The ones I use at the moment are a bit too wide to fit the SteelBooks tightly. I need to find some that are a closer fit.

I have cats who love to climb and knock stuff around....plus normal shelf wear from the bottom's, or whatever other potential problems arise. That's why I got my sleeves. It's the same as protecting trading cards, phone cards, coins, etc....

I use sleeves and love them I figured when u first buy them they come in plastic and some collectors never open there steelbooks at all. The only diffrence is the steelbook looks cleaner in sleeves with no stickers or anything. Just my 2 cents.

In my opinion, unless you live in an extremely humid environment that can't be controlled, it's best to just leave them on your shelf uncovered.
What you're referring to is plastic materials that contain PVC. If PVC is in plastics the material will degrade over time and release chemicals that can damge metals. Ideally you would want something that is made of mylar which is considered to archival quality for storing things meant to be preserved for long periods of time.

makes me laugh when people post pics of there steelbook collection and every steelbook is covered in plastic wrapping lol i think it just looks ugly and wrecks the look of a collection on a shelf, but each to there own
Plastic bags are fine and they don't look stupid. deltasun's picture is a prime example of how I have my steelbooks wrapped. I've never had a rust problem with any of my steels. They are used for protection and I've been using them since I started collecting steelbooks about 3 years ago and they work fine.

I protect mine by opening them, watching them, and leaving them on the shelf with all my other movies. Have yet to have any damage done and this way they get used. Cause let's face it, these aren't comic books. In 20, 30, 40 years we all aren't going to be retiring off the sale of these by keeping them in mint condition for generations. Once this tech goes out of date, they will all drop in price to a fraction of their current values.

I keep them in the bags, but that is only because I don't want to spend money to replace them if they get damaged.

The bags are basically just slipcovers to me, as I still take them out and watch them. I have no intention of reselling them.

Vinyl begs to differ

There will always be a demand by collectors but i understand what you mean, it could be little compared to what it peaked at. Unfortunately nobody knows unless they been to the future or had a premonition. Hindsight is a beautiful thing, only it comes later.

I think Blu-ray could be the last physical form of media for films, so SteelBooks might hold their value well.

HVD - Holographic versatile disks. That is most likely the last step on the optical media wagon potentially. They hold far larger sizes than Blu-ray could dream of. They start with sizes from like 1TB and go up to like 3
5TB if memory serves right.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_disk

Thing is, there are other disk formats also being developed so could be anyone of them that does it. Phsyical media i hope lives for as long as possible but i think Blu-ray will be here to stay for another gen, even if the resolution of the content on the disk does increase. Blu-ray 2k maybe? 4k sounds more of a jump from 1080p personally speaking

I use plastic sleeves. I bet if I opened my oldest re-sealed case it would have no rust or degrading qualities.

Something on the outside of the sleeve must degrade it. Its not going to degrade from the inside.

why not wrap your steel books in bubble wrap then put it inside a drawer so the risk of damage would be minimized...

Those are the ones I use too. I just put a piece of scotch tape to keep it sealed

I would but i'm asking people where they get their bubble wrap G2 size stuff from and i haven't seen a reply yet lol.

I would re-seal em into the plastic sleeve and then bubble wrap bag. I've already started taking the disks out and putting them in a seperate DVD holder bag for when i want to watch em. Was a great suggestion by another member

A member asked if the sleeves I use are good for slipcovers. Yes, they are. Adding this to the discussion cause most of us have at least one slip.

Do these bags fit G1 sized steelbooks? Or just G2?

Since I used to collect comic books, I had quite a few unused 'mylar' sleeves that I thought would be perfect for protecting a Steelbook edition blu-ray. I think they are ideal, and on my 'gallery' under my profile you can see that they are a bit larger than the Steelbook case....but they look absolutely amazing with the nice glossy look to the mylar sleeve. Also, it gives me peace of mind knowing that the 'spine' along the bottom of these mylar sleeves is thick enough that the Steelbook never actually touches the shelving I have them placed in, so there is no chance for damage from removing it to and from the shelving units. See 'Cars 2' among the Disney blu-rays placed on the shelf on one of my photos in the gallery to illustrate how the Steelbook is 'lifted' due to the mylar sleeve spine along the bottom, thereby protecting the case from scrapes/scratches along the bottom.

So if you don't mind not having a 'perfect snug fit' around the Steelbook, this is the only way to go in my opinion for a very nice way to preserve your case and have it look really great at the same time in this sleeve type.
