My latest shipment included a magnet for the Tribute CD release of the Herrmann Battle of Neretva / Naked and the Dead scores. Last month I got one for Burnt Offerings. Not one CD in either of those shipments*. Go figure.

* although I do routinely buy CD scores from SAE, so as a cross-promotional tool, the magnet was doing its job.

First rule of SAE Magnets is: you do not talk about SAE Magnets.

The Second rule of SAE Magnets is: you DO NOT talk about SAE Magnets!

Third rule of SAE Magnets: you DO NOT use an SAE Magnet as an actual fridge magnet. If you do, they peel. Your fight for mint collectibility is over.

Fourth rule: the ONLY way to store an SAE Magnet is inside the case, pressed flat behind the insert booklet. Dovetailing with...

Fifth rule: ONLY one SAE Magnet per case. Also dovetailing with...

Sixth rule: Sell or trade ALL surplus SAE Magnets. Good for pocketbook. Good for karma.

Seventh rule: SAE Magnets will only be provided when SAE darn well feels like promoting something with them. We have NO entitlement.

And the Eighth and final rule: if this is your first SAE magnet, you must to keep it. Do not destroy. Do not discard. Do not give away. This is your charter token and talisman for membership in the SAE Magnet Club.

Looks like "the transfer was undoubtedly approved by the filmmakers" though...

My memory of the original film is a little foggy now HyperRealist, but that just looks like a 'day for night' shot that wasn't transferred correctly for the original DVD. There are lots of examples of that kind of gamma error over the years...scenes that are supposed to be occurring at dusk or in darkness that are as bright as noon.

I'd have to see that shot in context though before questioning Sony's HD master for this Blu-ray. At a glance, it just looks like they've corrected the earlier mistake.

I'm still willing to give this transfer a fair viewing to see these scenes in context.

The screencaps certainly do give one pause for thought. But I have to wonder if, as been suggested, this a "correction" (for lack of a better word) of some scenes that were intended to be darker.

Obviously, if the whole film was transferred 3 stops darker, that would be considered am error of significant proportion. But we have to consider that such an error would be extremely out of character for a Sony transfer. Owning many Twilight Time titles, I can tell you that I have some niggles with the Fox transfers. However, the Sony transfers are near perfect. In fact, Sony catalogue product (remember when they used to release their own catalogue titles) in general has been regarded as among the very best in the business.

It just seems very odd that, after years of producing the best catalogue transfers, Sony would suddenly and dramatically underexpose a whole movie on disc.

I really need to see this one myself (but, being in Canada, that could be Thursday at the earliest).

Maybe it's an error, like with Arachnophobia? I don't know if you've been following it, but it was originally set for release with the brightness level being too high. Disney/Buena Vista did a quick recall, and actually fixed the mistake.

Could this be something similar?

Okay, those aren't uncorrected 'day for night' shots HyperRealist. Someone (Director Savini? Producer Romero?) definitely made some choices here regarding the gamma and colour balance of this HD transfer.

But wait...that second frame on the bottom row doesn't even appear in focus! I mean, is that even a screen cap, or just a cam snap off a monitor?

Something is fishy here; this isn't par for either Sony or TT. I've got to see this disc for myself...

Yeah, I'm wondering the same. The BD doesn't even appear to have more detail than the DVD in those shots.

I will view it tonight....
