I think the projection system is amazing, but to my eye, 2K doesn't hold up on a screen that size. I was sitting about in the middle of the auditorium when I watched The Force Awakens, and other than the IMAX sequence, it looked really blurry. The best-looking part of the show was the IMAX intro.

And how does it compare to film or any other projection technology?

I've only seen it with 3D glasses so I don't know if I've gotten a good feel for its capabilities, but the contrast ratio blows away any film projection I've seen. It's really bright, but the blacks are black. A top quality 70mm IMAX print still theoretically has higher resolution than 4K, and you can see pixels in the IMAX intro clip if you squint, but it's still really sharp on a giant screen.

I do, but point is I’ve long felt that he’s been a hard working, talented DP, who, until recently has gone relatively underappreciated by home theater enthusiasts as compared to other names in the business. For that matter, another being Matty Libatique . Heads-up Matty, ‘kumusta ka’?

Anyway long story short as to the background on that part of my Signature was that it was added back in 2010 when Haiti suffered its catastrophic 7.0 earthquake and I, by doing a tie-in for video geeks to the music video shot by C.M., was bringing more awareness to the tragedy and encouraging readers to pause for a moment during their continuous pursuit of self gratification thru entertainment and donate to some charitable organization aiding Haiti. Around the same time, fellow Blu-ray.com Insider Jeff Kleist lamented (and I agreed) that after a year or so everyone would forget the neediness of the people in Haiti, which is why it has remained in my signature for so long.

Personally, I hope someday the movie comes to fruition as it brings back fond memories of the lead up to and watching the fight live (projected on the big screen) with some of my best friends from school back in the day.

Although Richard and I have been discussing thee particulars of it for months, recently, shortly after this conversation on another thread with Deci, the Site Manager, and fellow Insider Robert Zohn of Value Electronics, the slideshow from the Ultra HD Forum press conference which includes an overview of Plugest #1(facilitated by ViXS’s golden reference decoder) and most significantly, UHD Guidelines for 2016 deployments, has finally been published online for public viewing…..http://www.slideshare.net/BenSchwarz...ess-conference

As you’ll note in slide #3 ‘The Good Sign’ is that it is aligned with ITU’s DNR ITU-R BT.[HDR-TV]. For those new readers to the 4K Movies Releases thread totally unfamiliar with HLG, check out ARIB STD-B67 which is freely available in pdf form online, or for those fellow colleagues reading involved in other ITU Study Groups or liasons, check out Table 5 of http://www.itu.int/md/R15-SG06-C-0039 .

As far as the next to the last slide at the end, ‘What’s next?’… HFR
dynamic metadata, backward compatible, ICtCp color etc., well, we have been discussing (with exclusive illustrations like for ICtCp from the original investigators) those next gen parameters for weeks/months. So for cutting edge, see the respective underlined hyperlinks as a segway into additional information.

^ I love slide 12, it says something which sums up the current situation (HDR mapping from display to display, SDR conversion etc etc ) nicely:

"Seeing the picture doesn't mean it is correct"

I have however made my peace with this outlook and am expecting my Panasonic UHD player to arrive tomorrow. Let the incorrect viewing commence! HUZZAH!

I am glad that they released this information but I am kind of surprised that they didn't wait until CES 2017. I guess the idea is to hammer out what they are planning to use and announcing it so that everyone will be on the same page going forward.

The numerical keypad on the remote should facilitate your journey into testing the free calibration color windows (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...r#post12055164)...
as they’re plenty of dem color patterns to choose from along with a few HDR contrast patterns on the Sony Ultra HD Blu-ray discs.

So much of that slideshow with my associated editorializing is cutting edge HDR-TV concepts-related, I must think of a 4K-ish type post so as not to get dvdmike down. He contributed a nice post related to audience response at NAB 2016 for Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk……thinking…..shoot and I wanted to get out of here by 7 P.M…..see what I do for you mike!!

As I'm typing this post the tech specs on imdb for Café Society are actually incomplete as they only list the Sony F65 camera; however, fact is, the F55 was utilized for the steadicam shots. Among the cameras in the Sony CineAlta stable, the F65 remains the Gold standard for big screen projection if one has a critical eye, although if the cinematographer is careful during acquisition the F65 and F55 intercut well in post as mentioned last August.

As an aside, in the DI suite after having seen how well an HDR grade improves/expands the picture quality as compared to truncated traditional (SDR) grading and delivery, Vittorio Storaro was very excited by the possibility of sometime doing an HDR version of Café Society.

So i think the general consensous after only 2 days is that The Revenant is now the reference/go to disc for the 4k HDR format.

Is there any way to PROVE that the disc is 66G? because i was thinking, this movie is pretty much perfect. Theres no signs of compression whatsover. No banding like there is in the Martian. If they can fit a 3 hour movie onto a 66G disc with this type of quality, theres almost no reason to even bother using a 100G disc is there? besides a 4 hour a movie.

I'd say the lack of extras is a big reason.

And Dolby Vision 12-bit will need additional space.

I also would not put much into disc size and PQ right now, until things even out a little.

When I used to backup my blu-rays, I was shocked at the amount of them you could get onto a 25gig BD once you stripped it down to a movie and audio.

Since it was shot digitally and has an exceptionally clean look (no film grain), it will also compress much easier than a lot of other films will.

There's a very high tech way of telling how many layers it has: you look at the inner rings on the disc. Depending on the replicator they might be labelled 0 and 1, 1 and 2 or whatever. The Sony discs even say USDL (as in, double layer) on the ring.
