It's great to see the new titles being announced from Warner Bros, but with Fury Road, San Andreas, Pacific Rim and Man of Steel all now announced it does rather fuel the existing quandary for 3D fans.
As it is, if you want a 3D version of the film as well as 4K, you'll have no option but to double dip. I take it there's no prospect of resolving this in the 4K releases, other than to include a third, 3D disk in the package, presumably bumping up the price? It's interesting that the 4K blus are going to also include 1080p blus, as this is surely going to bump up costs to the consumer as it is? To be honest, I'm surprised that the new 4K blus are coming with 1080p versions bundled in with them. I can understand the desire to encourage non-4K display owners to future-proof themselves, but surely it's going to make these new releases even more costly in comparison with 1080p blu-ray equivalents? If the 4K disks are going to be region free, what about the 1080p blus? Will they just be the standard, existing region-coded titles lumped into the case alongside them? Finally, does anyone know if this 'early in 2016' 4K UHD blu-ray launch is going to be global, or if it'll start first in the likes of North America, South Korea and Japan before gradually reaching the rest of the world? It will just piss off the people that believe they should be getting movies for $10 or less... And that's not the market they will be, or should be, aiming at out of the blocks. The opportunity to own a movie isn't an entitlement... fitprod *Now if Fox is going only release full supplements with The Martian 3D disc, as they have done with Ridley Scott's Prometheus and Exodus: Gods and Kings, I'll be annoyed. Especially since I know the supplements have been produced in 4K. - Let's hope they're not that stupid. Last edited by fitprod; 12-30-2015 at 01:18 PM. |

I'd be a smart and inventive move on Universal's part to also remix these in either Dolby Atmos or DTS-X for both of those movies. ~~ as other's have pointed out, I'm in the 'please include the 3D version in the UHD release' camp too ... double dipping is annoying AND expensive. |

As for 3D I am more concerned about whether or not immersive audio is included or not. I can remember buying Superman Returns on Blu-ray it only had Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, as it was a new title I didn't see them double dipping too soon so I got a copy, unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you look at it Warner Bros. released a Dolby True HD release not long after, I was furious to begin with but got over it as I was glad to have the film in Dolby True HD. I can see the like of Man of Steel only having a standard Dolby True HD track to being with as was the case with Superman Returns a Dolby ATMOS track will follow shortly after. As a result of this I will only be buying titles that have either a Dolby ATMOS sound track or a DTS: X track. Back to 3D I personally think it is a forgone conclusion that it will happen but like with Blu-ray it will be a long time coming and it will require a new player. It's not too much of a problem for me as I only really want Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3D, Jaws 3D and Amityville 3D, neither Jaws 3D or Friday the 13th part 3 in 3D seem to have a snowballs chance in hell of seeing a 3D release Jaws 3 has all long to see a standard release. As for the full details on Ultra HD Blu-ray I think the wait will be completely over at CES 2016. |

Man of Steel is going to be a launch title and it's going to be Atmos - Warner's Vudu UHD version is Atmos so I don't see the UHD-BD going backwards on that. |
