Eh, screw 'em. I have plenty of TT titles, more than half of which were bought full price, day of. Nobody can call me tight on them. There just wasn't nearly as much to buy at the time. Additionally, one can't predict what ones interests will be later on from release date to present day. People discover actors, directors, writers, genres, eras, and suddenly find themselves intrigued in things in those particular periods. A title announcement in 2015 could be of something that doesn't interest you, but a few years later could suddenly be something in an area you want to work with more. The only solution would be to blind buy everything whenever it is released. That'll show' em! Last edited by jshaide; 05-22-2020 at 04:38 PM. |

It looks like I made 4 or 5 TCM orders for about 20 discs and my average cost was $26/item in an order counting shipping and tax instead of $30 at SAE. |

Same with music. What I know is that when I determine that I have a new (to me) actress I have serious interest in, I start to buy as much as I can, especially new releases as I know from a very early age that things go out of print and get more expensive, so you might as well buy them now. Good to know others share these feelings. I also found out I have more TT titles that I did not list before, and they aren't in my customer profile, I must have ordered them before registering as a customer - that option always confused me and being in a hurry most of the time I often took it! |

Well, since SAE shipped my order from 5/14, I figured I’d give them some more business. There’s often debate about which is the best decade for film, but for me there’s no debate about the best half-decade in film. Here are three from 1971, 1972, and 1973, respectively.
[Show spoiler] As for my TT orders, Que Sera, Sera, I guess. |

Dont mean to stop the shipping discussion, but does anyone find it interesting that a handful of Gene Tierney films were a part of this line? On the one hand it's a good thing her films got released. On the other hand, it's sad her films won't receive more recognition. With many of her films being Fox films, I feel saddened by the fact many of her films will be taken out print. I should have added Dragonwyck to my SAE order- and I think of this now?

Order 740XX placed on May 10th is still showing at 'Awaiting Shipment'. 15 of the 24 items I ordered state they can no longer be re-ordered. Curious how this is going to play out. If they end up having to cancel items and refunding money, they better refund the shipping costs as well. Shipping to Canada was wildly expensive, and really shouldn't be.

For anyone interested in the long OOP titles, & alternate editions: I got the 20th Century Fox Japanese Region A edition of Breaking Away today that I ordered last week from Amazon Japan. Comparing to reviews of the TT release it looks like it is the same transfer, but has none of the special features of the TT release. It does have a slipcover though. Good value for a couple hundred dollars LESS than the TT edition is going for on ebay.

There were other notable successes, of course, including three revered noirs: Whirlpool (1949); Night and the City (1950); and Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950). She was superb in Paramount's hit comedy, The Mating Season (1951), and was very touching in Close to My Heart (1951), a classy soap opera at Warner Brothers. The last huge box office hit she appeared in was The Egyptian (1954), which was one of the top-grossing films of the year and a cult classic. Tierney appeared in 36 feature films between 1940 and 1964, and so far, 12 of them have been released on blu-ray. That's a pretty good batting average, really. I was so disappointed that Twilight Time never upgraded The Left Hand of God, in which she starred opposite Humphrey Bogart, to blu-ray; it was one of their first DVD releases. Of Tierney's 36 films, only five of them have never been released in on DVD or blu-ray in the United States: Belle Starr (1941); A Bell for Adano (1945); The Mating Season (1951); The Secret of Convict Lake (1951); and Personal Affair (1953). Miss Tierney certainly did well by Twilight Time, and vice-versa. I will always be grateful to them for that! |

Add and item to the cart, change top 100 and update. SAE maxes out at 50 so it's impossible as far as I;m aware to distinguish 50 from 1000
SAE has sent emails last week listing LOW QUANTITY items. The last one -- all 3 of the very low quantity items are sold out so best guess is those were close to 50 to begin with. The plan LOW Quantity items -- 3 have sold out (and one was sold out when the email was sent) so best guess is those are somewhere between 75-100 and 200-250. Best information says the Zelig and Cutters Way may be the next clsoest SAE Last Email updated: ALAMO BAY (1985 - LOW QUANTITY ALEXANDER THE GREAT (1956) - LOW QUANTITY AMERICAN BUFFALO (1996) - LOW QUANTITY ANASTASIA (1956) - LOW QUANTITY APPASSIONATA (1974) - LOW QUANTITY BORN FREE (1966) - LOW QUANTITY BOXCAR BERTHA (1972) - LOW QUANTITY SOLD OUT BRUTAL TALES OF CHIVALRY (AKA SHOWA ZANKYO-DEN / REGION A ONLY / 1965) - LOW QUANTITY CHATO'S LAND (1972) - LOW QUANTITY CUTTER'S WAY (1981) - LOW QUANTITY EDGE OF ETERNITY (1959) - LOW QUANTITY EXODUS (1960) - LOW QUANTITY GRAN BOLLITO (BLACK JOURNAL / 1977) - LOW QUANTITY INFERNO 3D/2D (1953) - LOW QUANTITY SOLD OUT JULIA (1977) - LOW QUANTITY MOSCOW ON THE HUDSON (1984) - LOW QUANTITY PEYTON PLACE (1957) - LOW QUANTITY SOLD OUT SENSE AND SENSIBILITY (1995) - LOW QUANTITY SOLD OUT THE BOSTON STRANGLER (1968) - LOW QUANTITY THE BRIDGE AT REMAGEN (1969) - LOW QUANTITY THE EMPEROR IN AUGUST (NIHON NO ICHIBAN NAGAI HI KETTEIBAN / 2015 - REGION A ONLY) - LOW QUANTITY THE HAPPY ENDING (1969) - LOW QUANTITY THE VALACHI PAPERS (1972) - LOW QUANTITY THEATRE OF BLOOD (1973) - LOW QUANTITY SOLD OUT TONY ROME / LADY IN CEMENT (1967 / 1968) - LOW QUANTITY ZELIG (1983) - LOW QUANTITY EYE OF THE NEEDLE (1981) - VERY LOW QUANTITY SOLD OUT COWBOY (1958) - VERY LOW QUANTITY SOLD OUT FLAMING STAR (1960) - VERY LOW QUANTITY SOLD OUT |

Ditto on this. For example, I came around to Leave Her to Heaven last year and fell in love with it--unfortunately, the TT disc was out of print and exorbitantly expensive. I was ecstatic when Criterion put out their new Blu-ray earlier this year, but we don't always have that saving grace. People find new films they're interested in or come to love all the time--I think this is true of anyone who collects them. There is definitely a panic-buy complex that occurs when we know something is going to be scarce (hence the toilet paper apocalypse this year), but I do think it's human nature to do this.
There's also prioritizing what you want to add to your library at a given time, and with that there are many variables: is it a die-hard favorite? Am I a casual fan? Want to own it but don't need it this second? Will it be available for the foreseeable future? Those are all things people consider. For example, I sat on getting the TT release of Peyton Place for a solid year or so because I had the DVD, which sufficed for the time being--instead, I focused on buying other films with my budget. When I read that TT was going under though, that changes the priority because I now know that in the near future I won't be able to get it for less than probably $50 or more once it's out of print. Of course I'm going to jump on it, be it the last minute or not. Just because people have had time to acquire some of these films doesn't mean there weren't valid reasons they didn't get them on the dot. Last edited by drownsoda; 05-23-2020 at 06:42 AM. |
