I just finished watching my Twilight Time Blu-ray of Chato's Land.

Chato's Land is the perfect weekend afternoon flick, complete with beautiful western landscapes, fast-paced adventure, underrated actors, and just enough cerebral fodder to keep one alert. Charles Bronson excels in the taciturn title role as a half-Apache who kills a lawman in self-defense, and then flees to the rocky desert territory where he is most at home. Captain Quincy Whitmore, played by a superb Jack Palance, gathers a posse to track Chato down. The interactions amongst the members of the posse, which includes Richard Jordan (Logan's Run, The Hunt for Red October, Dune, The Friends of Eddie Coyle), Simon Oakland (Psycho, Bullitt), James Whitmore (Them!, The Shawshank Redemption, Planet of the Apes, The Asphalt Jungle), and Ralph Waite (Cool Hand Luke), make for the most fascinating moments, as they turn against each other when they realize that Chato's land is a land that is truly inhospitable to them.

This movie functions both as a commentary on racism, and an allegory for America's involvement in Vietnam, where soldiers who had the advantage of superior firepower and superior numbers were beset by a harsh landscape that turned them into their own worst enemies. This is also the first of many movies where director Michael Winner and Charles Bronson worked together, with the subsequent films being The Mechanic, The Stone Killer, Death Wish, Death Wish II, and Death Wish 3.

This Twilight Time Blu-ray looks impressive, although I doubt that anyone will use it as a demo disc, and the presentation gets the goods across in conveying the dark adventure vibe of the film. The screenwriter interview is a great extra feature.

This Blu-ray has the uncut version of the movie.

I'm really glad that I pulled the trigger on this disc, because Chato's Land is a movie that I'll return to quite a few times in the future. Well done, Twilight Time!

Thanks, guessing it's been about 40 years since I've seen this. Don't remember a lot, but I do remember Martha Hyer at 42 still managed to get my teenage hormones working.

Oh, she's one of the best.

You can also see Martha Hyer in Cry Vengeance, Sabrina, House of 1,000 Dolls, and The Night of the Grizzly, all of which are available on Blu-ray right now.

I still need to buy the Twilight Time Blu-ray of The Best of Everything, which stars Hyer.

Oh...wait...

There's a sale now at Twilight Time.

As far as Support Your Local _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ goes, they're far from spectacular. Don't get me wrong, I'm still glad to have the films on Blu-ray and have no regrets in purchasing the double feature. See the reviews on this very website which are spot-on.

After reading the great things about First Men in the Moon I have placed my order through Screen Archives. Sale price or no. If TT manages to get it back in stock in time for the sale this week I may cancel my order and go through them instead. I would like to, but I don't know. They say Hawaii should be back in stock early this week and that's another I would like to grab too.

Does SAE issue warnings on low-stock blus like TT? I've missed out on my share of great titles because of my procrastination.

I'd seen clips of it before, but never the whole thing. There are a lot of great numbers, including the title song by Lena Horne, Fats Waller singing "Ain't Misbehavin'", and Cab Calloway, but the highlight is the Nicholas Brothers. No wonder they are the last number in the film -- there was no way to top that performance. Amazing!

For anyone interested in learning more about the Nicholas Brothers, there is this A&E documentary from the several years back.

Just finished watching this. IMO, the Nicholas Brothers performance alone is worth the price of the disc, but the rest of the movie's quite terrific, too. Just one great number after another. Extremely high re-watch value as far as I'm concerned.

In short, I'm so glad I blind-bought this.

Why not just look in here, and check Oildude's initial post occasionally ?

No REAL spoilers, but if you look at FMITM in the right light it's
[Show spoiler]a tragic horror story in which the villain prevails while the hero perishes in the ruins of his shattered dream.

So were there titles that Twilight Time had on sale at their site that are not on there at the moment because they sold out of their site's stock, and are they going to get more in before the sale ends Friday?

Even if they could get more copies, I don't know that Twilight Time would re-list it on sale as it's a low quantity title and they could more easily sell it at the $30 price.

Ordered mine on April 9th and it has yet to reach me as the postal service is sending it on a rather circuitous route through and around the US. A little annoying.
