Weird how there's no chatter about Nolan's films from WB when outside of Transcendence he's really the only blockbuster filmmaker under the studio who consistently masters and renders in 4K. People have been clamoring for a new TDK transfer for some 7 years, too.
He must be suspicious of the HDR standards. |

Meh. It seems like 20+ of Warner's 35 titles this year are also available in 3D which means I'm not interested in the 4K version. Maybe I'll get BvS in both but that depends on how they release this R rated Director's Cut.
Hopefully somebody announces some catalog titles soon. The schedule looks pretty barren with only 2-3 new releases coming out each month. |

Then again, the format has only just launched and none of the studios is offering up a crown jewel of their catalogue now or in the immediate future, so perhaps there's no conspiracy. After all, there's no word on Harry Potter in UHD just yet from Warners and I doubt that those directors have enough clout to withold their movies. I think the point is simply that HDR is the big talking point about this product launch, and actual 4K resolution content has been knocked down the pecking order as far as tech press column inches are concerned. |

Also, I'm a bit confused about 10-bit ~ HDR. I understand if there were more bits, effects such as banding would be reduced (even with dither). But how does it use it for HDR? |

The format does not require HDR, no. But, as we were just saying in another thread, the studios are going all-out for HDR as the weapon of choice to sell this new format to consumers, so non-HDR content won't fit the "journey" or the "brand profile" or whatever umbrella of corporate bullshit it falls under. We will see some SDR UHD discs, I'm sure of it, but it probably won't be for a while.
As for your other question: my speculative tech 'knowledge' can only carry me so far, I'm not touching that one. Best wait for someone who knows what they're talking about. ![]() |

Also I noticed that with ICtCp the I channel (luma channel) is different than it is for IPT. With IPT the L (red cone), M (green cone), and S (blue cone) are used to make the luma channel but with ICtCp it only uses L and M for the luma channel. That makes me wonder how well ICtCp will handle shades of blue especially when combined with chroma subsampling. It will be interesting to see the test results for ICtCp at the next HEVC meeting. Quote:
10-bit video allows for 1024 levels of grayscale while 8-bit video only allows for 256 levels. 10-bit video is needed for HDR, which also uses new transfer functions, and even than it is barely sufficient. The ITU report on HDR has a few charts on bit depth and HDR. |
