Yeah - and we just hit a reason that I am dead-set against such a thing: there is a film I wanted to see. I just looked, and renting it on Amazon - one viewing/24 hours - was $3.99. It was available to buy on Blu-ray for $9.99. Why on EARTH would I rent something for not-quite 1/2 what I could buy it for if there's a chance I might want to see it even TWICE more in my lifetime? [And, if I don't like it, I can sell it or give it to/trade it with a friend.]

It, frankly, ticks me off that so many people don't seem to have a problem with $3.99 one-day rentals for streaming a movie, when - at my local video store - it is still only $2.50 to rent a new release. Four dollars for a single rental when a month of Netflix is just barely twice that? When a theater ticket is maybe three times that (where the studios and distributors actually have some expenses to incur)? It is outrageous.

Do you have to 're-pay' to read a book a second or third time? Other intellectual property is governed by different rules than what the movie studios want for themselves. It is nothing but greed.

+1. I can't stand this streaming stuff. Day of the Jackal is one of my all time fave films. Its only disc release was a poor quality non-anamorphic DVD from 1998. I-tunes have it on hi-def to purchase which I did. It looks great but if I want to watch it I have to plan ahead because it takes about 4 hours for the whole thing to download to my apple TV whenever I want to watch it. And then who knows if something ever goes wrong with my itunes account, I might lose that $14.99 purchase, whereas if it was on a blu ray I could just pop it in my the machine whenever I want with no worries.

Is it just me or does the forums review screenshots of Major Dundee show quite a bit of ringing? I would like to order it but ringing is a huge turnoff.

Thanks,
Tom

The blu-ray.com review acknowledges the presence of ringing in some scenes, but qualifies this with recognition that the PQ is magnitudes above the old pan-and-scan DVD. I am not sure I even know what ringing is, much less what it looks like in a screenshot. All I know is what I see when this plays on my plasma, and what I see is glorious, very film-like, with natural colors and grain structure intact. There are patches where the PQ falls off somewhat, most noteably during opticals and transitions, which is common for many films of this era. In motion - that is, not in isolated screenshots - the PQ looks great to me. It is not a perfect picture, but the film was always a bit rough to look at, and I see nothing that would prevent me from recommending it to anyone.

Looking ahead a bit, I see there aren't any titles listed on the front page for December. Is that because there are none or because they haven't been announced?

If you have an external hard drive you can move around easily, you could download the film to that, and then attach the hard drive to your Apple TV when you want to see it. [Flash drives apparently have an upper limit of 4GB for a file, hard drives don't. The only film I've bought from iTunes (because no Blu was available for it, and likely never will be) I did that with because it was 4.5GB in size, and it works fine... I actually use the USB input for my Blu-ray player for the hard drive's output.]

Ringing is the same thing as edge enhancement. It's a halo around objects that gives the image an over sharpened video look. Just look at the screenshots from the review. There is a strong halo around the hats the guys are wearing. You may not have noticed on your flat panel tv but when viewed on an 8 ft wide scope projection setup from 1x screen width. it's going to be very noticeable. Most reviewers use flat panels that don't really translate to what the image looks like on a projector.

It isn't edge enhancement Tom, or any kind of digital tinkering. Those caps have been selected from the few optical/dupe sections of the film, and they've always looked like that. Most transitions and the few seconds following look like this:

The rest of the film looks perfect. If it really bothers you, watch the theatrical version which has fewer and shorter dupe moments.

Only if they are FAT32 formatted. A format like exFAT or NTFS won't have that limit on a storage device. Most Flash Drives are preformatted for FAT32 so you have to reformat them.

Thanks for the knowledge.

It only bothers me when it is edge enhancement. So may catalog titles have EE so I was concerned paying $35+ for an over sharpened image.

I will now gladly place my order.

Tom

I agree. I have only watched the theatrical version and it looks good. Nice colors, blacks, and detail. Some appearance of artificial sharpening does appear in the intro scene with Dundee and the scout in their horses (as visible in the daylight), but your explanation makes sense.

Major Dundee looks great, and preaty natural (film) looking for the most part. If you are a fan you should get it. I understand the reservations though because I had the same ones before deciding to get it, but there's nothing to worry about.
