I personally think it will be flogged more like a special feature. In other words we will rarely see a standalone release with just a 4K disk in its own distinctive packaging it will be bundled with a blu-ray in Blu-ray's packaging. As for studios I think they will all support unless there is a format war.

I would presume 4k movies will be released later compared to 2k movies in order to give theaters an incentive. To those with 4k tv's, does the automatic scaling of 2k to 4k generate any artifacts in movies or TV programs. Last edited by Trigen; 12-15-2014 at 03:41 AM. |

Thank you. That should cut down the number of blu rays I plan to replace with 4k then.

The only thing i fear is that if you want to see the uncut version of the film then buy the 4k disk that way they make more money . |

DVDs will become the next VHS in terms of "niche" releases as technology marches on. |

sd material should be released on blu-rays too. no more wrong frame rates with speed up/down, no more interlaced shit. uncompressed source, no wack-a** 9mbps mpeg2 transfer. i still have a few films only avaible on dvd and i hate the fact that it's on dvd because it's such a bad format. i would be happy if they just released those old dvd masters on blu-ray uncompressed and without interlacing and wrong framerate. oh and pls movie studios stop that dnr processing and sharpering bs on old transfers, i like grain. |

The movies that are currently available on DVD will continue to be available. Even if they go out of print, it won't be hard to get them. But if more people switched over to Blu-ray then there wouldn't continue to be so many releases that only come out on DVD.

Seriously? What's the reasoning behind this? Why even bother putting out a native 4k player then. Hell, why even bother putting out 4k displays period? So we can all watch crappy 4k Netflix or Youtube!!! This is getting to be ridiculous!

Well we barely even got any content when Blu-ray was actually launched in 2006. 50 First Dates, The Fifth Element, Hitch, House of Flying Daggers, Underworld: Evolution, xXx (all Sony), and MGM's The Terminator were the first wave of movies and they all used MPEG-2. The Fifth Element was pretty quickly discontinued and remastered considering how terrible it looked. So you could argue that even with the first Blu-ray player on the market there was barely even any content at first considering most of the Blu-ray discs were DVD 1.5. I think it took them a good while for them to actually get a good selection of worthwhile Blu-ray discs on the market to choose from. The first few months of Blu-ray discs were a little rough...let's be honest. Last edited by RedIsNotBlue; 12-17-2014 at 05:36 PM. |

I'd have no problem with that. If everything was only available as a combo pack then everything would be available on Blu-ray. As it stands now most people will still choose DVD over Blu-ray especially for everything but major blockbusters. This has caused various types of content to not be released on Blu-ray.

Overall though, I think I find them a bit more astute than CNET whose held the longtime editorial position (with their layman’s understanding of vision science and the business) that “4K TVs are stupid” to “Why 4K TVs are still stupid” to finally ![]() |

That's what slayed me about that AVF CES article and their apparent jonesing for 4K BD players having "repeatedly" told us that we would see them at CES 2015, when in actually their editorial staff really couldn't give a shit about 4K BD. It's all just click bits at this point as the various naysaying websites and media commentators grit their teeth and realise that - amazingly enough - this 4K malarkey might just be catching on! |

Personally I think what happened with DVD and then Blu-ray (old masters being repurposed for the new format, poor encodes etc) won't happen with 4K BD simply because they won't be able to cheat their way out of it; this shit will have to be genuine 4K right out of the gate - not 2K upscales or 4K 'conversions', that comes later - if 4K BD is to make an impact. And with the modern predisposition towards 2K finishes, the studios (apart from Sony) will need to look back at their biggest catalogue titles and franchises which were finished on film to make those all-important early headlines. I'd kill for a 4K release of the Indy trilogy, BTTF, the Alien movies, the original versions of the Star Wars movies, Titanic, the Reeve Superman movies, all of Chris Nolan's work with Warners, Kubrick's back catalogue etc. |
