I love classic movies and Deborah Kerr, but i see it's not highly rated at imdb.
I've never seen Beloved Infidel, but it appears to be another 'lost in the Fox vault 'Scope movie like The Sound and the Fury, The Rains of Ranchipur, The Wayward Bus, The Roots of Heaven, Désirée, or High Time...targeted primarily at the widescreen geek and collector faithful. And it's fair to say, you either dig this period and style of moviemaking, or you don't. Personally, I think these 50s Adler-era 'Scope pictures are a blast...more so because most of them have never been available in their original widescreen form on home video (at least via Region 1 DVD or Region A Blu-ray). They also appeal to me because they usually feature some of the champs of golden/silver era studio scoring (I love ISTs), plus production values that were top drawer for the era. Sure, the effects can be dodgey by today's standards, but boy did those studio craftsmen ever know how to design and build great sets and layer in an evocative and memorable score.

So Beloved Infidel won't be for everyone filmmusic, and its IMDb rating merely reflects that demographic difference in tastes...especially for those who have never experienced movies like this in their original 'Scope aspect ratio, just panned-and-scanned on VHS. I mean, I see lots of outright classic films sitting there with 6.5 to 7.1 IMDb ratings which should be ranked much higher. So even for the best of the oldies, those IMDb user ratings are often very unreliable because they're so easily skewed (all you need is an e-mail account to log in and start rating). I don't trust them to not be artificially lower or higher...I mean going strictly by those ratings, you'd get the impression that almost every great film was made in the last 20 years or so.

Thank you for your elaborate thoughts ROclockCK.
I like that period and style of moviemaking very much, but maybe i'll hold on this.

by the way, I don't know what to do.. :-((
I have $70 to spend, and i have 2 options:
-I want to buy Enemy Mine and Rains of Ranchipur.
-I want to buy some Criterion that is 50% off in Barnes and Noble and it's only for 2 weeks more.

If I don't buy the TT releases they may be OOP later.
If I don't buy the Criterion releases, I'll miss the bargain.

Tough choice!!

It is extremely unlikely that Rains of Ranchipur will ever sell out, and there are still over 1400 copies left of Enemy Mine, so there's no urgent rush there. I'm guessing there will be a big spike in the latter once Christine is up for pre-order, but that's not until March at the earliest.

Personally I would go with the TT releases. It is likely that B&N will have another Criterion sale. I believe it has already been confirmed that there will be a 40% off sale in December (though that may be for art house blus), some of the Criterions will certainly be discounted as well.

I totally understand your dilemma...

well, someone in the comments of the news for the Barnes & Noble discount, says this is being done twice a year.
I was almost at checkout in B&N and now I'm rethinking it.. Anyway..

Agree, and I had a crush on Brooke Shields so this title will definitely be in my collection

The easy answer is to just go with the titles that appeal to you most as mooovies filmmusic. But if all of them do, more or less equally, then I always go after whatever I'm least likely to get a better crack at...in this case, probably those sale Criterions. It's not like the prices of TT's Blu-rays are going to change, only their availability.

However, the *wildcard* here is the upcoming holiday. This season can cause sudden spikes and runs on certain items, especially limited or collector edition Blu-rays intended as gifts. Last Christmas, TT was still too new to the Blu-ray format, so after Fright Night blew through, that left only 3 other titles...not a lot of choice for combined gift giving. But with all their superb catalogue releases in 2012, I could see some extra 'combined' action this time around.

How much? Nobody knows. Enemy Mine is probably safe for a few more months, at least through spring '13, and The Rains of Ranchipur could hang around for a year or so after that. Or not. There's no rulebook for this Blu-ray distribution model...they're still writing it. Heck, I wish I had a 'fin' for every obscure, vintage soundtrack I thought I could put off buying for few more months, then bang, out of nowhere, a "less than 500 remaining" announcement. That's the trick filmmusic; if you are budgeting your purchases of TT's Blu-rays, and spacing them out throughout the year, then just watch for those low stock announcements...someone always posts them here as soon as they go up.

Sorry everyone, I will go off topic here but I do have a question. Is there any news on when Lost Horizon is going on pre-order? Is it this week or next?

Thanks! I will mark this down. I know very little chance of this going sold out (ever) but really want to have my order in quickly

Beloved Infidel is at the top of my own list P@t. Followed by Lost Horizon (mainly out of camp curiosity). Finally The Blue Lagoon (in the "oh what the h3ll, the cinematography will probably be pretty in 1080p" category).

I realize this will probably be the exact opposite of their actual sales performance...

we can make lot's of joke about The Blue Lagoon and the reasons why most of the boys will be buying it but yes the cinematography would probably also be very nice on this release on Blu-ray. You have some nice tropical settings in that movie. Of course I know why all of you are buying it

Barns and Noble has the sale twice a year, but it is not a guaranteed thing for the future. The chance of EM selling out in the next year is small...the chances of Rains of Ranchipur selling out ever are even smaller. You can buy 3 Criterion titles for less than you will pay for two TT titles ;-).

well, about the first part of your reply:
I haven't seen at all the TT films I wanted to buy, and I was anxious to see them.
While on the other hand, I have seen the 3 Criterion releases I want to buy (Howards End, Charade, Double life of Veronique).

I'm leaning towards Criterion, because as someone said, next such discount will be on July. And you don't know what will happen then.
i could hold for the 40% discount on December, but 50% off is better than 40% for 3 titles..

Yes, i believe too Ranchipur will hold a lot.. And i can check regularly the copies left on Enemy Mine.
The thing is that until February, many TT releases will pile up, since I want to definitely buy Black Lagoon and Nicholas and ALexandra too..

@Blu Titan
Actually the 3 Criterion cost a dollar or 2 more than the 2 TT. ;-)
(due to shipping)

One trick is to always keep some titles in your SAE cart and/or wish list filmmusic. Twice last year, SAE offered spot 10% off sales to customers with unfulfilled items still in their queue. Not a huge reduction, but it can defer your shipping costs.

I have kept 5-6 items in my wish list for 3 months now, but i haven't got a coupon or something yet, as others reported..
