panel manufacture is turning, sure, every new TV will be 4K by default soon enough. Doesn't mean that UHD Blu-ray will suddenly take off though, as flat screen TVs becoming HD by default certainly didn't help Blu-ray become the dominant force in the home video market because DVD 'looked good enough', just as Blu-ray will look 'good enough' to the average joe on a 4K TV.

If anything UHD is just gonna cannibalise the 30-ish-percent share that Blu-ray currently has in the physical media stakes.

It won't take off, its the new laserdisc.
But a pretty brightly coloured kids movie if you have kids is not a bad thing to show off

Ha, I still think there will be way more people buying it just because it's UHD software to show on their 4K TV than just getting it for their sprogs. I can imagine the excuses now when matey takes it to the counter and is met by a withering look: "it's for the kids!". Yeah right.

why? Do you think a parent should see their kid as less worthy (this title is for me so I want X but Y will do for my kid)? also can't mummy or daddy watch the film with their kid?

I agree and that is why launch titles are always kind of crappy it is the easiest way to get someone to buy it and make some extra money off of the title.

why does it need to be one or the other and it can't be both? can't someone get Pineapple Express for themselves, SM2 for (or to watch with) their teen and smurfs 2 to watch with their 6 year old?

For engineering excellence, 4K and HDR devices win HPA awards…

Colorfront gets honorable mention for interactive HFR (high frame rate) frame-blending (e.g. download the clip after action near the end of this post -

... and what are you going to do with it after you burn through those three mildly entertaining titles?

... and if you make to the twentieth viewing of Smurfs without smurfing your whole family, then maybe you are UHD worthy.

I agree that there is no problem with having several HDR standards (broadcast, movies, game consoles, computers, etc...) but it may take a few years before a consumer can buy a display that will work with all of them. Consumers will be not be happy if they connect a cable box or game console and find out that it uses a different type of HDR than what their TV supports.

It should be noted that the PQ advocates and the HLG advocates each believe their respective system is the only one consumers would ever require….which has led to some delay of a single standard to define image dynamic range to add to what Rec.2020 gave to UHD.
I like that PQ expands the lower end of the dynamic range but it seems more likely to cause problems. PQ uses absolute brightness values so it would be easy to blast light at such a high level that it causes irritation or pain. HLG is a relative brightness system so you can simply set the peak brightness to a reasonable level depending on the viewing area. I think it will take a few years to get a good idea of how well they will do since early adopters tend to be more forgiving of flaws than mainstream consumers (an example would be 3D TVs).
