A week ago, I go received My copies of Desiree and the Big Heat. Desiree had its own magnet and I got one like above. I thought that I had missed out on the first 1,000 of the big heat so they threw in some free advertising magnet. Not the same, but its free.

I finally watched As Good as it Gets last night. I thought I had seen this on DVD years ago, and recalled liking it, but as I watched the blu-ray I realized I had never seen it before. What a great movie! Really glad I ordered this one. Very well written and acted.
I can't recall seeing any rom-com genre films made in the last few years that compare to the quality of these older movies. Bell, Book, and Candle and As Good as it Gets are two excellent examples. They definitely don't make 'em like they used to. |

Ah yes...I remember the good ole days back in 1997. I look fondly on those days gone by when The Simpsons had only been on the air for eight years. We'd tune in the late night TV shows and see guys like Jay Leno and David Letterman (anybody remember them?). Who can forget those long gone, golden age stars like Jack Nicholson, Greg Kinnear, Helen Hunt and Cuba Gooding Jr.? Yes my friends, we will not see their kind again. |

Which is as good a lead-in as any to my enthusiastic endorsement of High Time. Admittedly a bit of a stretch in terms of 'rom-com', but this movie does offer many venerable genre elements, including an utterly charming romantic lead, Nicole Maurey, whom I couldn't remember from anything else except The Day of the Triffids (1962). High Time wasn't a PQ and AQ jaw-dropper like Bye-Bye Birdie, though pretty darn good on the whole, but I have to say I actually enjoyed it more than Birdie as a moo-vie. For me, this was a Bing Crosby picture I'd never seen...a Blake Edwards picture I'd never seen...a Fox 'Scope picture I'd never seen...and a Henry Mancini score I'd never heard. And by the way, what a score...I think Mancini's infectious High Time 'march' is now permanently imprinted on my brain cells. In fact, I'm listening to the isolated score as I write this. What an all-round delight! Not falling on the floor funny, although Edwards did manage to work-in some nifty sight gags, especially during his clever montages and scene transitions. High Time was just a charming, breezy 'feel good' movie with a very attractive soul...I loved its gently sassy, retro-cool 'vibe'. But that music! I...can't...get...that...damn...tune...out...of... my...head! Last edited by ROclockCK; 08-24-2012 at 08:18 PM. |

At least if you've already seen this movie on TV, you know generally what to expect. For me, High Time was a totally blind buy, but I couldn't be happier the way it turned out. I still can't believe Fox never released this thing on DVD*...core Crosby, Edwards, and Mancini fans must be thrilled that it is finally available on home video. * ...or Der Bingle's other picture from the same era Say One For Me, which I did see panned and scanned in B&W on network TV back in the 60s. I wasn't sure about High Time and was considering picking it up on DVD first, but after realising it was indeed never released on the format, and after reading ROclockCKs review, I think I might go for it during my next round of SAE purchases. Thanks for the write up!
I was wondering if you've gone Region Free and imported the 'Scope classic Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter from Masters of Cinema? It seems to fit the bill for a TT release. The Region B edition is a great package, with a fab 50 page booklet |

Besides, for fans, this movie was practically a 'test tube' for Blake Edwards and Henry Mancini's 60s screen comedy...especially their creative collaboration on the Pink Panther series. You can see the genesis for that style all over this thing... Quote:
As for MOC, they've done some wonderful titles, and clearly done so with quality and care, but I just can't shake the notion that there will be a future for most of this stuff in Region A...and Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? is actually a perfect example of that. I mean, even if Fox doesn't release it themselves (after all, it was part of their premier "Cinema Classics" special edition DVD series), then you're right, it would be a perfect fit for a high-end collector licensee like Twilight Time. At this point, it could go either way, but I'm still betting that we will see WSSRH available on Blu-ray domestically within a year, two tops. It's not like I expect to see the same flood of catalogue titles we had with DVD, but the situation is no longer quite as grim as it was this time last year. Sure, the economics of mass retail will still stymie release of most deep catalogue titles on Blu-ray, but the cottage licensees seem to be picking up the slack dandily in that regard. Heck, later this year, folks will get to choose from not 1, but 2 versions of The Rains of Ranchipur (Twilight Time and Fox Germany)...which is amazing for a title that never even had a DVD release! Add to that The Sound and the Fury, Beloved Infidel, and Bonjour Tristesse, just from TT, not counting Olive, Criterion, Kino, and Eureka!, and I have plenty of fine deep catalogue viewing to look forward to well into next year. So I'm still on the fence about investing in an All-Region player, but with every passing month of catalogue announcements, am seeing less and less reason for it. ![]() Someone at SAE must have recently found a stash. Neither of my Big Heat orders in June or July included a magnet. |

And enough about the damn magnets! Who cares, my TT's are peeling already. You can buy much better film poster magnets from Ebay. |

I hear ya. I just thought it was amusing that rafaelsalguero was still able to get one with The Big Heat so late into its run. FTR, none of my SAE/TT magnets have peeled, but then again, I don't even attempt to display or use them...they go straight from the mailer into the case tucked underneath the insert booklet.
