This panel discussion link was posted about two weeks ago in the 4K Release thread by Penton.
http://link.brightcove.com/services/...=4173329641001 Hanno Basse (Fox), Chairman of the UHD Alliance contributed a lot to the discussion. What I found most interesting were the comments about the need to educate the HE consumer on the fragmented offers potentially available with Ultra HD (UHD BR, + HDR, + WCG, + HFR, BD, DVD, digital etc.). Basse’s approach made the most sense: Give the consumer one choice with “everything on it”. I have read that the new UHD players will down convert the UHD BR based on the capability of connected HT devices, including mobile devices accessed through the Digital Bridge. So all the HE consumer will have to do is look for players and UHD BRs with the UHD Alliance Logo and they are set regardless of their equipment capability. There is still the question of how or if the content providers will monetize the various elements of UHD such as HDR (all panel members were most excited by HDR with WCG mentioned second) My guess is they won’t monitize at roll out, but will when/ if HE consumers attribute a high value to one or more of the elements. So, what would you be willing to pay for HDR or WCG or HFR or Digital Bridge based on your current knowledge of those features? |

It's still a true 4K source, enhanced compression & color. Our TV has enhanced dynamic range, even if it isn't true HDR. I'm still excited. |

Sony 55X9005B.
Pete, I'm rapidly losing interest, what can I say? I certainly won't be jumping straight in like I said I was gonna do, I'll be waiting for proper analyses of the downconversions from WCG and HDR. Yes, I know that it'll work at a basic level on my TV but it's got to be done accurately or I'm steering well clear. And I don't wanna pay inflated launch prices and have to jump through online authentication hoops for something that I can only glean the basic layer of playback from. (I don't mind authentication, as I've said before, but the trade-off is less appealing when I'm missing out on a lot of the quality improvements which are what's resulting in UHD BD being protected so zealously in the first place.) |

Here's something: https://www.productsandservices.bt.c...n_FURL_ultrahd
http://www.engadget.com/2015/06/09/b...ox-4k-channel/ 4K football from BT this autumn. It says the first Ultra HD match is in August, two months away. |

I have just checked the BDA'S website on this page http://us.blu-raydisc.com/index.php down in the bottom left corner there is an add for various Blu-ray's let the scroll past and eventually a link for Ultra HD Blu-ray appears, it doesn't seem to be clickable for me, can any body else get it to work?

New interview with Ron Martin of the BDA: http://www.insideci.co.uk/articles/i...and-ready.aspx
There's nothing too earth shattering in there for seasoned followers of these Tech forums, but it's good to hear the rationale for 4:2:0, no 4K 3D etc. |

However, outside of a lab and an engineer, who is really going to see the pro grade masters unless consumer product really improves? Even the theatrical DCP's are not the same grade. |

It's not about that. The 4:2:0 point is important to reiterate because of all the reams of bullshit on the internet about 4:4:4 4K60 support (or lack thereof) on a lot of 4K sets with the 10.2 Gb/s chipsets. Unless someone is a hardcore computer nut then it simply won't matter all that much, but people still treat it like the holy grail even if they don't know what it actually means and how it benefits them. Heck, even if UHD BD had adopted 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 then those older 4K TVs would still be fine reproducing that content @ 24p, which is of course the fps that the overwhelming majority of movies ever made were shot at.
You're right that DCP's aren't the same as the uncompressed masters, but they're still pretty darned tasty with their intraframe compression and 12-bit XYZ colour container. I don't think UHD BD is quite at that stage... |
