You can record your own camera recordings and maybe videogames, that's it. Doesn't make any sense....
Isn't the HDD in there to copy your UHD BD's to the HDD so you can stream them to another device?

Anyone browsing for a new TV is getting it rammed down their throats at the moment and people were gawping at the sets on display in Currys last weekend when I went past.

(For US readers, Currys is like a Best Buy but a bit more grim)

Yeah, even Supermarkets are selling 4K sets in store. You know when supermarkets get in on the game then it's about to get real.

I really really want a nice 4K OLED, the LG 1080p OLED I saw in John Lewis looked better than the 4K sets they had on display.

The recorder is used to record terrestrial and satellite broadcast programming.
This is a product that will never appear in the European or US market.

CNET produced an article about 4K HDR TV's from Vizio (hold up, don't laugh too soon) they call 'The Vizio Reference Series'. There's a 120" unit for USD$129,999 (cough, expletive, cough) and a 65" unit for $5,999.
http://www.cnet.com/products/vizio-reference-series/

These 2 Vizio units support Dolby Vision HDR. The article seems to have a balanced discussion of 4K and HDR topics.

For Penton, they even mentioned nits readings twice!

So, Panasonic and Sony (where are your HDR & UHDBD product announcements Sony? Why are you hiding???) and Samsung will have another high end 4K competitor. If they (Vizio) are worthy. We'll have to see if some of the new Vizio units get out in the wild and get evaluated.

Dude, they've had high def broadcasts in Japan for about 25 years or so, it makes sense that they're bigger on the recording side of things with BD. And if the device has an internal tuner (which it does) then HDMI has nothing to do with it, it simply records off-air with the only barrier to recordings being if they're broadcast with a copy protection flag.

The first BD machines in Japan were not just simple players but off-air recorders too using caddied BD media (I believe mike posted a picture of one of those behemoths earlier in the thread) so the first Japanese UHD deck having this recording capability doesn't surprise me at all.

Japan had the first standard Blu-Ray recorders first as well, they also had a prototype version of Blu-ray that was on sale that was also a recorder, that was back when Blu-ray required the caddy so the prototype and the actual discs are incompatible.

Digital trends seems to think that the US could see the Panasonic player in December.

Been busy for a while and not following UHD BD news so can anyone confirm or deny the following from High-Def Digest:

Quote:
Ultra HD Blu-ray are the same diameter as Blu-ray, DVD, and CD optical discs, but are capable of storing up to 100GB. You will not need an internet-connection to play UHD Blu-ray Discs, but there is a mechanism in place for such a requirement if content producers want to use them (perhaps as an activation key for pre-release review discs), though implementation will likely be rare.

Ultra HD Blu-rays remain as shareable and re-sellable as Blu-rays with one extra benefit. Kiss Region Coding goodbye -- all UHD Blu-rays are region free.

I was curious about that very same thing. High-Def digest is a pretty reliable source even though they didn't specify which source the listings came from.

That will be good news if no internet (and region free). Still curious though how that will work on discs that allow bit-for-bit copying to the DB hard drive.

Fox has already announced some titles but I would expect the bulk of the UHD Blu-ray news (including launch titles) to hit around CES 2016. There might be some info next week at CEDIA, but I'm expecting the main press events and launch to coincide with CES at this point.

If it's true that these UHD discs will be region free, then it's very strange that the region codes are still being enforced on regular BD's. I have a feeling these new UHD players will still be region-locked for regular BD's.

I guess the BDA Promotions Chairman had it wrong about region coding: https://www.avforums.com/article/the...-blu-ray.11917

Quote:
Will Ultra HD Blu-ray have regional coding?

It will have the same regions as regular Blu-ray which is A, B or C, although it’s up to the studio whether they use any regional coding. I believe it varies from studio to studio and release to release. So I believe it will be exactly the same as regular Blu-ray.

So, from WikiLeaks doc. it seems reasonable that region coding will be dropped from disks with the export digital bridge option.

"2. UHD Blu-ray Region Coding – BD Player manufactures requesting not to use Region Coding in UHD Blu-ray, especially now studios are requesting Export of Disc contents which will not have player unit based region control anyway. BDA is moving this direction, and 3 other studios (WB, Fox, Disney) agreed to drop region coding. – SPC titles has been using region coding for specific acquisition titles."

Also, on line authentication may not be as rare as you think. Particularly if it effectively reduces piracy and ripping.

" 3. Online Key delivery – BDA and AACS studying introduction of online key delivery for UHD Blu-ray to stop pre-street date Disc ripping & piracy. – Sony Corp. BDA members asking whether studios will actually use online key distribution for Disc, and if so, how to mitigate user confusion / frequent customer call. – Online key delivery is part of Hollywood studio next gen security requirements, so majority of AACS companies are supporting introduction of online key delivery system".
