TT doesn't do transfers, and I doubt Sony is going to spend more money to go back and create a new master with "fixed" color timing.

I know TT has zero to do with the transfers. As far as Sony goes maybe they might come to the conclusion that fixing the color timing on a title that will sell is better than releasing a new 4K transfer of something that won't.

Has anyone else other TT used the new blue version such as iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, Netflix, Crackle, cable, etc.? Last I saw, TT was the only one to use this new version.

When will the next signed promotion be? I really want to buy The Blue Max and Used Cars with a couple of other titles, but I might as well wait until the next signed promotion to meet the quota. It'll be the first time I'll be involved in the TT promotion.

I'm not sure. I know there were people on here saying that one of the streaming or download HD versions was non-tinted. I guess the only thing was that it was an older transfer so the detail wasn't as good, but it did lack the blue.

Even now I'm still not completely sure about it, a visual feast and brilliant music score but some reviews say the plot is somewhat silly. Guess I'll find out next week when it comes
You made an excellent choice. The Blue Max is a gritty and thrilling film with real flying and stunts .....no fake looking computer game CGI which seems to be the norm today in many war films. The plot is far from silly. It tells the story of the rise to prominence of a former infantryman turned pilot in his relentless quest to achieve the highest medal available in the kaiser's forces. Because he is a commoner and a former trench soldier, he has none of the chivalric or gentlemanly sensibilities of his aristocratic squadron mates. This makes him an outsider in their blue-blooded circle, and the story uses this character arc as a commentary on class difference and Prussian values in the German Empire. It also makes him an appealing figure for German propaganda that seeks to use him as an example of the model working-class hero in order to promote continued support among the German people at a time when it is increasingly obvious the Germans are worn down and losing the war.

The film shows us that George Peppard's character, by rising from the ranks of the commoners and becoming a hardened killer with no illusions of gentlemanly conduct, is the kind of New German Man who would one day give rise to post-war Nazism. However, it becomes clear as the story unfolds there is a darker side to the Peppard character. The German Empire may be promoting him as a symbol of a united classless sacrifice but Peppard is also using his image to advance his own personal agenda no matter the cost to those around him.

The Blue Max is stunning in its aerial footage, well-acted, a study in hubris and the human condition, filled with insightful commentary on a changing German social order brought on by the war, and one of that group of great films from the 1960s that transcends its genre. It is a must see release from TT.

If Sony does a new 4k scan of any movie I hope it's The 7th Voyage of Sinbad and they give it to TT.

Even if one were okay with somebody buying up a spare copy to resell, it is kinda sleazy for someone to buy up all the remaining stock to scalp. I know it's an old argument and one that's often brought up on this thread because of the TT limited model, but I just think it's an unfair and unscrupulous thing to do.

As for the question as to why people wait until the last minute to buy these things, not everyone keeps on top of the numbers diligently, and maybe they're not quite aware of how low the stock is getting. At $30 a pop, maybe they just can't afford to get them right away. Who knows.

The last signed promo was on April 22nd. My best guess is that the next signed promo will be in about two weeks from now on the 20th.

A while ago I asked on TT's FB page if they'd ever considered branching out into releasing classic television shows on blu-ray. TT said they were considering it, but were busy with so many movies at the moment they weren't sure if it would ever happen. I'd like to see it happen. CBS, for instance, has made new high definition masters of some shows that they seem to have no plans to release even on DVD. For instance, the classic late 1960s Western "The High Chaparral" is now in HD according to the CBS syndication bible:

http://syndicationbible.cbstvd.com/s...s_contents.htm

This particular show is considered by some to be one of the best TV Westerns ever made. I've only seen fragments of it, but someone I know who watched it as a kid says it's very good. And it has a whole fan site devoted to it:

http://www.thehighchaparral.com/

Probably for some reason or other that's not realistic, but in terms of the general idea, I hope TT will at least consider the idea of releasing some classic TV on blu....

It would be interesting to see what they'd charge for a 4 or 5 disc season set!

In the highly unlikely event something like this happens, I'm hoping c. $150 for a complete series set of, in the case of "The High Chaparral," 4 seasons. For that series, the whole show of 98 episodes would probably need a dozen or so discs, if they filled them with c. 8 episodes per disc.

I've not much interest in most old TV series, but I'd like to see some of the classic made for TV movies and teleplays released on blu, starting with the 1966 version of Death of a Salesman with Lee J. Cobb and Mildred Dunnock. Cobb is the original, and best, Willy Loman.

I hear what you're saying but I respectfully disagree. I don't like the practice but if TT doesn't limit the number of copies people can buy then they are free to buy whatever quantity they want. I'd probably feel differently if the title had just been released and everyone didn't have the opportunity to purchase it but that's just not true in this case. The best course of action is if you really want a bd just get it early on so to avoid those who are willing to clear out the title in order to scalp them.

There are a number of old TV series that I'd like to see on blu-ray, but not many I could see Twilight Time doing. The two I would pay anything for would be (both from the 60s) The Naked City and The Defenders.

It's an excellent series, though the few comedy episodes are usually substandard and the series does soften its initially much tougher approach quite substantially towards the end of the first season. They're rerunning non-HD versions in the UK at the moment and it's surprising how well they've held up, with some episodes (like the one with Jack Kelly) standouts. And the show is a favourite of Twilight Time's Brian Jamieson, but it would all depend on licensing from CBS (or possibly StudioCanal, who released it on DVD in Germany) and how the numbers added up.

The problem I have with the BLUE MAX is that all the major characters played by George Peppard, James Mason and Ursula Andress are slime balls. There's hardly anyone to root for in the movie.

The biplane fighters in the movie were also used in DARLING LILI and a few other WW I movies. If I'm not mistaken, Peter Jackson owns one of the still-flying Pfalz DIII fighters and the scarf worn by Manfred von Richthofen when he was shot down.

Most of the aerial footage and fighters in FLYBOYS are obviously CGI.

Thank you, I feel better after reading your review. It was Leonard Maltin who referred to the plot as "a silly drama", maybe he was just cranky that day

Or it wasn't him. Was his comment one that you'd seen him give on TV, or read in his Movie Guide. If the latter, an awful lot of the reviews (probably most, at this point) are written by staff rather than Maltin himself.

The Leonard Maltin Video Guide is a good resource for information, but some of the "reviews" are straight up garbage (Taxi Driver!!!). It is correct though that there are many reviews in the book Maltin did not write.
