Dude - I just got major props from my female facebook friends for posting this.

There's also a point where it's seems he choose shots that do a bit of lip synching... check the 1:00 to 1:20 mark. Whoever cut his clearly had a ball.

And I'll add that TT is on its way up and won't be going away anytime soon.

So Fox took a page out of TT playbook. Nice to see some more titles hitting the street!

Even better, saw this posted on SAE "There will be two new titles each month all with extras and commentary!"

Fox obviously wants the higher price also, and must be impressed with TT's success so far.
SAE about to be an even more important destination for classic bds on blu-ray.
(OUCH says my wallet)
All of the above.

Interestingly, both of these titles were part of Fox's numbered Studio Classics series. So if this is how they intend to handle all those mid-rung titles (good masters and features available, plus some previous success on DVD), then we could soon be seeing announcements for the following from Fox via SAE:
  • Gentlemen's Agreement
  • The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
  • The 3 Faces of Eve
  • The Song of Bernadette
  • The Rains Came
  • Anastasia
  • How to Steal a Million
  • The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
  • The Keys of the Kingdom
  • My Darling Clementine
  • Orchestra Wives
  • The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit
  • Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte
  • How Green Was My Valley
  • Anna and the King of Siam
  • The Razor's Edge
  • Leave Her to Heaven
  • The Ox-Bow Incident
  • The Snake Pit
  • Laura
  • Sunrise
  • A Letter to Three Wives
  • Peyton Place
    + some others I'm sure I've forgotten

I wouldn't be surprised if Fox releases their Cinema Classics and Film Noir series this way too.

The only wildcard here is how many of those Fox titles have already been licensed to Twilight Time for limited runs over the next 3 years. Probably not many, but Demetrius and the Gladiators and Journey to the Center of the Earth proved that TT got a their mitts on some awfully good'uns. In particular, I'm hoping TT gets to do The Ghost and Mrs. Muir instead of Fox, because of the rare opportunity it presents for an isolated Bernard Herrmann score.

I suppose we could probably make a parlour game out of which titles will stay with Fox and which will go to TT. But this is certainly an interesting development, which as others have noted, is a sign that TT's success with their direct-to-collector catalogue model has already had an effect.

Some great titles on that list. Do you know if The Razor's Edge version you listed is the mostly forgotten but excellent 1980s film starring Bill Murray? I am unaware of any other version, but I could just be unaware of an earlier original. If it is the Murray film, I really want that one.

I saw it on VHS a long time ago and loved it. It was Murray's attempt to break out into serious drama; he put everything he had into the role, and when the movie flopped, he took a long hiatus - I think it was a couple of years - from acting. Apparently, back then the movie going public did not want to see Murray in anything except comedies.

I was referring to the 1946 version of The Razor's Edge starring Tyrone Power and Gene Tierney. Fox released this title under their Studio Classics banner about 10 years ago.

But the Murray remake was a Columbia/TriStar title, and we know how keen they are about their catalogue these days. So in a somewhat perverse twist, we could actually see both versions of that title released on Blu-ray over the next year or so...the original as one of these Fox exclusives, and the remake as a limited TT run.

Depends on your focus. If commentaries and upscaled SD features are your bag, then those who measure Blu-rays 'by the pound' will be more attracted to the Fox series. If the studio is just using SAE as a better way of targeting their Studio Classics, Cinema Classics, and Film Noir titles to the fans who most want them, then we should be seeing some wonderful titles announced over the coming months.

However, for many of us, the appeal of TT isn't just getting a particular catalogue title onto Blu-ray, but all the attention they pay to other collector details such as lossless audio and isolated scores, and going to 50GB discs, rather than cramming the movie plus a bunch of legacy ported DVD features into a 25GB disc. They've taken the high road on presentation of the content itself, which is something of considerable value to collectors who realize that this might be the only Blu-ray release they ever see of some of these titles.

To be sure, Fox is filling a gap here. I suspect their SAE offerings will be a lot of mid-level classics with varying sales history on DVD, which will at least finally be getting out there on Blu-ray to the fans who really want them. Some of the faster sellouts will eventually cross-over to the home label retail, but for others, this will be it. In a weird way, this move frees up TT to concentrate on the more obscure 'lost-in-the-vault' titles that Fox never did on DVD, and have no interest in taking to Blu anyway (like Desirée, The Wayward Bus, Swamp Water, Rapture, and The Roots of Heaven). It's also acknowledging the merit in TT's business approach and the value of SAE's pre-targeted collector distribution model.

In the long run, I suspect it will be better for fans and collectors of catalogue movies, both large and small.

Hi all, please try to keep this thread related to Twilight Time's releases and not the 20th Century Fox titles we are now distributing. Someone can probably create a new thread if they wish?

Next Twilight Time releases Bell, Book and Candle and Desiree will be available for pre-order 3/16 at 4pm EST.

Initially some of this discussion is natural due to the overlap in TT and Fox distribution models at the entry point for the latter. It will settle down of its own accord Chris, but I agree, the Fox/SAE thing should have it's own board.

See I don't understand how Fox releases are any different or "less loving" than TT. TT doesn't touch the transfers or the extras and outside of isolated scores there is nothing unique about their releases. Lossless audio is pretty standard in 2012 and TT's packages and authoring isn't exactly sumptuous.

The best thing I can say about TT is that they don't get in the way of their own releases. They are straightforward and priced to a specific market. Love doesn't have anything to do with it.

I disagree. I like all the nice touches on TT releases. For example the tastefully stylish covers, the 8 page booklets that come with the movies, the fact that the movie is presented in the best possible way without being molested with DNR or EE, or crammed onto a disc full of extras. Frankly I'm not fussed about any extras - the movies are the main game for me. And unlike some studio releases, that seems to be what TT focuses on too. That's not to say that all studio releases are bad of course, just that TT releases seem to be consistently good.

The booklets, and fact they use non cheap-o cases are good decisions by Twilight Time. There's really nothing special about them, but at least they aren't eco cases with generic discs/lacking artwork.

I don't think the DNR or EE has anything to do with them. I wouldn't expect they even have resources to apply that kind of processing even if they wanted too. I'm happy with the transfers of the titles I have seen, though I wonder what would happen if there was a title they wanted to release, but the existing master was not in "blu-ray" standard. Hopefully there are plenty of options where they wont' have to worry about that for a good, long while.

Whoa there fella, don't be jumping the gun on the defensive side. I should have been more clear but the part of the statement, that I quoted, that got my eye was that Fox would be releasing two titles per month. I didn't mean to imply focus on the extras and/or commentaries as those are a bonus. But since you mentioned it, we don't know what type of quality Fox will be putting out on these discs. The extras could be standard defintition but I'm sure the transfers of the feature film will be the same quality as the TT releases given Fox currently has provided that material to TT for their releases. No reason to believe why they wouldn't do the same for their own releases.

The studios have direct control over that bolded part above as it has nothing to do with TT. That's not meant to be a negative on TT but the studio is the one that provided the transfers to TT. Therefore for that specific part you should be applauding the studio.

wide date for the 2 Fox exclusives is 6/5/12.
hardly a long wait, and kind of ridiculous imo.
what's the point of pre-ordering again?
oh wait--the magnet--I forgot.

I realize that, but sometimes for studio releases the studio decides to "spruce up" a master with DNR or EE whereas TT cannot and would not do this. I'm not suggesting that TT has the ability to alter the master, but that is actually a positive factor in their favor.
