If anybody is interested, the Pure Cinema Podcast did a Twilight Time episode again as a tribute to Nick Redman. They talk about Redman some and then recommend titles they've enjoyed.

“Contains Fallout, the exclusive, patented ingredient.”

Perhaps because of its roster of rock’n’roll legends The Girl Can’t Help It has overshadowed Frank Tashlin, Tony Randall and Jayne Mansfield’s subsequent comedy – even more now than on its original release - yet somehow I still prefer Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? The Madison Avenue satire shares little more than a title and a character with George Axelrod’s hit Broadway sendup of Hollywood, and it lacks the energy and jukebox construction of Girl (I mean the musical numbers, not the gal herself), but in taking on the corporate advertising rat race rather than the music-and-gangsters milieu it seems just grounded enough for the gags to seem alternately more pertinent and more audacious. As well as being very smart, it’s also unbelievably smutty at times, almost taking even more delight in censor-baiting than its predecessor, albeit with less milk. And in-jokes abound, whether it be Joan Blondell uttering “Well I’ll be a writer’s subplot,” a Technicolor-dyed poodle named after Girl’s cinematographer Leon Shamroy, numerous plays on Mansfield's own filmography or a breathtakingly audacious two-minute break in the film for the benefit of TV viewers that
[Show spoiler]sees the CinemaScope screen reduced to 21 inches of rolling flickering monochrome
.

Twilight Time’s region-free Blu-ray release is going to be a case of some you win, some you lose for some: for the most part it’s a significant upgrade over Fox’s DVD and Masters of Cinema’s long-deleted and now pricey UK Bluray, with noticeably more detail. Viewed side by side the MoC disc is brighter (at times a little too bright) with the impression that either DNR has been used or some detail has been degraded by the brightness boosting in some shots, while the newer master used for the TT disc is darker (perhaps darker than it should be though never too dark) but with a teal push in some scenes, most notably the fourth-wall breaking opening titles, the first scene in Henry Jones’ office and the boardroom scene, though they haven’t gone overboard with it and for the most part it’s less noticeable in motion. It’s one of those cases where both transfers have found different ways of dealing with the limitations of the early CinemaScope lenses and neither offers a truly definitive transfer, so this may come down to personal taste, though for my money the strengths outweigh the weaknesses.

The extras package is different from MoC’s disc too, restoring Dana Polan’s audio commentary from the DVD release, adding some eight minutes of unused mute newsreel footage of Jayne Mansfield’s publicity tour to the one minute newsreel extract, the original trailer (which includes footage of Tashlin but unfortunately gives away the closing cameo by Georgie Schmidlap), isolated score and booklet.

I also noticed that Fox are releasing Hombre in Germany too, end of May, which is another OOP Twilight Time title.

. I'm in for Bandolero. Now if we could just get Fathom cleared for release. Also, Baby the Rain Must Fall, also intrigues me as a title to get during a sale.

A nice selection of releases for May, and I am glad for those of you who have been waiting for these titles. I remain hopeful that some day (been asking for these two since TT began) the Columbia/Sony films "The Long Ships" and "Trouble With Angels" will see Blu-ray release by Twilight Time. I'm patient ....

Baby the Rain Mist Fall and Bandolero!

Steve McQueen and Raquel Welch are always welcome in my collection.

Hopefully a label picked up Mother, Jugs, and Speed

Another really strong month - Warlock is one of the best Westerns of the 50s and I can finally retire my Mill Creek 4-film DVD set with Bobby Deerfield, The Chase and Ship of Fools, which I was only holding on to for Baby, The Rain Must Fall. Wonder if the Bandolero isolated score will include the groovy disco demo version of the main theme that's an extra on the expanded CD?

Bandolero! - Main Title - Jerry Goldsmith (Surf Version!) - YouTube
Doubtful...the TT isolated score tracks almost never feature "album arrangements" of cues.
