Even in the genres I know intimately, buying movies sight unseen has been a wasteful gamble much of the time. Sure, occasionally you'll stumble into a personal favorite that way depending on the talent involved or the movie itself. I simply wait around now most of the time for a feature to show up somewhere on cable or another cheap venue to get a taste of a movie's quality. You would be surprised at what shows up if you are persistent and follow the DVR guides.

Buying blind at prices over $20 is something I've gone away from over the years.

Yes, but as others have said, that same logic means there would never be any reason to go to a movie theater either. If that is the case, fine. Otherwise, it makes perfect sense to blind buy movies, especially when a good price can be had for them on the secondary market if you are inclined to do such. There is no recouping anything from a bad movie experience in a theater.

Question---

I bought Enemy Mine with my credit card, they charged my account, and now the charge is completely gone and money is back in my account!

Has anyone experienced this with their Twilight time pre-orders??

Yes, that's completely normal. It was only a temp charge and you'll be charged once the item ships.

THE WAYWARD BUS arrived today. Ah...not the actual bus...I mean the Blu-ray.

It was a blind buy but I was attracted by the list of performers that I knew so well from other roles. I may be one of the only people that first knew Dan Dailey as the star of the TV show THE GOVERNOR AND J.J. (I was about 11 years old). It was years later that I realized he'd been in the movies. I remember Rick Jason from the TV show COMBAT! Of course, Joan Collins has been in just about everything. I especially wanted to see Jayne Mansfield doing real drama. She was good...I mean REAL good. This was completely unlike any Jayne Mansfield performance I've ever seen.

Hey, I even recognized the Bell 47 helicopter N141B...A popular Hollywood "star" of the era, having appeared in several movies and TV shows. It still exists (I can't help it...I'm a helicopter geek).

It's one of those "slice of life" films. It's not so much of the standard three act play. It's more about the journey than the destination. I imagine the commentary track for this one should be interesting. As a movie collector with a special fondness for oddities, I'm happy to own this. It's an unconventional and rarely seen movie which fits my collection perfectly.

Just put in my order for the last 8 titles released (including NOTLD and EM). This brings my collection back to every single title so far. So far i've enjoyed every one of them to some extent, my least favourite being AGAIG, which is still an enjoyable but slight film experience.

Bring it on TT! Loving what you do!

Or unless you pay with your PayPal card like I did (and don't keep any actual funds in your account and have it set to pull from your bank account when you use it), in which case you don't have to worry about it until it's ready to ship out because PayPal can't "hold" funds you don't have available and doesn't actually charge your backup source until the transaction actually pushes through, so the pre-auth just sort of sits in internet purgatory.

Well, it's a doozy Dex...one of the most 'candid' disc commentaries I've ever heard. Admittedly, I do not routinely indulge in that feature because I can't stand being told how to watch a movie, but in the case of The Wayward Bus, it was almost essential backstory for this sometimes chaotic production...just fascinating stuff.

I think your favourable reaction to The Wayward Bus actually puts you in the best frame of mind for The Sound and the Fury...another oddball Adler-era 'Scope adaptation of classic American literature. Although I was prepared to at least like TSATF because of my familiarity with North's magnificent score, what I wasn't expecting was how well it played as a mooovie. Of course, literary purists will detest its Faulknerian liberties, and you really do have to acclimatize yourself to the exceptionally weird casting*, but once you get over those twin aesthetic hurdles, it's an immensely rewarding piece of filmmaking. I was engrossed...its 2 hour running time just flew by.

You can practically smell the rotting wood...and that's a compliment.

* As in, "What...were...they...thinking?"

Interesting comments. Glad to read this after some of the lukewarm critical reactions to the film that have been around for awhile! I'm devoting this weekend to watching four of the recent Olive Films classic noir and western releases, and next weekend I'm out of town, but the following weekend will definitely be the time to watch THE SOUND AND THE FURY, which I've never seen, as second feature on a double-bill with a revisiting of THE WAYWARD BUS, which I liked quite a bit. Love that classic CinemaScope on my 10-foot screen!

So I put my order in for those 8 titles and the total came to $260-ish, but the hold on my card was only $150. Any idea why this is?

Of the two, I suspect The Wayward Bus will look best at that scale Blu Velvet. On my considerably smaller Bravia XBR, its black and white really sizzled. Except for some so-so model work, this was a beautifully shot picture...of particular note, Joan Collins' monologue scenes in the diner.

On the the other hand, although The Sound and the Fury looked decent enough for the era, it did have that 'buttery' CinemaScope Color by Deluxe palatte to begin with, now showing some age-related shifts. Nevertheless, the detail was there and it looked fine overall - actually better than I was expecting from the caps - but you won't haul this disc out to dazzle anyone. You might watch it again though, as I surely will, if only to re-experience this strangely effective movie curiosity underpinned by Alex North's 5 star score.
