Zulu is a damn good classic action film. I love it so much that - in a rare case for me - I actually own both releases I am always amazed when someone writes they have never seen it, but then again it was always on network TV in the 70s and 80s when I was growing up.
I own both releases of this too. This is one movie that I had to have! I bought the UK version before the TT release was ever announced. When TT's version came along, I had to have that too, because of TT's reputation for being particular in what they choose, as far as technical merits go ... and of course because I love the movie so much.

Like you say, the UK Paramount version's colors pop ... quite a bit more than TT's release. It's a very tough call, but I prefer the tad muted color palette found on TT's version. But I admit that's a personal choice. To each their own.

One thing that I don't see discussed too much is that, to my eyes, the UK version is slightly vertically stretched, whereas the TT version is not. Once I noticed the difference, I can't "un"notice it. I think it's the biggest deal breaker for me.

And finally, the supplements are different on each version. There are some awesome special features on the UK version. These comments are quoted from blu-ray.com's review:
[Show spoiler]"In addition to the original theatrical trailer this Blu-ray disc also offers a very large featurette which has been broken into smaller bits: "The Music of Zulu", "Zulu: Remembering an Epic", "The Making of Zulu: Role of Honor", "The Making of Zulu:…Snappeth the Spear in Sunder". The entire featurette is incredibly informative. From John Barry's comments on the energy and classic spirit of the soundtrack, to the numerous comments addressing the filming style of Cy Endfield produced by the cast and crew to the excellent analysis by film historian Sheldon Hall there really is plenty of information here that should quench your thirst for anything Zulu. I highly recommend that you take the necessary time and watch all of the four segments mentioned above. Finally, the Blu-ray disc also offers a full-blown commentary with Zulu's second unit director Robert Porter and film historian Sheldon Hall. I went through the entire commentary, which is the reason why I could not publish this review immediately after the disc arrived, and indeed this commentary alone is enough of a reason for me to highly recommend this disc. Sheldon Hall provides an excellent deconstruction of the entire film supplanted by plenty of curious details about the history of the film, production, etc. Once again, I strongly recommend that you listen to it as this isn't a standard filler of a commentary as the ones many releases appear to be plagues with, this is indeed an informative analysis with plenty to offer. (Note: You will be able to play all of the extras on your Region-A PS3 or SA without a problem)."

The TT version has its own audio-commentary track and the isolated score (plus the trailer), but that's all. I will never get rid of the UK version for the special features alone.

I love this movie too! (Can you tell?)

Yesterday, my first order from SAE arrived and a second order shipped.

It's time to dig in. I'm curious to see how much more sinister the yuppies in The Believers are compared to the yuppies in Wall Street, as the TT booklet asserts. Besides, The Believers will make a great triple dip with Race with the Devil and The Serpent and the Rainbow.

Well, like I said...choosy!! I'm trying to keep my Blu collection manageable at around 300, and they have to be films that I will never tire of watching and revisiting.

lesco, there's nothing wrong with being economical, even though I typically buy in bulk. Collections are meant to be unique to each individual.

John Barry's score to the film is one of the best I have ever heard. It is a rare example where the score makes a very good film great. To this day, I cannot think of Zulu and not hear the stirring notes of Barry's theme in my head.

Here is a great montage of Barry's music set to images from the 1964 film as well as illustrations and photographs from the actual 1879 Zulu War. For those who haven't seen the movie yet, or even for those who have, this little clip will get you pumped up. I think it is better than the actual movie trailer.

I agree with you totally on Zulu, as I did on Rapture. One should also check out Zulu Dawn (not TT), made a decade later detailing events that led up to Zulu. Great double feature.

I have to throw my hat in the ring when it comes to Zulu, which is a phenomenal action/war film and historical epic. Cy Endfield, the director, also gave us Mysterious Island and Sands of the Kalahari. The 60s were a very interesting decade for him.

I'm content with my [loaded] UK steelbook release but for anybody on the fence this sale is a great opportunity to own it.

Really happy to see all the love for Zulu, especially considering it's a blind buy in my second batch I've ordered during this sale!

This sale has basically cleared my wishlist of all the TT titles that have been around for a while that piqued my interest. I think I only have 5 left in my wishlist on SAE's site, and they're ones that have been recently released.

My second order has shipped!

Today is a good day. It's nice to finally catch up on some of the Woody Allen releases I've been missing, and I snagged American Buffalo at the 9.99 close-out price.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S SEX COMEDY (1982)
ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS (1986)
AMERICAN BUFFALO (1996)
A MONTH IN THE COUNTRY (1987)
10 TO MIDNIGHT (1983)
DOGS OF WAR (1980)
ANGEL (AKA DANNY BOY / 1982)

Mine, too. I have One Million Years, B.C. from Studio Canal and Star Trek: the Animated Series to watch while waiting. Really looking forward to Moby Dick, though.

Quick question. Placed order on the 16th. SAE took the funds immediately from my debit card. Today I come to find that the funds have been put back in my bank account. Now, I know that they put an authorization hold on pre-orders, but unless I'm mistaken, I've never known them to do this for in stock items. I'm only slightly concerned as one of the titles I ordered has since sold out. The order still says pending, btw. Anyone else experiencing this?

I'm all about Deborah Kerr playing a nun (she's one of my favorite actresses), so I'm grabbing Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison and Zulu on your recommendation.

I'm going to kill my delivery person before Christmas, at this rate, lol.

Buying from Twilight Time directly...

Distributor less than 30 miles away. They hand off to USPS last night, well packed sturdy box is handed to me, at my door, by a mail delivery person today.

I placed six orders with SAE in total, the first on the 16th and the last on the 21st. Upon reading what you had to say I double checked my bank accounts to find that an order I placed last Friday hasn't been withdrawn from my account, even though the others have all been deducted.

Under my orders it still says pending, and I received a confirmation email upon placing the order. It's a really, really large order, so now I'm wondering if the size of the order has somehow delayed the transaction.

Not sure what big or large would be. Place order Wed 11/16, 2:49 PM for 5 older Twilight Time, still pending. Never had a delay like this from them.

Well, it's a 33-film order, to be specific. It's the largest single order I can recall making in 10 years of collecting, and it's going to burn a hole in my pocket (not that I mind). So I'm understandably curious what's happening with it.

As far as your order pending, I suppose it's good to know other people have orders on the 16th still pending. My first order from the 16th is still pending as well, but at least they've taken my money for that order. I'm sure they're overwhelmed.

These questions come up often whenever there's a big sale, particularly when many orders are concurrent with the new releases coming out. Yes, sometimes Screen Archives are slow to get the orders processed and out. On some occasions in the past I have waited weeks for them to get to my order, sometimes I luck out and get it after a day or two. Yes, many of us board regulars are well aware of how annoying, inconvenient, unfair, inefficient, etc. it is. All I can say is rest assured that they may be slow but they're reliable and you will get your orders safe and secure at some point.

I hope everything goes well with your order....I would be concerned about it as well....

I've ordered from Screen Archives at least 6 or 7 times... sometimes they take awhile to actually ship the order, and sometimes they don't. Can't figure out any rhyme or reason.

My first orders I placed from them took about a week before they shipped, my recent orders ship immediately (I got my order from last week's sale yesterday)

Thanks. Same to all of you in a similar situation.

Fortunately none of the 33 films (in my gargantuan order) are sold out yet... I managed to grab all the sellouts except First Men in the Moon and The Way we Were, which sold out very early, or even before the sale began.
