I looked around on some of the Star Wars, Code Red, and poll threads. My previous comments about respect and civility must have made me seem like some naive hayseed. At least I know some of the threads to avoid, so thanks for the warnings!

I got an order in with SAE for the Twilight Time sale. I might order more later.

Got Bound for Glory. Oscar-nominated Hal Ashby classic from one of the best cinematic years of the 70s.

The Code Red thread is kind of hilarious though. I haven't spent much time there but I haven't seen anything particularly nasty. It's just like a rowdy roadhouse bar where the owner of said bar is kind of insane and all of the customers try to be as crazy as the owner and everyone has a fun time, but if you're just some guy off the street looking for a quiet drink it's not the place to be.

It wasn't just nominated, it actually won two Oscars including Best Cinematography for the great Haskell Wexler and it was one of the first, maybe even the first, movie to use the steadicam.

Oh, I see, you were talking about Best Picture only. So you don't refer to Harry And The Hendersons as an "Oscar winning classic" like I do?

It was the same way when I used to post in IMDB, you would just avoid those threads altogether and it was those threads that were largely to blame for IMDB deciding to end their forums.

I've noticed since I started posting here (after being a longtime lurker) that the "blu-ray" threads are by and large pretty respectful, but the "movie" threads are a little more disrespectful. But if you get people in the right mood though, they'll argue about anything.

Yeah, those imdb boards got pretty awful their last few years of existence. I used to avoid the Nolan/Batman, Star Wars, et. al. types of threads, and never once went in there starting any arguments. But, it also got to where those people also branched out, LOL, and suddenly you'd be in a "Tree of Life" or Lars von Trier or "Silence" thread, and there they'd come, guns drawn, LOL. Thread after thread accusing fans/admirers of being 'pretentious douches', who didn't really like or understand that pretentious stuff, but just pretended to understand it or like it, so we could feel smarter than the rest of them. My point always was, YES, I really, really truly DID like and understand that stuff, but NO, didn't think I was smarter than them. We just had different tastes. They weren't having it. Nolan was God and Malick, Scorsese, Fellini, etc., were pretentious, overrated 'hacks'. 'Not opinion. FACT.' , they'd proclaim. It's funny how they always used the term 'pretentious' without ever really understanding the irony of THEM making that accusation....

I just picked up the following titles from the sale...

The Boston Strangler
Eureka
Support Your Local Sheriff/Support Your Local Gunfighter

$14.95 per title pulled me over the fence with these three, although I'm trying to be more judicious with regard to blind buys nowadays.

Not that I posted much in the last few years anyway because I was so put off by a lot of the negativity, but I found that sticking to old school movies from the 50s like Gene Kelly musicals or more genre related product from the 70s like Burt Reynolds movies I was able to generally avoid the crap because that seemed to be so off their radar.

These movies are really really fun, especially whichever one has Bruce Dern. I caught one of them on cable last year, and then the next month the other one was on. So I bought this disc the next time it went on sale.

Especially when the award should have gone to Star Trek Beyond.

It's always nice to have a heads-up on where to avoid. But don't let that discourage you: on the flip side, there are quite a few really good threads here (including this one), with quite a few intelligent posters and comments. From a personal standpoint, I've considered myself a film buff since the age of 7, and still, I've learned quite a bit about film since joining here (especially movies pre-1970 as well as foreign). As a result, I've blind-bought films that I never would've given the time of day to had it not been for this site, and for that, I'm very grateful.

I'd imagine sooner as opposed to later, you'll figure out the threads you enjoy visiting more, and the posters you enjoy chatting with, and, of course, the ones to avoid as well. Enjoy!

The Nolan fans who torpedoed the IMDB boards were all seemingly teens and college kids who hadn't seen that many films and therefore thought Nolan was the greatest filmmaker of all-time and "Inception" was one of the greatest films of all-time. The rating "Inception" has on IMDB is so laughable it's not even worth talking about.

I think we can all think back to a time when we were 18 or 19 year old shitheads, finally gaining a little knowledge, strident in our opinions, unaccepting of differing opinions, and passing our opinions off as absolute facts. Except the Nolan fanboys took those young shithead qualities and ratcheted them to never-before-seen levels. As dkelly mentioned in his post, it was always stuff like, "I saw '8 1/2, didn't get it, way too pretentious. You guys are a bunch pretentious d-bags who like to sniff your own farts, Nolan is GOD and Tarantino is a close second. Also, LOVE Fincher."
