According to some articles, Sony's CES booth is all about 4K...4K blu-ray maybe.

March 2016 Sony is going to update the firmware on their 4K TVs to allow them to use a USB Hard Disk to DVR record TV programs.

What makes this possible?
1) Skype and Emergency alert require always on standby modes where the TV is tuned to a channel waiting on a Emergency alert and for Skype a Network connection. It's a simple matter to also support DVR.
2) Playready and Vidipath support properly handle flags and DRM.
3) Sony will have to provide Program Guides which they will charge a fee to do and this is likely also part of Vidipath and scheduled for March.
4) The US FCC no longer requires a cable card and allows Downloadable security which opens up the US to DVRs in TVs, PS4, XB1, PS3 and PCs with TEEs (Trusted Execution Environment) and additionally in the short term Network or USB tuners.

It'll be great if it actually performs well too and has good build quality. That's more important IMHO.

I'm glad Shout!'s in the UHD game, but those all look like documentaries. Great demo material, but I want movies and TV shows, damn it!

Looks like the bezel is made out of glass. So I can't say how good the build quality is but I am sure it performs well. Dolby vision hdr and exceeded uhd alliance standards. Can't wait to get myself one!

This Technicolor press release (previously posted in the LG OLED thread in the Display forum) implies that we may see content HDR graded to take advantage of black levels only attainable by OLED.:

"Looking ahead, LG and Technicolor intend to expand their alliance to:
•Optimize Technicolor’s video enhancement and HDR delivery technologies for inclusion in LG devices and displays.

•Ensure new LG OLED TVs meet the high quality standards of the creative content community and can serve as Technicolor’s consumer HDR reference model.

•Integrate LG OLED TVs into Technicolor’s post production facilities around the world, where premium movie makers and TV show producers create, view and approve content prior to distribution."

Great idea to have 70mm IMAX documentaries in 4K - not sure I'd pay for each one separately though. It would be better if they did a collection of them. Given their length, they could probably fit about 3 on each disc.

I suppose selling them separately makes more money though. And with 4K they need as much revenue as they can get to get the format up and running.

Could I ask what is possibly a stupid question?
I'm certainly not as technically minded as lots of people on this board.

I have a 4K TV I bought last summer, the Sony X85C (Here: http://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/te.../x8500c-series)

I did loads of research prior to purchasing, and am very happy with it, and took special note of the confirmation of HDR being patched in. I wanted to make sure I had the most compliant (without breaking the bank too much - I needed a new TV suddenly after my old one broke). I'm aware of a few of the shortcomings with the set.

I have been reading this thread and am confused about a few things (notably Dolby Vision), and simply want to know, will my TV be fine for the Ultra HD Blu-Ray and be able to take advantage of HDR? I know I'll need to get a new player (and hopefully a player with HDMI split to save upgrading my receiver for the time being).

Yes it's probably the format that will benefit the most from 4K: 15/70 film is actually almost 12K digital resolution... Still the biggest format ever....

I only caught the back end of it so to me it looks like they only announced a turntable and the Freezeray machine, how does that bowed well for Ultra HD Blu-ray?

Not a lot of detail during the live stream. They showed an image of the player with a prominent THX logo on the right side. Probably see more when CNET and others visit the booths tomorrow. Starting to show up in the blogs now:

"Panasonic also said it would release a 4K Ultra-High Definition Blu-Ray player in 2016 and the DX900 TV -- the first 4K set to meet the recently announced specifications laid down by the UHD Alliance, with further UK-specific announcements on television and Blu-Ray anticipated later this week."

http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/...1200-turntable

Even Wired spent more time on the turntable than the other featured products.

I just watched the TCL live stream from CNET. Nothing much. They also have a Dolby Vision display with Quantum Dots.

Both Crutchfield and Best Buy have the 2016 Samsung UHD BR player listed. March delivery?

Didn't see anything about the Digital Bridge in the specs. You may want to take a look. Under $400 on price. That is good news.
