Unfortunately, after 20 years of overly bright, over saturated home video transfers, people have gotten a skewed view of what is correct. Furthermore, either consciously or subconsciously, people tend to default to the previous DVD as somehow being "correct". If they've been watching an overly bright DVD for years they will see a proper BD presentation as "dark". If they've been watching a DVD with over-saturated, garish colors for years, they will say it is more "vibrant" than the Blu-ray. I like the Blu-ray of COVER GIRL and said so in this thread a long time ago. It could have been better. Make no mistake, this is not anything like one of those Warner Ultra-resolution restorations. People won't use the Cover Girl Blu-ray as reference material for old Technicolor. But it's head and shoulders over the DVD. Last edited by Dex Robinson; 06-10-2013 at 11:51 PM. Reason: Spelling |

Another thing that people forget with Cover Girl is that for years the film was only available in black and white because the Technicolor negative was in too poor condition to use, partially because of the film's popularity. I believe it wasn't until 1977 that there was a color restoration, which was based on surviving low-fade nitrate prints. The BD release is certainly a significant improvement on that and - from the section of a nitrate 35mm copy I saw screened some years ago - closer than the DVD to the original color.

Exhibit A:
![]() Exhibit B: ![]() Exhibit C: ![]() Exhibit D: ![]() Despite what some might have heard about this release, this was not a terribly distressed Technicolor transfer. And considering what Columbia was up against in trying to restore and remaster it without the original 3-strip negs, I thought it was actually a pretty amazing recovery job. Most 70 year old Technicolor films should be so lucky! I'm now up to 3 viewings of Cover Girl since last summer, and yes, it's true, there are some variances in picture 'snap' from scene to scene, with a little more grain and contrast than I'm accustomed to from a typical 40s-era studio IB print, and of course, opticals being opticals, you always takes yer chances there, even in Technicolor. On balance though, I thought this was not only a fun, tuneful, cleverly staged movie, but also an overall snazzy looker (in particular, watch Eve Arden in her losing battle with the Costume Dept. to not steal every scene she's in). So no showstopping regrets about this Blu-ray. Still baffles me why it's received such a hoo-hah rap. |
