This is another great reason for all of you to pre-order Man in the Dark.

...after I have placed my own pre-order, of course.

I'll be pre-ordering this for definite. All of the films starring Edmond O'Brien I've seen so far have been really entertaining! Looking forward to seeing what artwork TT have lined up.

Tom Laughlin of Billy Jack fame also died a few days ago (Dec 12 IIRC). He was also in South Pacific.

Still not worth the fuss of ordering through SAE.
First reports of what?

You get the companies mixed up. You had no idea they began offering refunds once the complaints rolled in. In short, you don't know what you're talking about.

Go read a bit from when it happened and you'll see a few personal attacks that didn't get deleted, survivors of what was a flood of personal attacks on the TT owners, which contributed in no small part to their wanting nothing to do with the people on this site by and large. Having seen most of them at the time I frankly can't blame them.

I know enough of SAEs crap who they mainly deal which isn't worth it. On top of things its a lot easier to just ignore idiots like that.
And why WOULD I have heard of the refunds? You know how old and long that thread is?
Crap disappears every day among all these threads especially when people stop posting in them. The last I saw was them telling people to be happy with the fact they had a collectors edition if the film and that's what I went off. If they offered refunds good for them, they're less dicks in that situation.
Their editions still aren't worth their prices or putting up with the customer service problems of SAE.

Ivd been satisfied with every purchase I've made with them, and it's over 10. Removed from their perspective you think its easy to ignore the whiners when in fact in context of their business it was people feeling entitled to something on the cheap or they ***** and moan ignorant of the facts and hurt their sales which is the same as messing with their livelihoods.

And a salient fact is this: they're basciLly releasing films that otherwise wouldn't be seeing the light of day on this format. So yeah you should be happy we're getting it at all.

You see I actually don't completely have a huge problem with their model or think they're a terrible company I have Leave Her to Heaven and am happy with it and I've paid twice as much for dvd editions in the past before I had the ability to shop the internet.
Before the canadian dollar went up retail prices for a Criterion dvd was between 50-70 dollars in store. Thing is is that they usually put a good amount of extras on their releases to make me pay them. I know TT usually is told by other studios that they can't produce features which is really stupid. I also like that they're starting to produce more on some of them but most titles I've never seen and the ones i have can't seem to justify paying 35 for a bare bones release. Its also understandable if people have the previous editions on dvd with the exact same features.
When it all comes down to it I will buy something from them if I don't think there will be a better release anywhere else anytime soon but not otherwise.
For now all I can hope is that the studios will cut their crap and SAE lightens up with their attitudes towards customer complaints but until then I won't be shopping from them unless its a desperate situation.

I bought 6 of their movies, had no trouble with their business model and made no complaints about them on this forum, then I heard how they reacted to criticisem and chose to hurt everyone on this web site. I also have heard an interview of one of the owners talking about a reviewer who had criticized their business model, ( not one on this web site ). The Owner really tore into the man in a most unprofessional manner.

JK is an example of how a professional or business should react to different opinions. He has continued to review TT's movies at his own expence. And I might say has been very fair in his evaluations. My recent experience with Eureka MoC has shown me how a good business responds to a complaint. I was accidently mailed the wrong movie so I emailed them The next day I received their reply apologizing, telling me to keep the wrong movie a sending me the right one that same day. This is a company that will keep my business, not TT.

The only complaint I have about your post is this often stated, but impossible to prove that "these movies would never be released if it were not for TT."
I don't think this is true. They might not be released as soon, but many would eventuclly be released. All the above is in my humble opinion.

This reminds me of a line in the play Litl Abner. When Congress decides to test the nuclear bomb by blowing up Dogpatch. Somthing like "Congress thinks so little of Dogpatch that they want to blow it off the face of the Earth. So show your appreciation !

Jeff is a great guy and a complete professional. How exactly is it his fault that some people did not appreciate some of my comments here? As it happens I actually own over twenty of their releases. I have been critical at times and positive at others. I think TT messed up big time with NOTLD because they were not familiar with the movie. However, the label has released gems like The Big Heat, Mysterious Island, Demetrius and the Gladiators, Journey to the Center of the Earth and others (not Mindwarp ).

At the end of the day we are movie lovers and we buy the movies we love...that is what it is all about. Personally, I am a volunteer mod and my opinion is that of a customer and a movie fan. I don't have the inclination to kiss up to anyone or to censor my personal opinion. BTW, the people who run and manage this site are some of the nicest people anyone could hope to know and the same goes for the reviewers .

That being said I leave this thread to you gents...

I watched Bonjour Tristesse tonight, and I really liked it. One of my top 3 TT's so far (along with Experiment in Terror and Rapture.)

The idea that if TT didn't release it, no-one would is so incredibly rediculous. They have a very very small amount of titles that no other company would bother with and while it's great that they're available, they're not exactly what people would call 'important films'.

But you're telling me no other company would have touched: As Good As it Gets, Sleepless in Seattle, Oliver, The Way We Were etc... even titles like Leave Her to Heaven would have been released by someone like Criterion eventually.

Would another company have released these? Maybe yes, maybe no. Who knows? How long will blu-ray be around?

The most telling thing though is that Sony has decided films like Oliver (6 Oscars including Best Picture), As Good As It Gets (Oscars for Best Actor & Actress), The Way We Were (Two Oscars, #5 at the Box Office in 1973, starring Barbra Streisand whose fan base is pretty rabid), aren't even worth their own time and effort to release, instead choosing to licence it to a company for three years in a limited number. Bear in mind that Sony was one of the companies that originally developed the format.

But this is really just beating a dead horse, it's getting pretty tiresome going over this stuff about TT ad infinitum. I was half-joking in one of my previous posts, but I really wish the TT forum could be split up so that there could be a dedicated forum for TT critics and fanboys to duke it out, and another one for general discussion (and yes I know it's my own damn fault for clicking here and getting sucked in anyway!)

Well the truth is the newer releases would get it but TT needs them to keep the lights on. The majority of their stuff takes a year or more to sell out so they need a Christine. It's a shame they have to do that.

Oh trust me, i'm definitely in the fanboy category. I might be insane but I do buy every single release. I live in Australia where Sony released alot of these themselves and are available for less than $10, but I still buy the TT release instead. Why? Because I like the company and want to show support so they stick around. Yes, I probably am crazy.

I'm not a whinger and not a complainer which is why I rarely post in threads but this last couple of months dealing with TT and SAE has put me in a bit of a sour mood and while I do support them wholeheartedly, I think it's more than fair to give them criticism for the things they don't get right (customer service, communication).

If you think it's unhealthy to give constructive criticism, then you're beyond help :P
