Canada The Day After...

Okay, that happened.

Now that NOTLD90 is a record sellout and EM is cooking along fine, it looks like we're back to TT's charter focus for next month:

I've never seen The Rains of Ranchipur, just the '39 B&W original The Rains Came, and not even that since the late 70s. But here we have yet another Fox 'Scope title which has been a total home video no-show until now. Is it any good? As soon as I see Lana Turner's name above the title, I immediately think 'clothes rack'. And Burton as a Hindi will no doubt require some mental adjustment...ideally accompanied by 100-proof 'medication'. Nothing could keep me away though; I'm just trying to adjust my expectations going in.

As for Bonjour Tristesse, I saw the DVD about 10 years ago and recall liking it...a lot. Not Preminger's usual kind of 'big issue' gig, more continental in tone as befitting the locale and subject, but nevertheless very well done...I mean, how far wrong can you go with Niven and Kerr on board? I don't have that DVD anymore, but I seem to recall a pretty snappy transfer too. And it's been just long enough since seeing it that I think it will feel fresh again.

Guess we should be seeing some cover art soon...

Will make it easier to pass on some of the other titles I'm not really all that keen about either, of which there seem to be a fair number of them as of late... Will likely be getting Enemy Mine, so hopefully it doesn't go too quickly, have a feeling it will sooner than I'd like though.
You got plenty of time to get EM .

I haven't seen either the Rains of ranchipur, but I will buy it because I like such films.
There is not even a trailer of it in the internet!
Does anyone know where I can find one?

and on a sidenote:

I'd love if Twilight time would release more Peplum/religious/roman-egyptian epics! (like the Egyptian)

VUDU has a 2-min preview and also what they call a "trailer".

Barabbas would be a good choice. Fall of the Roman Empire is available from the UK.

I know what you mean. I do that all the time (... getting caught up in the OOP frame-of-mind thing). I let NOTLD pass by too as I've never seen it before. But I have seen the original numerous times. So far, I'm not regretting it ............... so far.

I know TT needs to make a buck, but I hope they don't sway too far away from the more or less forgotten films (... insert plug for your favorite guilty pleasure here, like One Million Years B.C.).

Their charter focus wont sell nearly as well as NOTLD or any other horror scifi or genre film for that matter. And it isnt because of the price tag

Just FYI rkolinski...those Amazon previews are blocked for IPs outside the U.S. where their streaming service isn't offered.

The '73 LOST HORIZON is one of the worst musicals ever made. It has two or three nice songs, but it's such a lame adaptation of the book, or a remake of the '37 classic if you prefer, that I find it nearly unwatchable. If you like the soundtrack, just stick to collecting that, otherwise, I don't expect much in the way of sales for this one.

Wow, all these smilie icons and not one with a "holding-the-nose-because-this movie-stinks-so-much" icon.

I'd love to see it again too Beard Esquire, but unfortunately that's a WB title and TT only has access to the Fox and Sony catalogues.

Mickey One would make a good Twilight Time release. An underrated Arthur Penn effort that pairs him with Warren Beatty a few years before Bonnie and Clyde. It's got a pretty good jazz soundtrack too.

I'd also like to see TT release some Cassavetes or The Panic in Needle Park. The latter is a fabulous film, Al Pacino's first major role but it has no score whatsoever, so it's probably not ideal for TT.

Yet I recognize the commercial reasons why much of this stuff has remained locked away so long, and why some of it might never see the light of day. My guess is TT is performing the equivalent of battlefield 'triage', rescuing the most interesting titles, in the best shape, that still have enough life in them to justify a 3000 unit run.

Well, it's clear from the level of discourse on this very board (as well as the resulting friction at times) that there are two, very distinct Twilight Time audiences with seemingly little overlap:
  • post-80s fans - hate the price, hate the limited release model, have little or no curiosity about anything never seen, demand only original poster art for the covers and will make their own if they have to
  • pre-70s fans - no feeling either way about the price, it's fair for the quality, support a limited release model if it means getting more vault titles that won't see a release any other way, willing to roll the dice on previously unseen vintage titles out of basic film history curiosity, actually still read, thus appreciate the informed liner notes, love the snappy interpretive covers and are fine with the poster being reproduced on the last page of the insert
Regardless whether they expand their release schedule, I don't see how there can ever be any homogeneity here...TT's polar demographic range would give any marketer recurring nightmares...with or without zombies.

Ok, Rock time to put your theory to the test . Let's see how well or not Bonjour Tristesse and The Rains of Ranchipur sell since they supposedly would attract the big spenders .

Oh yeah...and why not pair it up with Fox' Murder Inc. for a Mob theme month?

But you still seem to be missing my larger point Blu, and inexplicably misrepresenting my original post to boot. I claimed only that there are two distinct streams of "interest" with this label: "fans" of post-80s titles, and "fans" of pre-70s titles. Those "fans" often fall into distinct generational age groups, but not exclusively. In a later post which you've conveniently chosen to ignore, I freely admitted (as others have as well), that I straddle both streams of interest as a film fan and as a Blu-ray collector.

In any case, I claimed no such thing regarding sales performance, and have no idea why you're trying to pit bears against bunnies here. Of course the more recent pop/horror/genre titles will always sell faster. That's just S.O.P. Marketing. In fact, TT will probably be lucky to eventually break even on a title like The Rains of Ranchipur, but I'm still glad they did it, labour of love that it might very well turn out to be. As a previously missing page from motion picture history, I'm a heckuva lot more excited to see that one finally coming our way than something that's been routinely available in every home video format to date, such as Christine.

Just different tastes. Just a difference of opinion. Nothing to alarm yourself over Blu. I'm here for the moooovies...all kinds.

Yes please, I would love for any of those films to make it to Blu-ray. Sadly I don't think they'd sell 3000 copies of them at TT's typical pricing structure, but you never know.

As for Twilight Time, they obviously need to combine their customer demographics into one. Zombie musicals...

Although not a Fox or Columbia property Clark, such a genre oddity apparently exists:
