Interesting article. I still hope for the best for Twilight Time but the tone of this piece doesn't inspire optimism.

with their assortment of bonus features, limited editions, and in-depth essays...Twilight Time gave Criterion a run for their money.

Let's not get crazy here...

I sincerely hope TT will continue putting out releases, even if it means lowering their output to 1-3 titles a month. Over the past 6+ years, their catalog has exposed me to so many great films that I'd never heard about or seen before and it would be a shame if TT were unable to continue releasing these gems.

Nobody knows until a definite announcement is made, but at this point I think nearly everyone believes that Twilight Time is dead in the water and we're just waiting for a clearance sale.

You'd think that if they wanted to sell those "200+ titles over two websites", these would be at a reduced price on a permanent basis...

Yeah, at least would be nice to keep them going as an outlet for the more obscure Sony/Columbia releases. There's plenty that they COULD still do, and I'm not sure what other blu-ray label would pick them up.

The MGM stuff was sort of their downfall, since it was lesser quality (in PQ department) and MGM just licenses to everyone - making the "limited edition" model sort of a scam for those. Of course a few select higher profile Sony titles were also re-licensed or re-issue by Sony directly, but at least they stayed at the same quality so original owners of the Twilight Time releases shouldn't feel too bad on those.

Thanks. I'll have to get the Fox titles I'm still interested in during the next sale(s). Fortunately I have all the OOP titles I wanted. Really sad to read about the passing of Nick and the probable fate of Twilight Time. I have quite a few of their movies in my collection that I've enjoyed over the years, but on the whole I liked the Fox movies more than the others (especially Conrack, Rapture, Fate is the Hunter, Jane Eyre, Man Hunt, Swamp Water, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Hombre and Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte). Probably because they have a higher share of Golden Era movies.

Not much information in that article, in reference to TT evaluating whether their current model is still viable could also mean that they're open to changing their model and not just that they'll close up shop.

Thanks for that. I don't have a copy yet, so I wasn't aware that they got it from Sony. List has been corrected.

Let's not get crazy here...
He also pleads for people to buy the product while in the same breath effusively talks about all the free screeners he’s gotten from them. He doesn’t put his money where his mouth is. Instead of expecting everyone else to save the label, why doesn’t this “critic” actually buy his own copies and practice what he preaches? Talk is cheap.

I'd disagree: publicity is the lifeblood of the industry, and if no-one is talking about your product (good or bad) it might as well be that tree that philosophers wonder if it makes any sound in the forest. The reason films have held advance screenings for films and (in some cases - the practice has always been more limited than you might think) send out screeners is to build and reinforce awareness of the product and the company, which is what he's doing with the article. He's being open about how he gets his copies to be open about any accusation of bias (the same way this and other Bluray sites and as has been standard industry practice for decades) and he's trying to spread the word to people outside this site that the label needs support. There is value in what he's doing.

I see your point, but I don't think asking others to do their fair share while at the same time you yourself are only contributing words seems a very good idea and it doesn't sit well with me. Of course, discussion about product and labels helps a lot, but every other person online nowadays is a "critic" and has a review site, the majority of which are laughable. To be perfectly frank, I agree with a previous poster who said this blogger or critic or whatever he is supposed to be doesn't even seem all that knowledgeable about the label. Call me a cynic, but some of what he writes seems to be begging for the label to survive just so he can continue to get his freebies. So I think if that's the publicity Twilight Time needs to survive, they would do just as well to send screeners to everyone who has posted on this thread.

In other words, I would rather put my trust in people who have actually PAID for something than someone who has gotten it for free from the company.

EDIT TO ADD: Aclea, if it were you who was getting the screeners I would have less of an issue with it because I know of your knowledge, experience and professionalism. Your posted reviews on this site, both positive and negative, have often been profoundly insightful and invaluable for many of us. Your efforts far transcend that of many of the so-called "critics" online.

I just checked a moment ago and cannot find any TT titles on the screenarchives website. Please could someone confirm that is the case, or reassure me that it is me at fault?
