Frankly I'm so sick of over the top CGI set pieces in films. Just makes me roll my eye's. Seems like the scripts are centered around these pieces of fluff and suffer because of it. True movie magic is rare now..

I guess the other thing is that newer movies are already digital and there is next to no prep work for a blu ray release?

With having to do a restoration they are already spending more money on a product that will make less money.

They need to do restoration to protect films and not to generate money. Too bad a law can't be passed saying that all films need preservation. Even in this day and age a lot of classic films are at risk of loss and the fact that film stock may be dead soon poses an even greater threat.

I love classic movies and it goes deeper than the Wizard of Oz...movies like the Maltese Falcon, The Big Heat, the Big Sleep, The Roaring Twenties, A Double Life, Body & Soul where acting stood out far more than Ka-Boom !!
Even classic horrors like Dracula , Invisible Man, etc relied more on the actors ability in their parts rather than some huge explosion.
Todays generation gets stuck with a lot crummy remakes and piss-poor CGI movies that dont hold a candle to yesteryear. Do I like contemporary films ? Of course, who doesn't ? Sin City, Spiderman, Transformers, LA Confidential, The Hobbit, are all wonderful post year 2000 films in my opinion
Transformers is a precise example of what I hate about modern movies. I could write a whole page of posts ranting about modern films, but I will resist the temptation and save it for a more appropriate thread. Anyone know any threads for ranting about annoying things in modern films?

IMO, there's just as many good and bad movies today as there has always been. We just tend to forget about a lot of the bad movies from the past. Just look at the hundreds of titles in the Warner Archive from every decade that are mediocre at best (even if loved by specific people).

For example, when one thinks of 1954 many of us say "That was a great year for movies! On the Waterfront, Rear Window, Seven Samurai, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, White Christmas, Johnny Guitar!"

What you don't see is people saying "That was a weak year for movies. A Bullet Is Waiting, Charge of the Lancers, Captain Kid and the Slave Girl, Ma and Pa Kettle At Home, The Rocket Man."

People these days often refer to crap i.e. Transformers as being great. The types of films that people have come to remember have drastically changed since say 1954.

Then there is the notion that every black and white film is a...classic.

I suspect this, as much else, fits Sturgeon's revelation (aka 'Sturgeon's Law'): "90% of everything is crap".

. . . But, of course, the 10% that is worthwhile differs from person to person.

Well if it makes you feel better I really only enjoyed the first Transformers.
What I dont like in todays films is that tongue in cheek humor for characters that really dont have it (Sherlock Holmes, Tony Stark) and films with fast edits to the point where you cant tell WTF is going on
