I was referring to the packs that just have one movie but in multiple resolutions. I don't think those are available for sale yet and are download only (although they say you can stream the content if desired, while you wait for your initial download). It will be interesting to see if those UHD encodes will be superior to those already offered from Amazon/Samsung and Sony 4K Unlimited.

I hope the UHD Alliance can put an end to the exclusive arrangements for UHD delivery (Sony/FMP-X10 and Fox/Samsung video pack). Delivery should be consolidated via Digital Bridge in the new UHD players.
Unfortunately, getting agreement on that will be a bit like herding cats. |

Agree it would be ideal to link digital UHD purchases with the digital bridge feature (although not exclusively to it of course). |

Here's something: http://www.engadget.com/2015/05/21/vidity-4k-downloads/
It could be built into players, clearly this digital bridge is going to be a mess of proprietary formats. |

1 more rmk ... I have used this setup for 7 weeks now with no issues. For full-height content I sit abt 128" back from 188" diag. 16:9. Letterbox, I sneak my armchair a few in. closer. (!!!)
Yes I can see 1080p pixel structure. Otherwise the experience is like sitting in front row of oldschool theatre. It's harder to judge shot composition since eyes must rove a bit around image. Easier tho' to read actors' facial expressions esp. in med. shots. 99% of time subject of shot is near centre so no real probs. I guess as 4K comes in and we all have to sit at 1.5 PHs this won't be unusual, hence my qy. I don't sit all that much closer than 1.5 really. 1.39 screen heights to be exact. Somehow HDR w/ intense brightness is an odd fit w/ a big apparent image but there it is. On reflection HDR would've made more sense way back at 2 or 3 PHs. Yet it's being rolled out for content that screams for 1.5er. Last edited by Teazle; 05-21-2015 at 07:24 PM. |

I have mine setup so when I watch 16.9 content I shift the lens down and drop down a Black Mask from the top so I see no gray bar stuff , do not have to look up since my eyes are about level with the picture. |

Have there been any details published regarding the specifications for Samsung's version of HDR? Single layer with metadata? .005 to 1000 nits?
"This has probably got you wondering how exactly I’ve managed to test the UN65JS9000 properly if there’s no native HDR content around. The answer is that thankfully Samsung has been working with Fox to get clips of both The Life Of Pi and Exodus mastered in HDR, and the brand provided me with these clips on a USB stick." http://www.forbes.com/sites/johnarch...oked-brighter/ |

There will be Digital Bridge logos on both UHD BR and BD, And don't forget the logo for HDR which will also be included on UHD BR and BD. The proposals did not discuss logos for HFR or WCG, but they might be included as well.
You may need a magnifying glass to read the micro logos on the disc. ![]() |

Seems to me that the authors of the articles linked require attribution. Someone originally posting a link in a thread does not. What is important is the discussion caused by the link. Sometimes a link is posted and gets lost because the discussion at the time of posting is moving in a different direction. But perhaps I've missed your point?

Pieter posted that link on loads of threads like it was the greatest thing since sliced bread, I thought it worth pointing out that his incredible discovery wasn't so new to people in here, not least because it hadn't gotten "lost" in the mists of time or in the rampant discussion which had advanced by a massive two pages.

No, I quoted reanimator's post to show Pieter that the info about Fox and HDR had been posted already. Pieter has since deleted his post about Fox and HDR in this thread, which now makes me look like I'm replying to no-one in particular.

I came across this blog while looking for some details on Samsung's proprietary HDR specifications. Anyone know Joseph Rosensteel? He worked for Sony for around 10 years in compositing and lighting. Check out his resume and demo reel. I was surprised by this comment:
"Remember that “HDR” isn’t a standard, but the UHD Alliance’s HDR will be a standard. The Blu Ray Association will support “HDR” from a variety of sources, including Dolby Vision. Dolby is also a member of the UHD Alliance. So that is going well. I haven’t found any information on the technical differences, but sources familiar with the matter (that’s right, jerks! I have a source!) told me that the UHD Alliance is adopting Samsung’s SUHD as their draft, and the “HDR” that Fox is using." Later in the blog he states that UHD BR is backward compatible and will play on existing players. We all know that's wrong, so it makes me wonder if his comment about the UHD Alliance adopting Samsung's HDR is credible. http://joe-steel.com/2015-05-20-Bag-...amic-Hurt.html Last edited by raygendreau; 05-23-2015 at 03:50 PM. I wonder how big a deal HDR will become in the next 5 years?
I would think that the film would have to be fairly recent to take advantage of HDR? I mean, I certainly don't hope that old film will be remastered for HDR. That would create a situation similar to how black and white films were added colour in the nineties. |
