I've never seen this picture, but am actually looking forward to it more than the rest of the new releases. Anyone else order it?

Just got my shipping notice. PONY SOLDIER and the rest are on their way! Between those, my latest Olive order, the two new Woody Allens, and things like FEU MATHIAS PASCAL, THE DUELLISTS, WAKE IN FRIGHT, DECASIA, and some others, I've got a lot to catch up on!

A few 3-strip negatives escaped this fate at Fox, but not many. Can they still get impressive results from what survives? Perhaps....
Fox's Spanish DVD of Pony Soldier is pretty good quality - certainly better than their release of King of the Khyber Rifles, which isn't helped by the limitations of the early CinemaScope lenses - so this should look even better on Blu even if it doesn't have its original three-strip bite. And that Alex North score is one of his best and well worth the price of the disc on its own: the limited edition CD retails at $24.95, so you could almost regard it as getting the film as well for another five bucks.

That's how I look at it too Aclea.

Disappointing to hear that King of the Khyber Rifles is in such rough shape though...that was one I was really hoping TT would get to do. Herrmann's score is terrific, in various spots sounding like a precursor to his work on The 7the Voyage of Sinbad. Hopefully Fox has a good catalogue year and decides to do some work on it...

My problem with Twilight Time is not something they thought about, so I'm not attacking them for it but: at £25 each, they get slapped with at least £8 of customs fees, making me pay over £33 a time.

£33 is over $50.

With Criterion, I have more option to buy from sellers based in Europe who import them.

Have you ever actually ordered anything from SAE? You may find customs not being a problem.

After watching Laura last night I'm completely excited about Leave Her To Heaven. I believe it will be a wonderful presentation courtesy of Fox.

Just ordered:

Picnic
Swamp Water
Experiment in Terror
Désirée

That will make it 14 movies I've got from them, and yet all were worth it as blind buys.

Yes, I think this one will be impressive. It's an intelligent, but sometimes slow and episodic epic, if that makes sense. Fine performances. One of the most historically accurate history films made, even if it does take a few liberties from time to time. Fine score by Richard Bennett.

from wikipedia:

Nicholas and Alexandra is a 1971 biographical film which tells the story of the last Russian monarch, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, and his wife, Tsarina Alexandra. The film was adapted by James Goldman from the book by Robert K. Massie. It was directed by Franklin J. Schaffner. It won Academy Awards for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration (John Box, Ernest Archer, Jack Maxsted, Gil Parrondo, Vernon Dixon) and Best Costume Design, and was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Janet Suzman), Best Cinematography (Freddie Young), Best Music, Original Dramatic Score and Best Picture.

Massie's book Nicholas and Alexandra is a classic; one of the finest works of popular history ever written, in my opinion. The hardback has recently come back into print and is available on amazon and B&N (and, of course, there is the electronic version for those who prefer e-readers). Massie is an accomplished writer - every one of his books I have read are hard to put down because not only are the subjects interesting, but he brings historic characters to life and vividly descirbes the the era in which they live as integral to who they are and the choices they made. N&A is epic history and tragedy; I cannot wait to see the film adaptation for the first time.

Massie is a master at weaving history and biography together, particularly for the Romanov dynasty. He has also written books on Peter the Great and Catherine the Great, as well has his follow-up to N&A that updates the story with events and documents available after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Joshua Logan's Picnic is probably the most mainstream title of that lot Vw Driver, and yet plays better than any previous DVD version because of its full 2.55:1 'Scope transfer. Some aspects of it are timeless; others very much fixed in a mid-50s mindset. For me, more retro-admired than deeply adored, but this is by far the best presentation of it I've ever seen on VHS, Laserdisc, or DVD. So if you're new to this flick, you've definitely started at the top.

Swamp Water was my own personal best "blind buy" among those titles because despite being a big Jean Renoir fan, curiously, I'd never seen this picture, so I had no idea what to expect going in. I mean, Jean Renoir on location in a Southern U.S. swamp? WTF??? But its vintage B&W is gorgeous, and the performances uniformly fascinating, so I think you're in for a reel treat here. Among the oddest yet most treasured titles TT has released.

Experiment in Terror is just one of the classiest thrillers ever made. Period. I never get tired of this picture and tend to rewatch it in roughly 5 year cycles. They truly don't make 'em like this anymore. I did a little Snoopy dance when I heard TT was releasing it. The video is snappy throughout, and Mancini's iconic score has never sounded better.

Désirée could go either way though, especially on a blind buy. This is the movie Brando made to appease Fox after turning down The Egyptian, and it ends up being simultaneously right up his alley, and somewhere cross-town. It's really Jean Simmons' picture anyway, so if you're a fan of her work, I'm sure you'll be enthralled. AQ and PQ are straight up the middle...mostly pretty solid for early 'Scope...neither the best TT has released nor the worst. The opulent art direction and costuming are also a major lure here (and reason to wallow).

Thanks for all that input on those choices, and yes Desiree was my pick because of Jean Simmons, every movie I've seen her in is amazing.

@Killer Meteor

They have a nice little comments field on their order page. But enough room for a note regarding the value of outgoing orders

Default SAE ordering experience - very positive

Placed an order with SAE on Sunday night via their website. The package shipped on Monday and I received it on Wednesday. The blu-ray's were well packed: covered with bubble-wrap, in popcorn packing, and in a Priority Mail box so they arrived to me in perfect shape! I'd say buy with confidence!
