Have not seen any of these, looks like a decent bunch of films to potentially blind buy. Need to watch the trailers / look for small clips on YouTube to get a feel for what I may buy. Nicholas and Alexandra is a go - the others have potential.

Now that's what I'm talkin' about!

First class (and expensive) list.

I'm guaranteeing pre-orders for both the FLINT movies and EXPERIMENT IN TERROR.

PONY SOLDIER isn't ringing a bell so I'll have to research it.

I'm borderline on NICHOLAS AND ALEXANDRA.

But three for sure.

Oh, I'm DEFINITELY in for the Flint flicks! I have kept an eye on Amazon for these since starting to buy blu-rays about two years ago (obviously with no success). The first of the two ['Our Man...'] is - to me - THE definitive spy parody, while still being serious enough to hold up as a story.

At first glance, I might go for the Flint flicks. I'll need to give the others more thought.

In order of anticipation/delight:

1. Blake Edwards' Experiment in Terror! I've had my fingers crossed for this baby since day one here. Great performances. Great Noir-ish look and feel. Plus another top tier score by Henry Mancini. Woo-dee-hoo-hoo-hoo!!!

2. & 3. The Flint films...just for the brassy, sassy, classy period fun. Plus...count 'em...two Jerry Goldsmith scores!!

4. Pony Soldier...mainly because this has been another total MIA on DVD. Never saw it. But it was one of the last classic 3-strip Technicolor pics, starred Tyrone Power and had a score by Alex North. Plus it's about the Mounties. That's good enough for me.

5. Nicholas and Alexandra...one of the last "BIG" studio historical epics...well written, expertly staged, and handsomely dressed in every corner of the frame. Nominated for 6 Oscars and winner of 2. Should be a beauty on Blu.

I'm definitely in for the Flint movies, now they just need to put out the Matt Helm movies to complete the set

Canada A taste of Mancini's...

...tasty score for Experiment in Terror:
Is it just my imagination or did Tarantino riff a few bars from this in one of his Kill Bill films?

By odd coincidence, I just bought this yesterday from B&N:

I read the paperback in college. The hardback has been OOP for years until a month ago when it was reprinted (yeah, I am still a hardback book lover) This is also available electonically.

Does anyone know if the book by Robert K. Massie was the basis for the film? I have never seen the movie. The book is outstanding; Massie is a historian who knows how to write a compelling narrative and bring to vivid life the world of the last Tsar of all the Russias. Ultimately, it is the story of an immense tragedy.

The book goes into depth about the changing times at the turrn of the 19th Century, Nicholas' and the ruling families' blindly obstinate refusal to bring on true reform until it is too late, his true love for Alexandra, her role in "stiffening" his spine to continue autocratic rule, the hemophiliac heir to the throne and the impact this had on history, the lovely daughters, the cataclysm of the First World War, all leading to revolution and the death of a dynasty.

Sure was oildude, and a fine adaptation at that. Here's an interesting tribute with some tantalzing glimpses at the epic scope of this film:

Thanks for the link. It is directed by Franklin J. Schaffner! I remember hearing about this movie when I was a kid. This is one of the few epic films I have never seen. I never caught it on TV, nor did any video rental outlet carry it in the days when I rented VHS and DVDs. I have always heard it is a good film from those who have seen it, yet it never seemed available for viewing whenever I thought about seeking it out. Before long, I had forgotten about it.

So for me, Nicholas and Alexandra is a "lost" film.

Not quite lost-"lost" oildude. There was a Columbia/Sony DVD of Nicholas and Alexandra released way back in 1999:

I never saw the DVD, only the original theatrical release. One of the reasons I never bothered with it on DVD was that its audio was Mono-only, which seemed rather odd, because this film was shot in anamorphic 2.35:1 35mm and blown up to 2.20:1 70mm for theatrical release. That means a stereo mix in 4-channel must exist...somewhere. So I trust this Sony HD master restores those original audio specs, because I can't imagine TT taking any serious interest in it otherwise - especially for an IST. At 189 minutes though, this is a very long film, so I hope it also receives BD-50 authoring.

For 60s catalogue titles, I think TT will do well with all of these Torrente. In particular, those Flint movies have quite a worldwide following and have been successful in every home video format to date...even warranting re-release on DVD via box set. Frankly, considering the renewed interest Fox seems to be taking in its catalogue for '13 I'm surprised they gave these up. But I bet TT's cover dude will have some great throwback 60s pop fun with the artwork.

As for Experiment in Terror, it's just a superb, underappreciated film which had a quiet Columbia/Sony 'Remastered in High Definition' DVD release back in '03. When that edition went out of print, I sold mine just as the prices started getting really stupid (they've since come back to earth, sort of). So considering my net profit from that DVD sale, by my calculation, this Blu-ray will cost me about $9.00 bucks in real dollars.

This is exactly the kind of titles that TT should be focusing on I know that popular and (relatively) new titles helping them pay their bills and make some extra dollars, but with stuff like this,TT justifies its label name and cause.Love most of the latest announcements.
Though,it seems little funny that Our Man Flint is coming in Jan.,and its sequel in Feb.

Maybe that will turn out to be a very shrewd move Akijama. I have no difficulty imagining a brisk run on Our Man Flint - not as fast as Fright Night or NOTLD90, more like Journey to the Center of the Earth. Then the following month, pre-orders for the sequel go up, and there's a double-hit, one title reinforcing sales of the other. A mere 3000 Blu-rays of both OMF and ILF could be gone in 90 days or less.

So...what happened to Christine? Just pushed back to March-April? Or on hold indefinitely?

To TT's credit, there may be some keen marketing going on here. TT released NOTLD90 at a time when current zombie movies and TV shows are very popular. Now they're coming out with the Flint movies while there is a current James Bond frenzy going on. Coincidence?
