Couldn't they wait until there's fewer titles at SAE at least?

I'm on the fence about snagging Whirlpool at SAE. Reviews seem mixed, both of PQ and the underlying merits of the film itself, despite its illustrious director and female lead. Is it worth it at circa 20 bucks?

Thank you for the update...grabbed my final 3 TT titles: My Cousin Rachel, Hour of the Gun and Auto Focus.

While I'll miss TT as a label, I surely won't miss paying these absurd, extortionist shipping fees.

Whirlpool was the last film I saw. I watched it last weekend for the first time. I, too, had some reservations about the film beforehand and that was probably based on what I was hearing/reading. ...and I don't want to say it too loudly here, but Gene Tierney to me is just okay. (no tomatoes, please )

Happy to report back, though, that it exceeded the expectations I had for it. It had a similar feel to some of Preminger's other noirs. No, it isn't as good as Laura or Where The Sidewalk Ends. The story is kind of preposterous, but it was fun and the villain, in particular, was a fun character.

My personal idea of (or preference for) a late night noir would probably be something like the 3 Preminger films I'm discussing here. I prefer these types of noir to the ones with the fancy, but unrealistic dialogue, the edgy dudes, and trouble making "dames."

I'd recommend it. My score for it was 7/10.

I picked up Melvin and Howard and Hour of the Gun.

Anyone else use the Britain's Radio Times website to get an idea about a film?

https://www.radiotimes.com/

(Just use the search)

You know, when I first saw Whirlpool some 40 years ago, I didn't especially care for it. That's a huge admission from a life-long Gene Tierney fan. The plot seemed like melodramatic claptrap, and I didn't especially like the performances: Jose Ferrer went way over the top; Richard Conte was blander than vanilla; even Gene seemed not at the top of her game.

Watching it again a decade later, I found it to be better than I had remembered because my sensibilities had changed. The story still seemed absurd (and I still thought Jose Ferrer was a little much), but I stopped watching the film as a noir murder mystery, and started looking at it as an examination (criticism?) of American postwar values. That change of perspective increased my enjoyment of the film immeasurably.

In the years since, I've re-watched Whirlpool many times, and now I think that it's a really good film, with a lot of interesting things to say about marriage and the role of women in society. In that sense, it was ahead of its time. Jose Ferrer's performance still strikes me as hammy, but I have new respect for Tierney and Conte, especially the former.

I would tell you to go for it, knowing that if you dislike it, you can probably resell it or trade it in the future when the title inevitably goes OOP.

Good grief! When I checked this afternoon, there were 48 copies of Alexander the Great left, and at least 50 copies of Dragonwyck! How do YOU spell "scalpers"?

Short Night Of Glass Dolls is down to 29 remaining until it is sold out .

Two For The Road
Model Shop &
The Fortune Cookie

All have sold many units in the last day and they all have more than 50 of but very low quantities now . Likely most all will be among the handful of the titles that will sell out next .

I have all 3 of so I do not need any of . If anyone is interested all 3 are great films .

On Thursday I got the most recent order I made from SAE after I learned that they still had copies of Mr Hobbs Takes a Vacation. I've seen the film plenty of times on TV, but it is nice to have on blu-ray. One joke I didn't get before is I think it's Maureen O'Hara who says the run down beach house she has rented for the family looks like something out of Dragonwyck.

Thanks for sharing that tidbit about the Dragonwyck reference! I own, but haven't yet watched Mr. Hobbs, so now I have something fun to look forward to. Much obliged!

I actually only finally watched Dragonwyck last night. I must have glossed over reading other's comments about the disc, because it was a wonderful surprise to find 2 episodes of the old show A&E's Biography. I used to watch this all the time back in the early 90's. I know a few of the DVDs of 20th Century Fox classics feature these, I'd have to look through my collection for which titles, but I know I've watched ones in the last few months on Tyrone Power, Don Ameche, & Alice Faye.
I only watched the one on Tierney last night, & saved the Vincent Price one for another time. How fortunate for us now that this was done at a time when so many people were still alive. I especially enjoyed seeing Oleg Cassini's interview segments - such a player even in his old age, & totally unapologetic about his marital affairs! 100% a scumbag.
I have seen the "hits" from Tierney's career, & I don't think Dragonwyck matches those - I actually enjoyed Whirlpool more. But, I still have a quite a few of her films, mostly on dvd, in my "to be watched pile."
Regarding A&E's Biography, I wonder if there is a list anywhere of discs - either blu-ray or dvd - with episodes as special features.

I just watched it now, very happy I decided to buy the TT release.
It is definitely a quirky movie but I don't think there's a bad performance and nobody overstays their welcome (although I think the fog section is quite long).
As always, love the cinemascope photography of this era.
Let us know what you think of it.

That's a great movie. Never saw it until I bought the Twilight Time disc. It was nice to see a later Jimmy Stewart movie that wasn't a western (even thought I like his westerns).
