All of it fades away when the equipment becomes affordable. We saw it with 1080p displays ("720 is fine"), we saw it with BD, we even saw it with DVD. |

I'm hoping that like the Mi4K line of blu-rays that for 4K discs they will think higher in terms of restoration on certain releases (Maybe even a line of Mi8K releases)
Why waste all the time and effort in restoration for titles like My Fair Lady and Lawrence of Arabia (65/70mm) to be mastered in 4K when they should master in 8K. Maybe bigger studio can afford to keep coming back and (re)remastering and its no big deal for them. I've only heard Baraka and Samsara doing 8K mastering. Hearing of directors using higher grade IMAX stock and 6K workflows, why not think ahead. |

8K display devices in the home are a technical and commercial inevitability.
You can argue whether they are practical or necessary til the cows come home. And there are many valid points to be made. But at the end of the day the CE industry needs to keep developing and selling new stuff. |

Content. 8K is too much for 35mm, that tops out at about 6K so unless you're watching films post 2017 your out of luck |

The only way I ever see a smidgen of a possibility of a 8K home media format is if it's in line with the majority of films produced sometime in the future and people want as close to exact replication of that in the home... years down the line. I don't see it happening, though. A lot of people never adopted Blu-ray. 4K Blu-ray will be a further niche within a niche audience. I think it will do well enough to exist and for titles to come out but I don't really forsee even more options down the road. I know technology does tend to improve and new formats come and go over time but we are getting into a territory that currently includes a much smaller pool of films.

4K will keep them busy for a while...we've already had several 'generations' of 4K sets and they will keep offering new generations, gimmicks or genuine improvements over the next few years. These avenues will last them a while, but eventually (sooner than 10 years) they will come back to resolution as the chosen method to offer an upgraded product. It's just a technological inevitability. To say that it won't happen is like saying that "64K memory out to be enough for anybody". |

I can see it happening. One of the scenarios that I can foresee is for multi angle views of sports for example. Say a cricket match, you could have an overall view, one of the wicket, a close up of the crease and maybe even Bumble in a set of simultaneously available windowed views. You would be able choose your main view with a flick of your remote or perhaps a gesture control. In the UK, this would be the Sky-SHD box sitting under your 120 inch telly.
Oh forgot the Holographic Violet-Ray player. ![]() |
