The How-To Geek Guide to 3D Monitors and TVs
I currently own a 34 inch Sony XBR800 720p/1080i CRT TV and the picture quality is fantastic for blu ray, but I feel like I am missing out on full 1080p picture quality, though. I want to upgrade to a 47 inch 1080p 3D TV. Is it worth the money to upgrade? Or should I just be happy with a 34 inch TV from 6-8 feet away?

Thanks

It doesn't really count as a big screen unless it's 60" or bigger.

True that.

It's almost laughable how I was originally debating between the 50" and 60" SXRD thinking the 60 might be too big. Dang thing seems to have shrunk since I know I could fit a 70-75" in that same niche.

I really wish Sony hadn't cancelled the SXRD rear projectors. flat panel form factor means nothing to me.

Penton. I'll be going to the sony store today to check out this- http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/sto...ntifier=S_4KTV

I'll let everyone know what i think and if it turns me into a true 4k believer. Im bringing some BD's with me too to see how good the 4k upscaling works. Hopefully they'll have sony's upscaling player hooked up.

Consider buying a Mitsubishi RPTV. They're really quite affordable and the PQ of RPTV's has greatly improved in the last few years.

Not sure if this was asked, but how much more would source material need to be compressed to fit more data for 4K releases on a blu-ray disc? What's the point if you are going to have to compress the data even more?

So i got to see the sony 4K set and it was impressive. It wasn't OMG impressive but it looked great. It was good to confirm that there's not really night and day differences between 1080p and 4K like i've been saying. Thats not to say i didn't see the benefits of 8 million pixels. I surely did. There is no pixel grid up close. I had my nose to the screen and not a pixel in sight. Detail is also better resolved. Faces show more texture and have an overall real look to them. Like nothing is in front of the screen. Just the person. Don't know if that makes sense. Colors are better (10 bit color penton?). There was demo of a soccer match and the players uniform really popped off the screen. In this clip everything was better separated. As in the image wasn't just one big picture. You could see each and every little thing on screen. I liked that. Images of rooms and buildings looked really good. Again, they had the look of nothing being in front of the TV. Just the objects. Like someone placed them inside the TV.

As i stepped back about 12' the 4K difference went away. A little. I still saw detail but not as much. 1080p and 4K would about equal at far away distances. I know, i know, one of the points of 4K is being able to sit closer but it's just something i noticed. I don't understand how 4K will stand out with smaller displays. But i haven't see one yet.

I wanted to watch actual films but the employee said that they can only show the demo sony has for the TV. Too bad. I really wanted to see some blurays upscaled to 4K.

So based off the sony demo 4K looks great. I expected better from reading other peoples reviews on what they've seen of 4K but "stunning" and "remarkable" didn't come to my mind. Not saying 4K is useless. It's not. There are advantages and i easily saw them. Penton should be proud.

Let me repeat that this is from the sony demo. Thats the only 4K source i saw. I have yet to see other sources, films, or other kinds 4K video. But for now im content with my 60" kuro.

Some people resent anything that comes out that is better than what they have. Keep that in mind.

You should get a medal just for dealing with the traffic in that area…at least based upon the last time I was in that neck of the woods.

Perhaps so, but keep in mind that Sony used to have an ‘elite’ (think very expensive) line called Qualia. I think you might be surprised how quickly the pricing dropped from the original MSRP on, for instance, the Qualia 004 (front projector) and the Qualia 006 (RPTV)…or, how these initial flagship models are essentially replaced by much cheaper and better (the KDS-R70XBR2 over the Qualia 006) models.

Like most things in life…..Depends.
Depends on the codec, the capacity of the Blu-ray disc (BD50 or larger?) and the frame rate. But when things get wringed out at the end, also, like in life, the result is not uncommonly dependent upon politics and economic concerns of the players involved.

Because advanced compression technology has produced ongoing developments in improved picture quality. Though, as an aside, I’m looking forward to hearing the hallway chatter between presentations at the Symposium here…

https://www.smpte.org/atc2012/symposium with regards to DCI’s recently released statement (see Compression - Bit Rate) “The maximum compressed bit rate for support of all proposed frame rates should be 500 Mb/sec.” with the added *qualifier* Note….
http://www.dcimovies.com/Recommended...ice/index.html

beeeeecause this 500Mb/sec figure is not any advanced compression technology (they just doubled the traditionally issued spec) and was not, to my knowledge, based upon any image testing but simply chosen arbitrarily.

I guess, if I was working a Sony store I wouldn't start messing with store demo displays for everyone but if someone came in who was seriously interested in buying this or something like a VPL-VW1000 they had better hook up a Blu-Ray player and put in almost any disc in asked of them.

I give my honest opinion on 4K after finally seeing it and now it's resentment? You guys are truly something else. Did you even read what i wrote? I clearly mentioned the benefits of 4K over 1080p. But IMO it's not HUGE. Why can't you guys just except that? Do you want everybody to go gaga over 4K and those that don't are somehow bullshiters? Usually i would go off on a stupid post like yours, but im not going to do that. I'll remain calm. I know what i saw. If you think im lying to myself because 4K "is better than what i have" frankly that's too damn bad. I even said im basing what think about 4K on that one sony demo. Im looking forward to seeing more native video. Im also looking to go to another sony store that has a BD player hooked up so i can see actual film. Though not native, im sure it'll give me an idea.

Unbelievable.

^ Sap, well I think you gave a fair assessment . I just didn’t comment because I’m having internet connection problems with my home computer. I’ll try now to contribute some alternative perspective before I get locked out again.
