I just noticed that Bell, Book & Candle is listed for insane prices on Amazon and Ebay compared to other TT OOP titles. What gives? Is it really that sought-after of a title, or are those sellers just vastly over-estimating demand?

(FYI, I blindly bought it before it went OOP and I have never gotten around to watching it. I recently thought about watching it, but now I'm thinking I should keep it sealed.)

Remove the seal from your Bell, Book and Candle Blu-ray, and then watch the movie.

Money is fluid and ephemeral. It flows through your fingers like water, and it's already gone as soon as it arrives.
Great movies last forever, though, and they have permanent places in your mind and memory.

I agree with the spirit of this, but if I may suggest, rather than opening the sealed one that you have, look into buying an open one and selling the sealed one. Even factoring in what you initially spent, you'll wind up ahead on the deal (so you can buy *another* great movie), and if you wind up not liking it, you can sell the unsealed copy and probably make back that cost.

This works even better if you have a movie which is sealed and has a slipcover (unless you care about slipcovers).

But you could probably pick up a DVD copy of it for $4.

The amount one would net buying a DVD of this vs selling a sealed HD copy could buy quite a few movies.

And yes, the ebay selling history suggests it has an unusual resale value.

I'm not sure a movie with a 6.9 on IMDB is worth nearly an extra $90 to watch in HD vs SD.

It's a pretty popular title so even if some of those prices are inflated, you're still going to profit quite a bit by selling your sealed copy. It's a good movie, but I didn't think it was all that great or anything. You could always rent the movie beforehand to determine if it's a keeper or not.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I thinking of keeping it sealed for now, and picking up a dvd copy for cheap to watch the movie for the first time (to see if I actually like the movie).

I've never seen the movie before. I bought the BD during a TT sale because I was intrigued by the plot, and I loved the BD cover art. It's been sitting on my shelf since then (along with probably one to two hundred other unwatched - so far - BDs, including a bunch of other TT titles bought during sales and which have since gone OOP).

I really need to devote more time to watching BDs.

Each to his own taste, as the French say. I own 76 TT titles (with two more on order) and Bell, Book and Candle is my favorite. I can't really say why, but the cast, the photography, and the overall essence of the film epitomize, to me, Hollywood filmmaking at its zenith. And Kim Novak's not hard to look at either.

I'd much rather look at her in Pal Joey.

An ancient place to get a copy to watch may be your Library. Most have DVDs available for checkout and mine has this title. Many will allow you to reserve copy online so you don't have to feel entirely old school.

Just a heads-up that TT has decided to put back the release of William Goldman's YEAR OF THE COMET (1992) a couple of weeks as we are trying to "clear" one last element for the title - it's a gamble as we might not be able to include it in the end, but we are having a go and it will be a treat for movie music lovers if we're successful...wish us luck!

Even that is between $50 and $100. Oddly, the two which were still sealed are pretty close to the outliers in either direction.

I just pre-ordered...

The Fortune Cookie
You'll Never Get Rich
How to Steal a Million

Along with these pre-orders, I also placed an order for the Code Red Blu-ray of Shakma. All of that lowbrow Billy Wilder, William Wyler, and Sidney Lanfield stuff is fun, but it's also like bubble gum for the mind, and I occasionally crave more cerebral and reflective cinematic fare. I'm not trying to come off as pretentious or snobby in this thread, but I do think that Twilight Time fans should realize that there are other options out there as far as movies go.

If you bought a fortune cookie it would say "you'll never get rich but I'll tell you how to steal a million".

Thanks for the tip.

I actually didn't know that such a search function existed. (But, I do now).

Just note that those sold prices can be skewed as well. For example, some of those could have been sold when the disc was still available at Screen Archives, or if the seller simply put it up as a Buy it Now for $50, not realizing the true value of what he had. There's really no way to gauge its true value other than posting it on eBay and letting the market decide. No matter what though, it WILL sell for more than whatever he paid for it.
