With all of the talk about westerns, I've decided that July is going to be "Western Month" for me, since I've got a ton of westerns in my still-unwatched Blu-ray stack.

Garden of Evil
Cowboy
Cat Ballou
Flaming Star
Broken Lance
Johnny Guitar
Man of the West
The Ox-Bow Incident
Yellow Sky
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
El Dorado
Fort Apache

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (I've seen it before, but not in high definition.)
The Wild Bunch (I've seen it before, but not in high definition.)
The Horse Soldiers
Hang 'Em High
The Professionals
Day of Anger
Requiescant
Cemetery Without Crosses

The Long Riders (I've seen it before, but not in high definition.)
The Grand Duel/Keoma
The Shooting/Ride in the Whirlwind
More Dead than Alive
True Grit
(1969) (I've seen it before, but not in high definition.)

I may not be able to watch all of these in July, but you'd better believe that I plan to make a dent in the stack.

Winchester '73 is a must, as is Jubal (of the two Delmer Daves/Glenn Ford westerns that Criterion released, I prefer it to 3:10 to Yuma). And, yes, from the 40s, The Westerner, as well as Ford's My Darling Clementine. And from the 30s, Stagecoach and Destry Rides Again.

It's a little bit flat in the plot department, but has a lot of good material in it.

Radio Days is funny. While there are some scenes that are laugh-out-loud funny, mostly it's the kind of movie that puts a smile on my face from beginning to end. True, there's no central plot, but there are several story lines which keep the narrative moving forward. It's probably Woody Allen's warmest movie. For me, it has high rewatch value and I would rank it in his top three just behind Annie Hall and Hannah and Her Sisters.

Trivia: it was just a few years ago that I found out that the young Woody Allen character in the movie was played by ten year-old Seth Green. He showed his comedic talent even then.

Yeah, I'll be walking around bow-legged by the end of July, I'm sure.

Blu-ray.com says that the Film Noir and Western genres are "strongly overrepresented" in my collection.

I disagree. There's no such thing as being overrepresented in those genres.

I love westerns. I still am way behind on seeing a majority of them. I remember watching an entire day of John Wayne westerns on AMC. My favorite from the bunch was The Cowboys. I wanted to be apart of that group of kids. Riding down and being apart of an adventure. Is there a western thread?

I agree with most of what you said, except I'd rate it lower in his catalog. What you say about it being funny without being laugh out loud funny is what I was clumsily trying to say with "it's fun but not funny." It's definitely a warm movie (I think Hannah... and Manhattan Murder Mystery are also very warm, though...not sure if this is more so).

There are a few of them. They tend to die quick deaths, I dunno if it's just that the thread creators quickly lose interest or that only horror has a huge and rabid fanbase that will keep bumping things.

I've never seen the theatrical cut but considering it was butchered, it's a write off for me. I waver between the other two versions, but I tend to lean towards the 2005 version simply because I think reducing Knocking on Heaven's Door to an instrumental in the 1988 TCM cut is a mistake. The film is a bit of a mess for sure, the plot's all over the place (Slim Pickens is introduced in one scene, then almost immediately we are meant to be lamenting his imminent death) but it's the late 60s-early 70s anti-establishment feel of the film is what draws me to it and James Coburn always has and always will be one of the coolest cats in film history.

I don't know how to make a thread, but it would be great to have an all encompassing thread of western films from the early days of cinema till the present.

I found Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid to be very boring...and that's crazy because it should be a great story. Major Dundee and Wild Bunch are solid and I like The Ballad of Cable Hogue.

You press the "new thread" button? :P It is a lot of work if you want to maintain it and have the OP have a ton of good info though.

Honestly, I would just post in one of those earlier threads. You can start a new thread and put a lot of work into it and unless people go there constantly and bump it, it'll vanish quickly.

The Westerner is great and further proof, along with The Big Country, that William Wyler was a master of all genres.

Speaking of great directors of westerns, Raoul Walsh needs to be included in the discussion. This is not a complete list:
The Big Trail (1930)
Dark Command (1940)
They Died with Their Boots On (1941)
Pursued (1947)
Cheyenne (1947)
Silver River (1948)
Colorado Territory (1949)
The Lawless Breed (1953)
Saskatchewan (1954)
The Tall Men (1955)
Finally, I'd like to mention some great "modern" Westerns, movies that take place in the age of the automobile, but featuring western themes, he-men and horses:
The Lusty Men (1952)
The Misfits (1961)
Lonely Are the Brave (1962)
Junior Bonner (1972)
When The Legends Die (1972)
And we haven't even touched on the hybrid genres such as western/comedy, western/musical or western/horror. There's a lot of great stuff out there.

As far as western horror goes, I'm a big fan of Bone Tomahawk, which was released last year.

There are also quite a few good "western noir" movies out there.

Coincidentally, the AV Club just did a short write-up on Major Dundee today.

What are the odds that TT will be releasing Candyman? A post or two recently on their FB seems to kinda sorta suggest they're going after it.
