Right now I'm still waiting for my "Fright night" bd to arrive (I live overseas). Maybe it's just a Xmas heavy mail traffic thing, but I'm fearing the worst, even more now that I've learned it's out of stock. Well, I didn't pay registered shipping to secure a second unit anyway.... I won't pre-order Picnic until I see what happens now, maybe I have to start using the registered shipping option.
I guess you've read Nick Redman's interview at HomeTheaterForum. They have only locked in 8 Sony titles, starting with "Mysterious island" (well, it'll take them 8 months to release them all anyway), and adding to ones I already own or pre-ordered, I'll be getting "Bell, book and candle" (probably) and "The big heat", but not the other two, I'm sorry to say. The Fox deal seems to be more interesting, or at least more exotic, unpredictable, surprising. They got the rights to 100 movies that have never been released on dvd before (although many of them don't have blu-ray ready masters). Considering their releasing rate, one wonders why did they bother with so many movies? Well, the possibilities are intriguing, anyway. And now they have the new Fox deal (for more famous movies, that have already been released on dvd), and "Demetrius and the gladiators" seems to be the first one we'll get. That's great too. Has anyone from the UK ordered from Twilight Time? I was away to order Rapture and it advised me to choose Registered or Express delivery due to things going missing etc. and that they wouldn't replace lost items. Is it really necessary? I'm probably just being grippy but I'm not fond of paying high prices for postage...

I'm in Australia. I just paid the registered shipping. On the off chance it did go missing, that would have been a lot of money down the drain (since I ordered 3 titles).
But this could get very very expensive for us outside of the US. My plan was to just order all four titles every two months to save on shipping, but that won't work if some start to sell out like Fright Night did. Is there a way you can get a warning that their stocks are running low? Do they update their facebook page with that kind of information? Wouldn't want to miss out on any. |

From an interview with the head of Twilight Time posted a week or two ago, it seems The Egyptian has sold about 2000 (so ~1000 left) and Mysterious Island was described as also "selling well" (so I guess not quite up to 2000 yet), so it may be a while before another such heads-up is posted - but they've made it clear on their Facebook page that they'll be giving those heads-up when numbers get that low. |

Fright Night was TT's hottest seller to date, and even that title took 5 full weeks from pre-order date to completely sell out. Mysterious Island will probably be next, yet has been available since early November, with The Egyptian going all the way back to mid-July. Most of these titles are very collector focused and will be available for several months before the last BDs go. A really obscure title like Rapture could take a year or more.* If you're doing pre-orders though, you can always select the option that instructs SAE to hold onto all items until the order is complete. This will lock you in for all titles until all can be shipped, which in your scenario would mean not ordering the current month releases until the following month titles go up for pre-order. Except for the occasional culty, cross-demographic *wild card* like Fright Night you should not be at risk of missing out on any of these fine TT BDs. Although the bi-monthly wait in between batches might leave you rather antsy. * No reflection on its quality; Rapture is a fine addition to any film fan's collection. Gotta love those TT Blu-ray covers! They capture the essence of the original period art while simplifying it so that it's not just a busy 1-sheet dump. Even without their logo, I could identify a TT edition at a glance. No modern graphic 'posturing' either, just a clean, classy representation of what you're actually buying. Curious to see what they do with Demetrius and the Gladiators...it's had pretty cheesy cover artwork so far on home video. |

EDIT: I just saw the original poster art in another thread. The cross+skull image is taken from there, but it's a very different rendering, the style is altogether from another era. Well, I guesss it's updated, as you say. The other one does look like it's vaguely following the graphic design styles of its day, like it could be a riff of the original poster. I don't like it though. BTW, I wish TT would release more deep catalog titles of the '30s and '40s like "Swamp water". I would buy all of those, unlike movies of the '50s (I'm not getting half of them). I guess it's just me though. Which reminds me, and I'm warning readers this is an off-topic note, that Olive Films have chosen to release "No man of her own"(1950), a little-seen, noirish, pretty good Barbara Stanwyck movie, on DVD-only. And they're releasing on blu-ray a bunch of uninteresting (for me) movies of the '60s the very same day (March 27th). Oh well. Last edited by jaaguir; 01-16-2012 at 03:58 PM. |

https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=8029 But here they don't mention the dvd releases, so people couldn't see the injustice. With your link they can. Apparently Olive Films think that academy ratio B&W movies don't deserve blu-ray treatment. I see no other explanation. Because I can't believe that sales expectations for forgotten sinatra movies of the '60s could be much higher than those for a Stanwyck norish movie, considering tastes of old movie fans. To keep this post on-topic, I'll say that I just bought the "Picnic" blu-ray, and will soon pre-order "Swamp water". And "Pal Joey" is their top-selling blu-ray at this moment, according to the Top10 chart to the right (SAE site). Last edited by jaaguir; 01-18-2012 at 03:08 PM. |

Not really. I share that interest, especially vis-à-vis Noir titles. Black and White looks so rich and expressive when properly remastered in high def. Last edited by ROclockCK; 01-18-2012 at 09:08 PM. |
